Show me your favorite Original Sketch Covers

Postby mattestarr » Fri Jun 09, 2017 12:44 pm

I have bought and commissioned a lot of original sketch covers. A truly direct way to support the Comic Book Arts.

I will post a few of my favorites. Let's see yours!

This amazing connected sketch by Ken Haeser (after Kirby) all signed by Stan Lee:

This awesome delivery by Chad Knopf. I asked to see Thanos and Galactus Thumb Wrestling - he had the foresight to put it on a Contest of Champions blank. Now I am working on a series of Contest of Champions now with various artists. I love this sketch cover:

This is the first one I bought - was blown away by Chad Knopf's background detail:

This awesome piece by Jennifer Allyn got me championing her work:

Sometimes humor wins. Andy Gray is the artist. Love the pubes:

Again a great swipe/homage by Matt Skillman (after Moore):

And sometimes you gotta get a little heated. Luis Bravo delivers this Unbelievable Gwenpool:

Awesome sketches! I don't have many but here's my favorite. It's by Carlos Cabaleiro. I was lucky to win it because I hate waiting in lines and have only recently starting to go to cons (Houston isn't the best place for it IMO)Image

I have a new "Sketch" project using all black covers. I have friends that do the sketch book thing where they have a theme and fill up the whole sketch book with art. After finding one of the Midnight Massacre covers I thought it would be cool to have artists sketch on them and use some new metallic pens I found (Bic Markits Metallic). Colored pencils and paint pens can work too. I now have a big list of books that are all black or have giant swatches of all black. Here are three I had done had these done by Andy Carreon and the shroom one is from a local Az artist named Adam Yeater.

Here are the pens that work really well on both glossy black covers (ie. ASM #36) and flat/matte black covers (ie. Midnight Massacre). I can't remember all the books I have stockpiled, but there is a bunch of them. Here are some I do remember...

- Amazing Spider-Man #36 WTC tribute
- Deathblow #1
- Solar #10
- 5 different titles from Marvels Midnight Massacre event (Ghost Rider #40, Nightstalker #10, Morbius #12, Darkhold #11, & Blaze #13)
- 8 different titles from Marvel's Siege of Darkness event (Ghost Rider #44, Nightstalker #14, Morbius #16, Darkhold #15, Ghostrider/Blaze #17, Dr. Strange #60, Marvel Comic Presents #143 & #144)
- 7 different titles from Malibu's Infinity event (Mantra, All-New Exiles, Prime, Nightman, Syrin, & Rune)
- Cage Vol.2 #18
- Superboy Vol.4 #14

If any of you CBSI artists read this, let me know and I'll send you a few blanks I have. I am sure most have been sketching on the black covers for years so maybe using the Luke Cage and Superboy issues below could act as some sort of challenge as the sketch could become part of the action happening on the cover...
