Lights, camera, Tin Foil! Greetings and jamutations! The Tin Foil is here with another dose of spec, coming at you from the humid town known as Houston! Lots of Tin Foil goodness coming up as we near the Eve of Hallows. Will DC be in full villain mode? Will Marvel’s zombies make a triumphant return? And what’s going on with Spawn? Let’s delve into these hefty Previews together, Tin Hatters, and welcome the Fall season with all the color that it deserves! As always, the biggest of shout outs to King’s Cache, the only shop in the ATX that doesn’t horde their copies of Gutt Ghost.
The big D and C are gearing up to finish the year strong. Their events are neat unstoppable as they look to dominate another season again.
DC doesn’t usually do store variants (they mostly only do it for Batman and Superman books), so this bodes potentially well for this book. J. Scott Campbell provides the cardstock variant for this book, so make sure you have it on your pull.
Legendary horror director John Carpenter lends his pen and paper to this book. DC is stacking up their horror section well with Mr. Carpenter and Stephen King’s son on their books.
This book seems like a big brain book. Two popular cover artists, Mike Mayhew and Mico Suayan, provide interiors to this life-like Kami Garcia story. Also, Mattina has a variant cover. This group of creators is almost like a dream-team to the Tin Hat, so here’s hoping it delivers.
Did you know there’s a Joker movie coming out in October? DC sure isn’t making you forget by pumping out all these Joker books. Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino are an amazing team though, so this can turn out to be an amazing book. Plus, who’s Mr. Smiles?
This is a book that has gotten a lot of spec buzz early on, mainly because Federici is doing interiors. Don’t skimp on this book, Tin Hatters.
RWBY is a hot anime show put out by the local ATX animation group, Rooster Teeth. I feel this anime is practically on the mainstream cusp, but as always, it’ll be tough to tell if the comic will be sought after. The manga seems to sell well, so we’ll see how this goes. First comic book appearance I think (correct me if I’m wrong). Artgerm is doing a variant, but I’m not sure if it’s for issue 1 or 2. Be on the lookout for that one.
Not sure if these books will create creases in the DC universe down the road. The Batman book looks interesting, but the Superman book might be the winner. Introducing a villain Lois Lane that has the power of Superman. Jeff Loveness has been a personal Tin Hat favorite ever since he wrote Judas.
Is Naomi spec dead yet? In the meantime, this can be another book that Naomi collectors can seek out. More of her secrets promise to be answered. Get the Jamal Campbell variant.
Mattina cardstock variant covers
The Superman Who Laughs is here. The Batman Who Laughs is creating his own Legion of Doom, “The Secret Six”. Why not just call it the Six Who Laugh? This could be a long-term hold if this group continues to stick around for a while (minus Superman).
DCeased #5 & #6
Will Nora Fries succumb to years of a frozen prison and turn villainous? The cover seems to tease it, but we know how those things can go. Be wary if anything.
I would say to create a couple of sets of this series.
Harley with new powers? Let’s see how long this lasts. Another new costume change perhaps?
Artgerm recently revealed his pair of variants for the first issue, and they were lit. Warren Louw also has his fans, and he’s been known to knock it out of the park as well. Let’s see how he follows up.
DC is very Joker- and Harley-centric this month. Combination of Halloween and the Joker film would lead to this of course. Let’s see if DC/Warner Bros./ATT’s gamble pays off.
While DC attempts to capitalize on their present future, Marvel is attempting to build their future future. Phase 6 of the MCU looks it will introduce the Mutants and the Fantastic Four.
Hickman revealed a major drop at SDCC when he announced that Psylocke will give up her mantle and become the new Captain Britain. This book might have a few store variants, pumping up the print run, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to stash a few copies. Who knows, this could be the version of Captain Britain we get on screen.
It seems Miles may finally be rid of the Carnage symbiote, but since he finally popped his symbiote cherry, what lasting effects will it have on him? Will he forever be linked to Knull?
Has Dylan finally bonded? I feel I as though I say that every month…eventually it’ll happen. However, it looks like JeeHyung Lee will do a Mary Jane Venomized cover, so be on the lookout for that.
Get that Artgerm variant, and if you want the virgin, just wait a month for the prices to drop. If Black Cat #1 have a crazy print run of over 200k based on variants alone, this book is guaranteed to top that.
