I have collected comics since I was around 8 years old and collect them because I love to read and I love art so they do the best job of combining my two favorite passions!

Collecting comics connects me to my 11 year old self who rode his dirt bike to downtown Fargo with his friends and ventured into Lantern Comics for the first time. That first visit is a vivid memory, even the TMNT #1 on the shelf that I didn’t buy because it looked boring.

I starte collecting comics in 1985 and stopped when college made me broke but I am back now and loving the energy around comics now-a-days. I agree with Daganash that looking through long boxes is just satisfying!

I started collecting as a kid because I loved the art and stories. It was also something I did with my dad. I continue collecting asd an adult because I love the art and the stories and it makes me think of my dad.

I gotten back into comics due to my PTS that incurred during the war. I love the story’s and especially the covers, they are a work of art. It relieves my anxiety when I read or look at the illustration.

While I had a good childhood, collecting comics helped me out when I was a kid and had to deal with issues that were bigger than me. Fear, insecurity, loneliness, and other feelings seemed easier to cope with when I was presented with some characters that were like me (marvel) and others that had problems that seemed so great it gave me hope I could overcome my issues (DC). I kept collecting because as an adult they still help me escape reality and keep young at heart.

I collect comics because I parted ways with all my comics as a kid and now I have the space to keep them!

I have been reading and collecting comics since me and my twin were old enough to read. My father introduced us to comics and it was a way of bonding with him. As I got older and life got harder, I realized that reading and collecting comics brought me peace and helped me remember the better younger years. It has helped me get through tough times and PTSD and I credit comics with helping me keep my sanity, or what’s left of it.

A blend of great art and fun storytelling keeps me coming back for more.

Transformers 5 that Shockwave cover… drew me in and I haven’t looked back.

It all started when I was a kid. We would go see my grandpa in Texas, and we stopped at a grocery store. Standing in line I looked over and saw xmen #1 Jim Lee. It was in a pack of 10 random comics. Asked my dad if I could please have it, and he said yes. I read them the whole visit at my grandpa’s house, then the whole ride home (12 hours).

I collect comics because of the nostalgic feeling it brings me, teleporting me back to simpler days of picking up fun entertainment and revisiting the books time and time again. It’s now been even more enjoyable as I probably get more pleasure in that “thrill of the chase” hunting down and searching for certain issues more so than actually owning them once I buy them. It seems like a never ending challenge that rejuvenates my enthusiasm towards the hobby. I’ve already learned not to collect solely for the economics, as value at times is just a side benefit to the collection, although I also see them as legitimate investments that can be liquidated in the future more so than buying things that depreciate like cars, technology, clothes, etc.

I collect comic books because they connect me to my youth.
That, and because I hate money.😀

My brother and I were literally potty trained with comics. Maybe a bit TMI, but they were the only thing that would keep us from shitting our pants. So I’m afraid to stop reading them…

I collect comics strictly for street cred

  • Avatar

    Why do I read comics?
Because the plotlines on the backs of baseball cards are all pretty similar.

  • Avatar

I collect comics because my dad has collected comics for as long as I can remember. I remember going to Shinders as a child so my dad could get his weekly titles. We collect nearly opposite issues. I collect and read mostly Marvel and some independent horror titles and he collects mainly DC titles. They tell imaginative plots and provide a bonding experience as we exchange and talk about our favorite issues. I was the one who got him into Immortal Hulk as Hulk is my favorite character and I’ve been building a collection of his titles the most.

I collect comics for the escapism these stories and characters offer.

    Because I love Spidey.

Because I love the thrill of the hunt.

And finally because, what else is there to do on a Wednesday.?? 😉

Been buying for 38 years. Cant stop!

I collect comics for the reading primarily. The story telling in them is superb, and the art is an addition that confirms the saying “A picture tells a story of a thousand words”. I collect specifically for the stories that interest me, and if there is spec, that just makes the collecting that much more fun. One cannot deny that nostalgia of some of the heroes we all collect give us, but what makes it fun to continue to collect are the talented artists and storytellers. For example, some writers I like to follow more and more of their work, collecting back issues, once I read stories that really blow me away. But there are also those books that really change you, impact you, and touch your soul. Books that give you messages and teach you lessons, sometimes at times in your life you did not know you needed it. My favourite book of all, talks to me to help me get over heartache, recover from depression, and see light when darkness seems to take over.

