Variant Heat Check for 5/13/19

War of Realms New Agents of Atlas #1 1:50 Zircher Variant

HEAT CHECK STATUS: pepperpepperpepperpepper

Well that escalated quickly, as prices shot up to over $200 in less than a week. I guess there are a few new first appearances, but just like Naomi, it’s the fear of missing out that is driving these crazy prices. What do these characters have to do on TV or in the movies to justify these prices?

Uncanny X-Force #20 Renaud Variant

HEAT CHECK STATUS: pepperpepperpepperpepper

I’ve talked about this book a few times, so I’ll keep it short and sweet. The spread between a 9.6 and a 9.8 is almost $1K, which means if you are buying a raw you better make sure it will grade out.

TMNT #18 Torres RI Variant

HEAT CHECK STATUS: pepperpepperpepper

I love TMNT, and this Nirvana swipe is perfect. As much as I love it, it’s crazy that this book sold for $125.

    As always, outstanding list!
Amazing Spider-Man 678 Venom Variant is Venom Variant to own! Iron Man 213 is a distant second IMO.
Does all this news regarding agents of atlas do anything for Amazing Fantasy 15?

Do you mean Invincible Iron man 512?

I thought Agents of Atlas had some interesting new first appearances, but overall a poor read. However, why does it need tv/movie spec to be a high dollar spec book? Weather you liked it or not it does have a lot going for it. Predominantly Asian cast, all the first appearances, Cho is a popular character, and it’s extremely hard to find. That said, the Shang Chi movie is on the horizon.

because that’s what is fueling this entire market.

Exactly! These prices feel like a bit of a warning sign at the moment

However, if the prices cool down on the 1:25 or 1:50 after a while, I’ll definitely pick one up, as I agree with you accustomfigures, rarity plus a bunch of first appearances is nice to have, even if the characters don’t make it big. But the FOMO is not good

The hilarious part is that there are some really good specs that are going un-specced on (if that’s the right way to say it…?) because of alot of the “FOMO” on such new characters like Naomi, or whoever it might be next month, let alone next year. An example I would point to is the first appearance of both Okoye and Nakia in one book, which is Black Panther 1 from Christopher Priest’s run in the late 1990s. In my opinion this is where the real potential is for collectors and speculators, identifying those first appearances that just have not taken off yet for whatever reason, but should have, and almost definitely will. Two big characters already in the movies, and one would assume, who will be in another few at least. It is also the first appearance of Zuri, played by Forest Whitakker in the movie, as an added bonus. That issue can still be found for around ten bucks in very fine condition. All the hype on something like Naomi leaves books like that a bit under the radar. Snap them up guys!

FYI- You have the weeknd artist info for that uncanny x force 20 venom variant.

Also, that one single, solitary sale of a 9.8 that you are evidently using to deem this book “hot”, is an obvious outlier. You know that because, as you mention, the book only sells for about $350 in a 9.6, and you’re lucky if you can get about a 2X multiple in price from a 9.6 to a 9.8 in the world of moderns. In reality, with multiple lackluster sales in 9.6 sales and down, that is about an $800 book in a 9.8, despite that one, possibly fake Ebay “buy it now” sale.

*You have the *wrong* artist info for UXF 20 variant

I really liked New Agents of Atlas for a read. I thought that the girl with the Bear Spirit was very cool and I can’t wait to ee more of her. Sword Master and Wave look very cool too. I really think this book will be a KEY. I should have grabbed the 1:50 when I had the chance. I just didn’t like the cover nearly as much as the 1:25. I bought 2 1:25’s instead. Live and learn.

I haven’t read it, but yeah, Dan Bi (Crescent?), with the bear spirit pal, looked interesting. I thought the others looked a bit generic though

Atlas is hot because of Aero, Marvel’s answer to Naomi. She already has her own ongoing series coming out in June or July. I’m wondering about the second prints potential, which features great cover of her solo.

You’re right, there is some crazy fear of missing out going on. These characters are going to have to do ALOT to justify those prices. So many characters and teams like this that just come and go. Literally the vast majority of comic book characters become nobodies that no-one remembers.

Not many books are going to become Runaways #1 with a hit tv show to back it up. Bear in mind, that series came from a superstar writer and was a very original idea.

It’s a lot of financial risk for a book that has no guarantee of anything.

Does anybody remember KENAN KONG, who appeared only three years ago!! sparked a gold rush, had his own series, lots of new supporting characters etc etc. His first appearance (New Super Man #1) is now selling for $2 near mint, and $8 for the B cover…

Or even Doctor Strange #4 (from 2015)? It had a whole bunch of first appearances, all tied to a major character already established in the MCU. They could conceivably go somewhere someday, potentially. But it’s now just over cover price for NM.

52 Weeks #6, introducing The Great Ten. 10 new characters created by Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison and Greg Rucka in 2006. They went absolutely nowhere.

These are only some that spring to mind.

Some of these characters could blow up like the GotG, but trying to predict them is basically impossible.

Admittedly, it’s only the 1:25 and the 1:50 selling at high prices, but the list of characters that just disappear is a long one
