Wednesday Warriors 4/17/19

Welcome to the new Wednesday Warriors!

Each week we will go head to head picking just ONE book in each category in a battle for NCBD supremacy. Best of all, you get to pick the winner! Sound off in the comments if you’re #TeamSimpleman or #TeamBolo and we will recap each week in the following weeks Column.

So its Brian vs. Jack.

Simpleman vs. Bolo.

And there can be only ONE.

Most Looking Forward to Reading Marvel

Hands down this is one of my favorite titles to read right now. Chip Zdarsky as author and Marco Checchetto on interiors make for great storytelling and this series has not disappointed.

I don’t care! I am a Rob Liefeld fan.  Come at me bro! I loved issue #1 and as a 90’s X everything fan, I am super happy to see Rob return to the top at Marvel.  His twitter activity has been questionable at best but I’m unflappable. I’m on board this train and not jumping off.

Most Looking Forward to Reading DC

I feel this story has been often overlooked as it is upstaged by bigger DC titles. This has been a great story and the series is ending with this issue. It has a great ASM #50 homage cover to it as well. I hope we have not seen the last of Ethan Avery.

Again, please tell me how reader buzz doesn’t equal dollars.  This series was born in reader buzz and rises to new heights on a weekly basis.  Each issue could have a big piece of the Naomi puzzle such as costume, powers, and codename.

Most Looking Forward to Reading Indie

The first issue was great! I’ll admit I had to read it three times to fully absorb the story but I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to get my hands on issue #2. I’m not the biggest fan of Ian Bertman’s art style but it really fits the narrative of the story.

What more can I say about this epic than has already been said?  I have truly enjoyed this story and for those saying reader buzz doesn’t equal spec value, check the ebay sales of this book around release day for every book released.  We are talking 5 straight hits. I have no doubt this will be the 6th.

Cover Art

I’m hit or miss with Lucio Parrillo covers but this one is amazing. A lot of people were well aware of this before FOC so I don’t expectIn my personal opinion, there’s really not that many great covers this week. But Mico Suayan’s variant cover for Teen Titans really sticks out to me. I’m really digging the shattered glass look. it to be hard to find as it was most likely heavily pre-ordered.

I am a sucker for GI Joe and Gi Joe incentive variants to be specific.  This cover speaks to me. I don’t expect it to have a ton of spec value but you never know.  A lot of Joe variants dry up over time.

Regular Price Variant Marvel

I’m pretty burnt out over Captain Marvel as of late but this Asgardian Variant from Gerald Parel is worth picking up. With most people’s attention focused on Symbiote Spider-Man and Cult of Carnage variants, this book could fly under the radar.

Full disclosure, I don’t love any Marvel regular price variant this week.  But I do love late printings especially with fresh cover art. It is even better when they take the first appearance in a book and switch it to the cover.   We also know Marvel wants a women’s team for future movies. Who knows.

Regular Price Variant DC

Love him or hate him, Mattina does great covers and this one is no different. Combine that with the limited trade dress on DC’s B covers and this book is a beauty. It’s one of those books you collect a run of artist’s covers on.

In a light week for DC cover B’s, this book is a standout.  I like a lot of the Nightwing variants but none seem to do much.  I have hope for a future Nightwing movie making a lot of these variants pop.  This has a movie poster feel. Admittedly, I am a comic optimist.

Regular Price Variant Indie

Love the art style on this cover and I’ve been enjoying the new era of Transformers in this series. Megatron is beginning to assemble a new security force which will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I love this cover.  It really contrasts with the light hero cover on the 1st print. Mauricio Villarreal is back with another banger.  This will be low printed and undoubtedly under ordered. I have no doubt this will be $10-15 book. Tune in to the Bolo Live Show tomorrow on the Simpleman’s Comics Youtube Channel  where I will be giving on of these away that I received from a recent Mad Cave Store order.

Incentive Variant

This book may be overshadowed by other incentive variants this week. Heck even this book itself has a 1:50 incentive. I love this cover and Gerardo Zaffino has a big fan base. This will be sought out by his collectors for sure. Plus… We get to see Frank Castle punish and army of monsters!

The orders for this book were due at the same time as #1.  We already know #1 was massively under ordered. Liefeld has let everyone know it as well.  My guess is this will be easy profit if bought at ratio.

Top Spec Pick

Angel #0 was not solicited and is being distributed by Boom to stores with their Buffy the Vampire Slayer #4. In addition to that, each store will get 1 copy of the Thank You variant.

Big name artist, hype from the Thank You Variant Brian mentioned, and a first appearance or death? Solicits to Issue #5 make this a worthy gamble for me in this spot.

Sleeper Pick

Not too many stores even order Knights of the Golden Sun, so I doubt the second print will be widely available. Plus, it features an all new cover, making this book more desirable for completionist collectors.

The creators said the 4th Print was the last but because of a sell out they HAD to do a 5th. Well this too is sold out so I may even expect a 6th at this point. I don't care. I can't get enough Die!
