Dollar Bin Digging 53

Uncanny X-Men #312

For this week, how about some dollar bin books related to the current House of X and Powers of X runs by Jonathan Hickman?

This is the first appearance of the Phalanx. Haven’t heard much from them in a while. They had a whole X-Men crossover event back in the Joe Madureira era of X-men in the Phalanx Covenant. And now Hickman has brought them back in House of X.

To be on the safe side you should also look for the 1st cameo in #305 as well, but I like #312 myself. Both are in bins so just keep your eyes open.

Recent Sales Data:

CGC 9.8 #312 – $55.00 on 7/2/19
CGC 9.8 #305 – $39.95 on 8/11/19
Raw #312 – $8.69 shipped on 9/7/19
Raw #305 – $6.99 shipped on 9/11/19

X-Men Unlimited #27

Another first to keep a lookout for from Hickman’s run is the 1st Karima Shapandar who becomes the Omega Sentinel.

X-Men Unlimited is a series that has no real “keys”, so it’s been dollar bin filler for years. So, this won’t make you a ton of $$$ if you are looking to dig and flip, but it’s still just a cool little book that is worth a buck if you happen upon it in the wild.

And that’s the point. You won’t always find gold in a dollar bin, but if you can find fun little 1sts and solid reads, then it makes the time you spend digging worth it in case you don’t find a $20 flip in there.

Recent Sales Data:

CGC 9.8 – N/A
Raw – $12.26 shipped on 9/8/19

I had no clue about either of those books, will certainly be keeping an eye on those dollar bins, thanks Peter!

Love the 305/312 xmen picks. I think 311 is a cameo of some sort, too. I stocked up on all three a few weeks ago.

    Great job!

There may be a cameo in #305, I don’t remember at this point, but #306 is an issue long fight between archangel and Cameron Hodge as a member of the Phalanx. Oh look, he’s even on the cover. There’s no argument for #312 being a first appearance.

#312 is important because it’s Joe Mad’s first issue of Uncanny.

We are only talking dollar bin books, so I don’t want to do a full on debate over 1st appearances, etc. Especialy
something as convoluted as this X-villain. But I would say the argument stems from an idea that they didn’t appear in their true form until #312. Here’s a quote from wikipedia, “Although appearing in prototype variations in earlier issues, the Phalanx first appeared in their full form in Uncanny X-Men #312 ” . I realize wikipedia isn’t a solid source, but I’m just using it to illustrate that it is a popular opinion on the matter.

While Cameron Hodge was eventually assimilated by the Phalanx in the Phalanx Covenant storyline, that didn’t start until even after uncanny 312. They faced Phalanx prototypes in 305 and 306, they didn’t face the real deal until 312 as I understand it. They didn’t reveal themselves. So are we talking 1st Cletus Kasady in ASM 344 followed by cameo teases like in ASM 359 and 360. But the 361 is the book folks want.

Really it doesn’t matter all that much as they are all dollar bin books. Pick them all up and read them. Everyone should be working on a full uncanny x-men run for their pc’s; especially when you can literally get a few hundred issues in the series for a buck a piece. But like you said Joe Mad is worth it alone for a buck 👍
