3 Spider-Man Unlimited #1

WRITER: Tom DeFalco
ARTIST: Ron Lim
Dollar bin fodder prior to this week as there are truckloads of copies out there.  Sony news stating that Shriek will be in Venom 2, and prices have jumped to $10-15.  Once the flood settles, we can then evaluate what this book is likely worth.

4 Cobra Kai #1 Kagan McLeod 1:25 Variant

WRITER: Denton J. Tipton
ARTIST: Kagan McLeod
You would have been aware of this one before it hit $90 if you were following our Indie Spotlight writer Andy Tomberlin.  This is another case of ‘there can’t be many of these out there’ and a pretty cool cover.

5 Marked #1 1:Store Variant

WRITER: David Hine & Brian Haberlin
ARTIST: Brian Haberlin & Geirrod Van Dyke
Secret variants get hot initially because of the surprise factor.  This one, coupled with the Halloween theme, has been a hit at around $40-50.  Check out those skull tattoos!

6 Bone #1

WRITER: Jeff Smith
ARTIST: Jeff Smith
This is a very hard book to evaluate as there just aren’t that many copies out there and even fewer in high grade (only 57 on the CGC census at 9.6 or higher).  That being said, an 8.0 copy did sell this week for a record high of $927 and a raw (probably Fine copy) sold for $1000 after news broke that this will be made into a Netflix show.

7 Amazing Fantasy #10

8 Black Adam #1 Alex Ross 1:10 Variant

WRITER: Peter J. Tomasi
ARTIST: Doug Mahnke
This was about a $25 book with 9.8’s selling around $150-175.  The Rock tweets that filming begins next year and all of a sudden, raw copies skyrocket to $100+.  Have we mentioned here how amazing Alex Ross is??

9 Gargoyles #1

WRITER: Martin Pasko
ARTIST: Amanda Conner
Not an overly abundant book, even though it is from 1994, this was basically a $5 or less book.  Now it’s $15-20 with a 9.8 having sold for $135. This just stemming from news that Disney+ will show all the old episodes (which does seem to have a large cult following).

10 Venom (2019) #18 2nd Print 1:25 Variant

WRITER: Donny Cates
ARTIST: Iban Coello
Yes, I know that a lot of you hate these.  Yes, it looks like a Marvel cash grab. Yes, it’s a bizarre looking cover.  But, yes, it is a $40-50 book with only a few available on eBay at the moment.

1991 Great Salt Lake Comic Convention

WRITER: Various
ARTIST: Various
Thanks to Jon Z for bringing this to my attention.  Coming out 2 years before SDCC, this 1st(?) depiction of Hellboy is apparently impossible to find.  I was not even aware of this book, which is why it made the list this week, but a copy sold this week for $5000 (with a cover tear no less).  If you are in the SLC area, check the flea markets for this one.

Hangman Comics #3

WRITER: Various
ARTIST: Harry Lucey (cover)
This book has it all on the cover: Nazi’s, aliens, axes, lingerie, bondage.  Very little sales info on this (a 4.0 in 2017 for $2600) but a 6.5 copy sold this week for $8100!

Question: With Bone #1 (as well as other subsequent issues) having at least 8 printings by Cartoon Books, is there any differentiation other than the 1st Printing being the most valued and sought after to the 2nd being second best, but the Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, etc. all seem to be lumped into the same valuation.

I’m not sure if there’s any published print runs that makes one printing more scare than another.

      Thanks!

At this point is it worth it to buy overprinted #1 issues that aren’t worth much and wait 1-3 years before they cycle into becoming a $20-25 book?

I would love for Netflix to do a Strangers in Paradise series. That first printing of #1 was about 3,000 copies. Not many come to market. Imagine how high a 9.8 might go for? I don’t have a copy in such high grade, but I do have one signed by Terry Moore. Anyway, go 90s Indy comics!

    Great list Ben!!

That SLC book is crazy, I wonder what, if anything happens to dime press’s value.

And man oh man, that Hangman…

When it comes to Spider-man Unlimited 1. Searching for high grade newsstand copies only. That Hangman cover is purely awesome. It’s stacked with different collectible elements. Dang! Wish I would have known about that SLC convention book when I visited there 3 years ago.

I thought for a moment we were done with the second print variants, insert eye roll, and it’s a sketch variant too, insert second eye roll. I still don’t understand why the sketch variants are higher ratio. If it’s the same ratio, how many people truly want the sketch over the colored, seriously.

I remember Monstress#1 1st print blew up early on its life cycle. Like It maxed out at $50 a pop. Each book is an art piece. This book and Saga deserve to be more than just optioned to TV or film. WithIn the right hands I see those two books Becoming more successful than The Umbrella Academy.

Monstress is still a rumor. Nevertheless this is our industry nowadays…

I want monstress to get made but i was always worried how they could do it justice.

I know what you mean, Sana Takeda’s style in so much a part of Monstress that it would be hard to bring that across in any live-action adaptation. I think an animated movie or series would be perfect.

  • Dan Piercy

Now that we know the Monstress news is not true, will the prices fall back down? Probably only a little. 1st print in 9.8 was a $150 book for YEARS before this week. C’est la vie…

That Hellboy prototype is a lot more of a prototype than Dime Press is. Interesting book though. ‘First depiction of Hellboy’ is a confusing way to describe it IMO. I don’t have either one, so no skin in the game. Prototypes aren’t that interesting to me, but they are to some. Also, a pamphlet isn’t exactly a comic… Is it?