Collecting at its core, is a love for the books, stories, and art, but after its all said and done, it leads us into things like this; communicating with others who enjoy the same things as we do. Going to your LCS, having chats about stories new and old, meeting friends who share the same passions, and having spec chats online with friends you make but have not met (until a con brings you all together).

Why I collect comics, mainly because I got addicted to enjoy the color and reading great stories. But I have my 7th grade adviser to thank for this as my reading level was below standards. He game me three comic books a daredevil and two uncanny x-men. Since that moment all I did was use any extra cash I got to buy either a DD or x-men book. It was a good thing during those times that there were not all these expensive variant covers or I might’ve just shied away from buying.

The art, the stories and especially to support the medium. Love this stuff

Irrationality, ego feed, competition, envy, desire, greed, want, and a touch of escapism back to a simpler time when all of those things I listed were just a feeling of awe and inspiration of a child reading about a superhero. Collecting is coveting. But what the hell, you only live once, and if by chance I happen to have a couple of better books than Khoi, well hell, I’m a winner. Jaguar blood!

  • JamesGoodwin

I collect not only to satisfy my love of genre but to have a common interest with my two children!

Just love a good story Nuff Said!

I like collectibles, art and a good story. And maybe make a little money on the side as well! Comics can bring all that together. And there is some nostalgia about escaping back to the days of my youth.

I collect comics because, like Calgon, they take me away from the stress in my life. Comics inspire my creative mind, challenge my worldview, and allow me a glimpse into the experiences of other people. The art, the writing, and the storylines connect me to a more Sun-Times time in my life.

Comics take me on a journey I would never be able to go on without them… they also foster my own creativity as an artist and story teller.

I read comics because it allows me to to escape and be engulfed in another world outside of my daily, non stop responsibilities. It gives me something to look forward to and allows me to be entranced in another person’s art, weather visually or imaginary. I absolutely love it!!!!!!!

Well, it has certainly turned into a compulsion, so that may be the current reason that I collect, but it all started by getting hand-me-down comics from my father and brother–so it also feels like tradition. I still read comics, in addition to collecting them, because I like the escapism of getting lost in the big impossible worlds that comics contain within their pages.

As a kid, I loved the Universal Monsters, posters, models. Then I saw a cover of a horror comic that had an ice cream cone dripping blood and held by a skeleton’s hand…. And I was hooked. Over the years I’ve forgotten that comic book’s title, but still keep my eyes peeled in case I see that creepy, beautiful cover.

I love to read and organize my comics. Something about putting them away after I’ve read them twice in alphabetical order brings me joy.

I also enjoy looking through them periodically and recalling the stories from the covers. If I can’t remember them I reread them.

I collect for good stories, art and the history of it all!

I collect comics because I still believe that one day they’ll be worth more than what I paid for them. I know, I know, there are better ways to invest one’s money. It’s just that buying more shares of stock in some company is way too boring. I do it anyway, buy stock that is, but it is not nearly as enjoyable as heading over to the lcs on Saturday to see if they still have any of the prior Wednesday’s comics that are heating up for cover price.

My parent’s divorced when I was 10, and comics were not only a great escape for me, but were also motivational. I loved any Spider-Man title and seeing him overcome the odds always picked me up a little bit.
This was in the mid-90’s. The Spider-Man TV show was on, I played Maximum Carnage on Sega, and had a huge collection of Marvel action figures, but I always had the most fun going to the comics shop to pick out issues (based on the cover) and just reading them alone or with friends.

I collect for mostly selfish reasons i guess. Keeps me connected with things i have loved since i was a child. I also see it as an investment.

Mostly i think i have the collector DNA, which may be the same DNA that lends to my very addictive personality.

So yeah, love of the craft and faulty DNA are why i collect.

I collect comics because well it’s fun. I actually collect many thing, but comics is probably the thing that I collect that I have the most fun with. I love the stories, the art, the collecting, the talks with other people, and the culture that comes along with it.

I enjoy the endless variety of stories . They were a great distraction . Even after 50 years of reading I can still find fascinating books . I often tell people that comics are what gave me a love of reading . That’s why whenever we hangout with friends with kids I ask if they like comics , if they give me anything like a yes I send their child home with some free stuff . Hopefully they’ll become another reader .
