Variant Heat Check for 5/7/19

Thor #337 Newsstand Variant

HEAT CHECK STATUS: pepperpepperpepperpepper

There were a few Beta Ray Bill easter eggs in various Marvel movies, but with rumors swirling that he will make an appearance in GOTG vol. 3, this book has absolutely exploded as raws are hitting over $100 and 9.8’s hitting close to $500. The smart money was buying this book a few years ago.

Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider #1 Retailer Incentive Variant

HEAT CHECK STATUS: pepperpepperpepper

Although this was not Robbie Reyes’ first appearance as Ghost Rider, sales started to pick up once all of the All-New Ghost Rider variants got out of reach. Being a one per store variant, there were probably thousands of these printed, but prices are on the rise with raws selling for $50-60 and a 9.8 hitting $100.

She Hulk #1 Blank/Sketch Variant

HEAT CHECK STATUS: pepperpepperpepper

Once again showing that there is a back market for blank sketch covers, this She Hulk book is rare and has yet to be reprinted as a blank cover (which is key for maintaining scarcity). The most recent sales were $35-40.

All new Ghost Rider has gotten really hot! I still like the 1:25 variant of #1 the best. Bought three Thor #337 a while back…Was going to buy a few here and there but this rumor hit. Oh well.

You are correcto-mundo. Bought a Thor 337 Newsstand CGC 9.6 several years ago for a really good price. Thank goodness. The best one to have is the Canadian Edition. Newsstands from 1983 are fairly easy to come by. Only have the Canadian Edition of Thor 338. Which is a CGC 9.6 Sig Series.

I have a Canadian newsstand of Thor 339 in NM or better shape. Watch out for that one should Stormbreaker come out…

Yup Canadian 337 in anything resembling a decent grade should be on fire!

100% agree when it comes to non-reprint variants, the Canadian price variants are more important to the hobby in terms of scarcity than the whole “Direct Market” vs “Newsstand Retail” variances with many comics of that 1980’s era.

Biggest laugh I ever had at a convention was a couple years back, when I handed over my copy of Thor 337 to have Walt Simonson sign it.

He goes ” There it is! I wondered who had it!”

I say, “What? Huh?” (sounding so intelligent, right?)

And Simonson replies, ” Well, I was pretty sure I’d already signed every copy of this book they printed, but I always thought there was one more out there!”
