Wednesday Warriors 5/22/19

Welcome to the NEW Wednesday Warriors!

Each week we will go head to head picking just ONE book in each category in a battle for NCBD supremacy. Best of all, you get to pick the winner! Sound off in the comments if you’re #TeamSimpleman or #TeamBolo and we will recap each week in the following weeks Column.

So its Brian vs. Jack.

Simpleman vs. Bolo.

And there can be only ONE.

Most Looking Forward to Reading Marvel

A refreshing seclusion from the War of the Realms tie-in issues. The previous issue introduced a brand new character in Starling (created by Saladin Ahmed and Javier Garron) and issue #6 picks up right where #5 left off. This also features the first cover appearance of Starling. We’re still not sure if she’s a hero or villain but it seems Tombstone is an enemy to her so for Miles an enemy of my enemy is my friend.

There is a lot of interest is Shuri spec as it relates to the MCU. This issue sees the return of Shuri as Black Panther. I don't think this is a heavily ordered series and has an outside chance to be a spec hit.

Most Looking Forward to Reading DC

One of the most underrated DC books in my opinion. This book has a print run of under 8k and the new character “Smoke” they’ve introduced is great! I’m really looking forward to this issue.

The Astrid Arkham swerve really caught spectaculars off guard. I'm interested to read about her origin and see where this spec will go.

Most Looking Forward to Reading Indie

A story about a treacherous and dangerous escape from a Siberian Gulag in 1953? I’m in!

Kevin Eastman and Ben Bishop team up to tell a very meta story about a creator who creates an anamorphic team of comic book heroes young and life and struggles to keep up with that success. I was a t a panel at NC Comicon where Eastman unveiled plans for the original Kickstarter. Theses are printed by his new label and may be scarce. There is little buzz but could take off with the turtle crowd.

Cover Art

Continuing the Flash Year One story from Flash #70. I love this cover from Derrick Chew. It seems people love or hate his art style. I fall into the love category. His style reminds me of Artgerm.

I could have picked any of the covers for this book and been happy but its the TMNT homage that catches my eye. I also like the Stan Sakai cover with Usagi Yojimbo  featured on the cover. This is the one shot of the comic inside the Drawing Blood comic. I expect this to be even lower printed than Drawing Blood. Bolo

Regular Price Variant Marvel

I still stick by these Battle Lines variants being sought after down the road as collectors want to build complete sets and this Maxx Lim variant is gorgeous!

I'm with Brian on these variants. I love the carnage one and have no doubt the Venom book will outperform Avengers, but I am a sucker for Blade and there are so few to choose from.

Regular Price Variant DC

A connecting cover to Mark Brooks’ Detective Comics #1003 to create one epic picture! Mark Brooks plus Arkham Knight equals a must have for me.

My dude Brian talks about Artgerm fatigue alot but I also think we are seeing that with Middleton.  This cover is a slam dunk but has gotten little buzz. Still love the cover and its a hold for me.

Regular Price Variant Indie

It’s no secret this has been one of my favorite series lately. Vick Ram’s writing combined with Sumit Kumar’s art brings this fantasy horror comic to life. And now they are releasing new printings with these gorgeous covers and I must have them!

If Brian gets to pick two, so do I! Faithless is a hit from Boom! Studios and the Erotica variant for #1 was the talk of social media. #1 gets a 2nd print Erotica Variant and #2 gets a 1st print Variant.

Incentive Variant

Issue #1 incentives are still holding strong on the secondary market. I see issue #2 being successful as well. With the issue only having two covers, that should help make this cover worth picking up.

Sword Master appeared on the cover to #1 but not in the book. With his solo series already announced and this being his first appearance and an Incentive  to a #2 issue, I expect this one to be big.

Top Spec Pick

This issue concludes the first chapter of Knights of the Golden Sun. Great story, phenomenal art and a print run under 2k. If this story ever gets optioned, it’s a gold mine. I’ll buy that $4 lottery ticket.

For all the reasons I stated about the incentive, #2 is a solid long term hold and a great spec play.

Sleeper Pick

I think a lot of people won’t realize this is a new cover by a new artist (Maria Llovet). The print run will be lower than the first print and they won’t realize until after the fact because the book is polybagged.

Unfortunately it looks like they kept the same cover art from the first print. None the less I expect this to be under ordered and in demand from those who loved the first print and those who missed out. This could see heat.

Last Week Look Back

I won't even break these down individually because it's bad, real bad. Dark Horse spec hear saved us each once.

Final: Draw 1-1-8

It's a sad, sad ….draw.   What did you guys think? Who took last week?  Who will win this week? Sound off in the comments!

I look forward to this article every week, but only have a vague sense of how the ‘Last Week Look Back’ is scored. Would it be possible in future installments to include a slight blurb on how the scoring works or where the points were given? My assumption for this week’s “Look Back’ and how the scoring works is that both Simpleman and Bolo scored a point and the rest of their picks (8) were misses?

    Nice list.

I love Artgerm’s style, but don’t care much for Chew (too busy in my opinion – see Harley Quinn #58).

Does anyone know where I can find a complete list of the Marvel Battle Lines variants? Thanks.

Artgerm and Middleton fatigue? That’s gotta be a short term thing I’d imagine. I would think that would possibly make some of the more overlooked ones now be more sought after later. Both are AMAZING cover artists and I think that in the long run incredible art on iconic covers will outlast trends.
Also Faithless #4 is going to have a Jenny Frison erotic variant! That thing’s gonna be FIRE.

If the two Eastman books take off, most of the heat will be for the Retailer Incentive variants that were limited to 500 or 300.
