Dollar Bin Digging 31

Mystique #19

People have been going crazy over that Amber Blake #1 variant the last week or so. It is a very nice cover. If you like that, then you should go grab yourself this gorgeous Mike Mayhew cover. Twice the firearms, and twice as nice IMO.

This was a very underrated run with a number of great Mayhew covers from issues 9 thru 24. All are worth picking up. A couple of my favorites apart from this one are #16 which reminds me of that Catherine Zeta Jones movie Entrapment and #18 which is like the original Mission Impossible.

Don't Feel Like Digging?

Daredevil #26

Sticking with an underrated cover artist theme this week, I present to you Chris Samnee.

His art is very clean, and one of his greatest strengths IMO, is in his layouts. Always interesting and giving you multiple layers. Look at how the clothesline also presents the title. Brilliant work.

Sometimes, great art is worth the dig. So don’t worry about checking apps or lists when you dig. Just rely on your eyes. If you like it, just grab it. I also inset another interesting layout example, in his cover to Wolverine #306.

Don't Feel Like Digging?

So until next time, remember while you dig that…

“It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard… is what makes it great.” – Jimmy Dugan

“Sometimes, great art is worth the dig. So don’t worry about checking apps or lists when you dig. Just rely on your eyes. If you like it, just grab it.”

This is, by far, the greatest advice to give newbies. You can collect the key issues. You can collect all the variants. At the end of the day it is YOUR personal collection.

    Love these article spotlights.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I feel it’s necessary to reiterate that idea every so often as you never know when newer collectors might be finding our stuff. But whether it’s just for the art, or just for the read, it’s your money at the end of the day.

Plus this article only features 2 books each week. So the idea is to share the concepts of digging so folks can start building on these ideas and generating their own finds.

Funny thing is, if Mattina had done that Amber Blake cover people would be going crazy saying he stole it from the Mystique cover.

Very true. People do love to pile on. That said, I am sure there are plenty of other examples of this pose out there. If anyone has any, please share.

I just connected these two books because Amber Blake got hot and I was already planning on covering this Mystique book for a while now. The planets just aligned for it to be this week.

Haha, reckon you’re clutching at straws there for Mattina!
The covers aren’t similar enough, and that scene on the Amber Blake variant takes place in the book itself. Mattina’s problem and controversy comes from him literally tracing over the art of others or a replication.

The Amber Blake cover is much nicer – more natural, and is a depiction of the actual writer of the book. But… that Mystique cover is cool as…

The advice to pick out art you like from bins needs to be widespread. Great stuff.

I just looked past that Mystique the other day, guess I’ll have to pick it up.
