1 Marvel Celebrates Stan Lee #NN

WRITER: Various
ARTIST: Various
Well, either Marvel is bluffing with their ‘sell this book and be fired’ statement, or some people think that $400-500 is more than their job is worth.  Either way, it is difficult to tell exactly how many of these are floating around and whether that price is where it should be.

The ‘A’ cover is selling well too, around $15 but this one has jumped back up from around $50 to the $80 mark again. A 9.9 sold for $335, is that a good price or not–do 9.9’s deserve that kind of price jump?

Mister Mystery #13

WRITER: Various
ARTIST: Bernard Baily (cover)
A 5.5 sold last month for $1900 and a CBCS 4.0 sold this week for $1400.  Keep in mind that a 4.5 sold just a couple years ago for $475. I think before going and killing someone, a manicure should be considered though…

Awesome list!!! That Marvel-Boy is interesting. Those early 2000s first apps are starting to get noticed!

I found that Marvel Boy for $2 the other day, guess I can retire now.

I feel like the Joker book is hot flavor for the moment. The movie that was released I think has a lot to do with this making the top of the list. Do you think Joker books and covers will continue to be hot once the hype from the movie moves on? Keep up all the awesome work guys!

    • Juno Beach

Yes, and various other sites are giving wrong info on the scarcity. It’s a one-per-store variant UNLESS you signed an affidavit saying you destroyed your store’s copies of the recently recalled Superman and Supergirl’s. Then you get the equivalent amount of the Joker cover.

TL,DR: There’s probably a ton of these out there.

    • Avatar

It could end up being a highly sought-after classic Joker cover in the years to come.

Is there a ton of these out there? No, not in comparison to Tec 880 which still carries its weight to this day.
Once these find their way into the hands of true collector’s the market will dry up and the demand will follow. It’s a great Bolland cover.

Glad to see that Jon Kent is getting some attention . Great character as a foil to Damian. So there’s a B variant to Convergence: Superman #2… will that be worth more or less than the standard cover?

  • Avatar

There is also a hard to find and harder to find in NM condition DF variant of Marvel Boy #1 by Granov.

That Spawn 249 has been a hot comic for years.

I have sold roughly 10 copies from 50$ to 90$ over the last 3 years.

As for convergence #2… Wonder if Superman Lois and Clark #1 and 8 will see an uptick?

    • Topher

I believe the DF variant has 2 different signed and certified editions, with one having a more limited number.

Just to give people who might be buying the Bats book a heads up, 381 is a cameo first, 382 is a first full. he does not become a ghost until 385.

Thanks for another great list Ben.

“Remember when this was a $50 book that nobody wanted?”

No, because people always want gorgeous Hughes covers.

  • Avatar

I was told a lot of the supergirl and Superman books were stopped at the distributor level. Meaning a lot of stores didn’t get any copies of the Bolland Joker variant. From my understanding Houston didn’t get any copies. The only place I found one was at second and Charles 45 minutes outside of Houston. They are a chain so I can understand them receiving copies. BUT they only received one copy.

are still in stock at Diamond. Get’em fast.

I’m steadily getting out of the hobby after 35 years due to the variant/multiple cover madness (which is no reflection of what you guys do, news is news and CBSI reports it well), but I will say seeing these Spawn issues appreciating is nice. I know no one is actually reading them, but to me that series still represents a bit of purity in a now “rat race” of an industry.

    • Ben Steiniger

I hate to hear that. The variant race is exhausting. Same thing happened to sports cards in the early 90’s with inserts and then the manufacturers got smart. Serial numbering on the card and on card autographs. Once the comic producers actually implement these innovations full blown, you might have a change of heart…hopefully these changes will happen sooner rather than later.

  • Batman

The Bitter Root Akira variant is beautiful. I picked it up when it came out because of that. I have no real attachment to the story but can’t sell even at $80 cause it’s just that cool! Is that normal? I’m not good at this spec game! I buy but then can’t let go! Haha