Mirka Andolfo variant
After the success of Into the Spider-Verse, Marvel has finally cashed in. Not sure why it took them 9 months though. Even more Spiders will be introduced including all the Spider-Sonas from the Twitter campaign. Will Tom Cruise get one?
Only pointing this out so you can be wary of this book. Usually when Jameson has schemes to take down Spider-Man, it involves a new villain. Will it for sure be a new villain? Probably not. Maybe it’s a new moustache. Just be aware, Tin Hatters.
Double-sized issue, so don’t miss out on it. What happens to the Immortal Hulk billions of years into the future? He becomes a god, apparently. This is an issue where the price is definitely worth it.
Mark Brooks has knocked all of these covers out of the park. Captain Marvel is ready to become the hero we all deserve. Is it to save Star? Fight Star?
We saw what Artgerm can do with Mary Jane, now let’s see what Jen Bartel has in store. Pick one up if you’re TeamJen.
Will the Ebony/Onyx Surfer finally make an appearance? Is it simply a pipe dream? The epic conclusion to this story is here, and as you know, Donny likes to tie all of his stories into one massive thread.
Will he do it? Will the Madman actually do it? The cover seems to tease so. We all know death means nothing in comics nowadays, but even if it’s just for an issue, a possible death for Rocket Raccoon will make headlines for a lot of comic sites (and maybe even The New York Times).
Terry Dodson sans wife delivers this cover that’d be perfect for a summer special. Here’s hoping that Leah/Marvel make this into a new ongoing.
Lots of good things from Marvel this month, but they are definitely stacking the Mutant books. It’ll be an all out of battle between the X-Men and DC’s Gruesome Couple to see who comes out on top (or The Amazing Mary Jane may just have over a 300k print run).
Wizards have magic powers in their tattoos! Wait a minute, didn’t Antarctic Press do something similar just last month? This will probably get optioned within the year.
The boys are back! Not The Boys boys, but the time traveling boys. Sean Murphy might be missed, but Eric Canete can definitely fill those shoes. Also, anything Mark Millar does always gets optioned.
Dead Rabbit is back! After the drama of last year, it seems Image has things under control again. New name, new title, new universe? I’m not sure if this will be a reboot or if they’ll continue the story they started. This book will also have a 1:10 variant, so be on the lookout for it.
Everyone is on this book due to the appearance of She-Spawn; however, there’s a possibility she’ll come out in issue 300. Jerome Opeña basically drew an homage to Olivier Coipel’s Amazing Spider-Man #13 (2014) variant. The Spawnverse is upon us, and it seems the issues after 300 will continue to flesh it out.
Dustin Nguyen provides an amazing variant cover.
Artgerm continues to kill it on any piece he does.
The Tin Hat says this over and over, but I love me some Jeff Loveness. Cold War. Spies. Russians. Alien monsters?! Hell yeah.
Jenny Frison kills this main Buffy cover. There’s also an incentive variant by Frison (it could just be a virgin), but if it removed that white title, I’m all for it.
Ablaze is putting out a new Conan series but with more sex! Will Penis-Gate become Conan-Gate? Will this be the first appearance of Lil’Conan? Does penis spec still work? If anything, get that gorgeous Mirka variant.
This promising-looking series continues to look promising. There are some pretty great variant covers, so pick your favorite.
Edgar Allan Poe punching Adolf Hitler. Get it.
American Mythology Comics
This zany cartoon that’s been going off-and-on for almost 30 years is finally getting an American comic book. First airing on Fox Kids before being thrown around like a used rag on various networks, this French show has zaniness and wackiness reminiscent of Golden Age Hanna-Barbera cartoons. Will this be the next Rick and Morty #1? Probably not. But for all the die-hard fans that continue to follow it around, this can be a great PC book.
It seems this book is an annual book. The third issue is finally out, and Antarctic Press is celebrating by reprinting the first 2 issues with covers reminiscent of the pictures inside of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
Paul Pope cover. Nuff said.
There you go, Tin Hatters! October since to be heavy with the Big 2! Lots of promising changes, but it’s all about the flip. As always, waddle slowly, 10 is better than 20, and farewell from the world of tomorrow!
