HOT 10 COMICS

1 Tank Girl #1

WRITER: Alan Martin
ARTIST: Jamie Hewlett
This could just as easily been Deadline #1, but went with this classic cover due to the sheer volume of sales this week following a Margot Robbie led Tank Girl movie.  Raws are well over $100 and a 9.6 jumped from $200 to almost $400 and a 9.8 sold for $800, more than #200 higher than the previous all time high.

2 Deadline #1

WRITER: Various
ARTIST: Various
See #1…  These are basically the 2 ‘key’ Tank Girl books to have.

3 Black Panther (Vol. 7)#2 2nd Print

WRITER: Ta-Nehisi Coates
ARTIST: Daniel Acuna
Similar to the First Host #3, this one has jumped from cover all the way up to $30-40 in just a short time.  I’m not familiar with the storyline, but it is being hailed as the 1st appearance of Killmonger Symbiote.

4 Super Dinosaur #1

WRITER: Robert Kirkman
ARTIST: Jason Howard
Every cheap copy is gone and sales have jumped from cover to over $10 on the news that there will be an Amazon show. Super late entry on the list as this news just came out today.

Check Availability

5 Deadworld #10

WRITER: Jack Herman & Vince Locke
ARTIST: Vince Locke
Full page back cover of The Crow.  It is difficult to find high grade copies of this but several have sold this week in the $60-80 range.

6 Young Avengers #1

WRITER: Allan Heinberg
ARTIST: Jim Cheung
The roller coaster ride is still happening for this book and it is back going up the hill with Kate Bishop casting of Hailee Steinfeld.  Prices on 9.8’s and 9.6’s are fairly stable but raw copies seem to be in the $70-80 range which is about double what is was last week.

7 Undiscovered Country #1 Ashcan

WRITER: Scott Snyder
ARTIST: Charles Soule
So about a month ago, this was a $40-50 book, then 2 weeks ago, it dropped to around $25.  This week, it shot back up again to $40-60 with several sales in the past 2 days.

8 House of X #4 Jorge Molina Variant

WRITER: Jonathan Hickman
ARTIST: Pepe Larraz
I’m still super confused by these connecting variants spiking in price.  Anyway, this one is getting $15-20

Check Availability

9 Harbinger #1

WRITER: Jim Shooter
ARTIST: David Lapham
News that Paramount picked this up from Sony caused 9.8’s to move back toward the $1000 mark, where they had been selling in the $750 range.  I’m not sure that this is even news to get involved in, we still haven’t even had confirmation of the in-production Bloodshot movie…

10 Batman #1

WRITER: Bill Finger
ARTIST: Bob Kane & Jerry Robinson
A CBCS 7.5 sold this week for a staggering $250k.  I doubt it is specifically tied to the Joker movie, but I guess maybe it could be.  As I've said in the past, when books like this are doing well, it shows that the hobby overall is healthy.

Check Availability

Venom (Vol. 4)  #18 1:25 Codex Variant

WRITER: Donny Cates
ARTIST: Iban Coello
This was expected to be a mover this week, and it is…but only for slightly above ratio at around $30.

Popular Teen-Agers #15

WRITER: Jay Disbrow
ARTIST: LB Cole (Cover)
Another GA entry with an LB Cole cover.  There definitely appears to be interest in some of these romance books–with the right cover artist–and this one is no different.  A 5.0 sold this week for $750–10x raw price that lists for $75

Just need to make a small correction: Black Panther should be Vol 8. Keep up the great work.

Great write up! Two comments. Valiant is f**cked. Again. Their new parent company DMG is garbage, and the CEO Dan Mintz doesn’t give a shit about the IPs other than auctioning them off. If you use IG check out Dinesh’s comment on my question on his newest post. He knows.

Also, I’d say a book like Batman #1 is always going to do well. Right? It’s pretty much literally a treasure. So how does that translate into the market as a whole being healthy? Personally, I’d look for much lower tier books, yet still important ones, doing well as a more poignant sign of a healthy market as a whole.

    Thanks again, Ben!

Great list as always Ben!!! Always love this.

My most recent article was deleted it appears, 32 comments, with reply’s on each one. More than half supporting the thought. ..I’m not sure what’s up!!!

    Great stuff nonetheless.

I concur… AJ’s article was spot on, and he responded to every comment! What gives?

Must be that “comics politics” I keep hearing about. I hope your article gets reinstated, sir!

