Dollar Bin Digging 35

New Avengers: Luke Cage #1

(Apr 2010)

In honor of the Marvel Universe’s 1st Filipina Superhero, Wave, I wanted to celebrate with a couple picks from a couple of my favorite Filipino artists.

First up, Eric Canete, whose Anime style still holds a little of the Aeon Flux vibe to it. And there’s good reason for that, as Eric worked on that animated show before breaking in to comics. This little 3 issue mini can be found out there in bins so be alert.

As you can see his art style is pretty unique. And while he has some really nice Incentive covers, like Weapon X #3, there’s still plenty of books that you may find in the bins. End League, Cybernary 2.0, and Iron Man: Enter the Mandarin are all series he’s worked on that you may come across while digging.

Don't Feel Like Digging?

Hulk Vol 3 #2

(Apr 2014)

My next choice to look at is Jerome Opeña. Another excellent artist from the Philippines who’s is probably best known for his work with Rick Remender, most recently on Seven To Eternity. But their collaborations go all the way back to Fear Agent.

But this excellent Abomination cover gives a sense of the high level of detail he puts into his work. He also had a pretty nice run on Uncanny X-Force from issues #25-32. So be on the lookout for those as well. He has also had a decent selection of Incentive variants. But that’s a spotlight for another day, maybe in a future Usual Suspects.

But who knows, Abomination may find his way back in Al Ewing’s Immortal Hulk. That run is creating back issue gold, as he is returning old and long forgotten characters. So why not bring back Emil Blonsky? Are all of the Gamma characters Immortal? Maybe.

So until next time, keep on digging. Who knows what you’ll find…
