Indie Spotlight Series 30

Hello everyone and welcome back to another edition of Indie Spotlight Series.  Definitely a little lighter week again as there are just not a ton of titles releasing.  That being said, I still think there are some good books to be found out there so let's get to it.

Last Stop On The Redline 1

Dark Horse Comics

Last week saw a huge announcement from Dark Horse Comics and Netflix that gave the media company first look at developing any and all Dark Horse properties. After the recent success of Umbrella Academy, I think Netflix has now caught on and sees the comic industry as a cash cow. That being said, I think new releasing titles from Dark Horse may see a little more heat.  Now don't get me wrong, I don't think EVERY Dark Horse release will get hot but if it has a epic premise and solid writers I would take notice.  Last Stop on The Redline definitely fits the bill in my opinion. The story follows an investigation into a brutal murder in Boston that keeps leading to dead end after dead end. Seems like a good idea with a supernatural twist in it as well. I wouldn't sleep on this book if you can pick it up at cover.

All Time Comics Zerosis Deathscape 0

Floating World Comics

Admittedly, I don't know much about this series as it has been around for a while, but this is a great spot to jump on (or so previews said, we’ll see……).  This book is written by Josh Bayer and Josh Simmons and is supposed to take ATC into a whole new era! This issue is also supposed to have a first appearance of a character named Red Maniac. Not sure how prevalent he will be down the road but love cover A and am presuming that’s him on it.  That brings me to my next point… the artwork is fantastic from what I’ve seen so far. Trevor von Eeden and Gabrielle Bell absolutely killed it and bring back that Golden Age feel for sure. There is also an incentive cover B that I absolutely love. To qualify for the incentive retailers had to order at least 5 copies of cover A to unlock unlimited orders of cover B. I will be looking to pick up both covers this week and actually think this book may heat up a little.

Aberrant Season 2 #2

Action Lab Danger Zone

Baseball card collectors this is the comic for you!!! HUH?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Yep you heard me right! Action Lab has brought back the infamous Billy Ripken F*** Face error card in this week’s Aberrant Season 2 #2.  Again, I admittedly know nothing about the series and confess that this is 100% a cover buy but how could you not want this in your collection? I think this will be a very hard to find book this week as homage covers are hot. For those reasons this is my PICK OF THE WEEK.

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez & Freshman Force Who Dis One Shot

Devils Due / 1First Comics

Similar to the Trump Space Titans we get another political masterpiece (YEA RIGHT) from Devils Due/1First Comics.  This parody follows Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, a U.S. Representative of the 14th congressional court in New York.  Cortez happens to be a very polarizing figure whether you love or hate that.  Honestly, hard to predict what these type of books will do on the secondary market but I almost always pick them up if I can find them for cover price.  If this sounds like a book your interested in make sure to be on the lookout for it and also be aware that there was also a preview edition released months ago.  The preview copies have a Early Voter Edition button on the front cover.

The Devils 2

Antarctic Press

After a long delay The Devils 2 will release this week!  The first issue definitely had some heat behind it but the huge amount of time in between books has all but killed the reader buzz. This book showed huge promise out of the gate with a stellar first issue so I will give it a shot for sure. Also, I think this book will have a tiny print run and be very hard to find. There was some media rumors surrounding this title at first but to my knowledge that has since died off. This book also comes with a soundtrack as issue 1 did.  I’ve heard nothing but great things about that as well.

Worth A Read

Excellence 1

Image Comics

Went into this not knowing what to expect though I thoroughly enjoyed the entire book.  The story centers around a young boy who is born into a family of magicians.  For some reason the boy is a slower learner than his peers and is constantly seeking approval that is very hard to come by.  The book does a superb job of world building and showing the boy’s progress through the years. The story leads up to his big test that will prove he is ready to go into the world and take on what his family has been doing for generations.  All the boy actually wants is to please his father and be accepted by him.  Very near the end of the book an opportunity arises for the boy to actually do this!  Or so he thought………… Awesome read and I will definitely be picking up the next issue.

  • Horrific

Afterburn Crossfire has a Virgin Variant from Slab City Comics that’s limited to 100 copies. If the book heats up that book could come into play I think.
I’m really digging the All Time Comics as well. Great write up!

The Druids Path one-shot looks pretty cool. I got mine last week, haven’t had a chance to read it yet. The book is a magazine size (Very similar to Batman Damned, maybe a bit smaller) and had a $9.99 cover price. I’ll read it and report back on the story.

Awesome ! I actually don’t mind the magazine style. I know some hate it. Thanks brother. Can’t wait to hear what you think about it.

Alright I just read it. So first off it’s 48 pages plus illustrations and character descriptions in the back. It’s actually a really fun read, I enjoyed it.

It’s kind of one of those things were I wish it wasn’t a one-shot so they could have done more world building and character development but they do a great job of it for only 48 pages.

There’s two stories going on at the same time, one in the past and one in the future; which I didn’t realize until halfway through. I would describe the art as childish — not meaning poor — and vibrant. There’s also some nudity at the end that I wasn’t expecting. Lol Overall 7 out of 10. Worth the $9.99. Also has a gorgeous cover.

Last stop on the Red Line has potential. Worth picking up 1 or 5. Well done as usual.