Not sure I understand. Some really wonderful people that are apart of this site, but come on! I engage with all of my readers, right, wrong, or indifferent! I’m better than nobody! I just like to give a well thought argument, and I welcome differing opinions! We were closing in on 35 different responses, and I replied to each one!!!

Ninesquareinches, thanks for recognizing man! I appreciate it!

      • A. J. Diesel

Not to mention hours of research and work put into the articles! Unscripted and raw! More than half of the comments agreed with me, and I wasn’t rude to anyone! Love this site, and the people, but can’t understand why my work has been deleted! But other articles that are legitimately offensive can stay on!!!

Regardless, I still rep and support CBSI. Just very confused.

I really dig CBSI too, which is why I keep coming back. Your article was the first one I could really get behind. If they don’t reinstate it, can you post it to the CBSI Facebook page to get more exposure?

You’re articles are among the few worth reading AJ. Along with Usual suspects, covering the spread, hot 10 and Wednesday one!

I thought that was a great article you wrote. I am not sure why it was deleted. Keep up the great work!

Might make note if you can that the Deadline #1 is the original UK version. There was a US version of Deadline published by Dark Horse (I think) a couple years later featuring Tank Girl. Has a different cover but some people may confuse the two.

Funny how none of the Top 10 Comics from last week made this week’s list. Sigsns of a very fickle market. Hot one week, not the next.

  • Avatar

is there a link to a video for this top ten list?

Thought: Putting the release year with each Top 10 comic would be fantastic! please?

Fun list this week. Thanks for all the hard work.

That was my Tank Girl 1 9.8 sale. That was also my honorable mention recently with that crazy Millie the Model 1 sale. I’m on fire! Haha. Just wanted to comment as I’m going to expect to make this list from time to time from now on. I’ve been buying/selling for nearly 25 years now, so it’s nice to see this kind of stuff.

  • Ben C

    That LB cover is superb.

Watched 2 Batman 1s end recently for staggering prices as well. The difference in price between a 7.5 and an 8.0 is also staggering!

I take it as a sign of a strong market.

Damn, I was at a book fair earlier today and there was a bunch of Super Dinosaur books for a buck each that I just left there…!!

  • Avatar

At first I was like, “what the heck, $250k for a 7.5 Bats 1 is actually a bargain”. That’s not a blockbuster price at all, in fact, that is considered a disappointing result in most circles.

Then I saw it was a CBCS slab and that explained the basement dweller result. Why anybody still uses that company for anything, especially for a book of that magnitude, is a mystery to me. The seller probably $100k+ on the table. Yikes!

If you want a consistent and honest grade, go with cbcs. The number of spine ticks I’ve seen on 9.6 and higher books lately out of cgc is alarming. I’ve had to return cgc books I’ve purchased on eBay because of how lax they are with grading lately…something going on there…pushing a lot of non deserving grades through.

… but on the other side of the coin a lot of my books I thought were no better than 9.6s have come back 9.8 from cgc!! Cha Ching!

So I agree best sale price is cgc…. and alternatively best bargain price is cbcs.

    • Father_fanboy

The only thing I use them for anymore is signature verification, since CGC is incapable of doing that for some reason…I hated to do it, but there’s literally no other option. Although it is weird to me that they’re discounted when CGC definitely (as the other commenter notes) has some shady things going on as well.

      • Avatar

CBCS has no business “authenticating” un-witnessed signatures. They do not employ anybody who is actually qualified to do that and even the “experts” have been famously wrong about signatures in many high profile cases. I personally don’t take their pretend “verifications” with a gain of salt.

Undiscovered Country is climbing in price cause it got optioned yesterday, those sdcc variants are gonna be gold if project goes ahead. foc isnt closed on 1st issue so it sdcc or nothing for spec

The rest of the world is finally realizing how AWESOME connecting covers are!!! Honestly I’ve always had an unexplained weakness for them–the 12-year-old in me thinks it’s cool when covers connect, so I almost always get them over primary covers. This is one of the few times it’s paid off for me, since I ordered the connecting covers for all the PoX HoX books before I’d even seen them…

Always good to see your lists and appreciate the work
One thing – No 3 on list, Black Panther (Vol. 7)#2 2nd Print – why list this over the 1:25 variant of the 1st?
    Thanks

  • Topher

If you got Deadworld 10 on there ya gotta add Atom Tan 1 at some point!
    Great list!
