The Wednesday One 4/03/19

Each week we will go head to head picking just ONE book in each category in a battle for NCBD supremacy. Best of all, you get to pick the winner! Sound off in the comments if you’re #TeamSimpleman or #TeamBolo and we will recap each week in the following weeks Column.

So its Brian vs. Jack.

Simpleman vs. Bolo.

And there can be only ONE. The Wednesday One.

Most Looking Forward to Reading Marvel

I cannot put into words how much I love Jason Aaron’s run on Thor. I can’t wait to read this story. Soooo many covers, but I need only one to read. Let’s get it on!!!!

While I will definitely be reading War of Realms and have all faith in Jason Aaron, this Champions arc with a dark Miles Morales story has me hooked. It's the book I am most looking forward to seeing where the story goes.

Most Looking Forward to Reading DC

Part II of Terminus Agenda. Carried over from Teen Titans #28. Deathstroke is imprisoned in Damien’s secret prison. Which might not be so secret now that someone else has found out about it. I love classic Teen Titans vs Deathstroke stories and this is shaping up to be a great one.

The solicit for this one promises both secrets of the heroes to be revealed as well as a bold new start. I like the sound of that. I’m also real bullish on these new Wonder Comic’s releases.

Most Looking Forward to Reading Indie

I love noir crime comics and this seems to have it ten fold. It sounds like a title Rick Remender and Sean Phillips would be the creative team on. But this is from Lion Forge and we have Palle Schmidt and I’m intrigued to say the least.

This book celebrates not only the anniversary of Ghostbusters but kicks off a Ghostbusters resurgence with the planned Ghostbusters / Transformers series and new Ghostbusters movie in the works. I think the Incentive will be sought after. It may be time to start grabbing uber cheap Ghostbusters Incentives.

Cover Art

I pre-ordered this book two months ago prior to the buzz of this issue and it was for one reason only, the gorgeous cover by Alex Ross! I want this as a framed poster in my home office.

I really was leaning Immortal Hulk the whole time but I feel like while I love #16, I love them all. This Parel Skywalker cover is outstanding and feels cinematic. Both regular price variants are great grabs for what is worth too with a JTC Leia Action Figure Variant and a Granov Greatest Moments.

Regular Price Variant Marvel

Deadpool riding a unicorn, holding mjolnir, and a rainbow bridge background??? Take my money already!

There is 2 billion War of Realms Variants (cover art wise I like Copiel’s) so it's tough for one to stick out. Not my favorite art but I like this one because not every store will qualify since most stores still haven't jumped on the midnight party train. I try to grab cover price party variants when I can.

Regular Price Variant DC

It’s really a crap week for DC comics in general. Normally I wouldn’t pick the same title twice in this article but I love this story and the cover B variant from Francesco Mattina is hands down my favorite this week. Yes, even better than Lucio Parillo’s Green Lantern cover.

In the words of the great Lee Corso NOT SO FAST. Better than Green Lantern? I'm not buying it. Full disclosure, I like both covers. But This finale to the Green Lantern arc sounds interesting with GL tasked with killing Adam Strange. Plus at this point I've seen these deathstroke covers and am ready for some great Green Lantern art. Parillo killed this one.

Regular Price Variant Indie

Dynamite is no stranger to having multiple variants but it’s nice to see only one Christian Ward variant instead of a trade dress and a virgin variant or sketch variant. Christian Ward is a master at using bright colors and this cover pops. As popular as Conan is becoming for Marvel, could we see a resurgence in popularity of Red Sonja soon as well?

This is THE hottest Indy book running. It's only a matter of time before someone options this book. The first 4 issues have sold extremely well and I expect this book to continue the trend. I usually wait for trades but this one I started early and am now reading monthly.

Incentive Variant

A 1:25 variant for a book won’t have a very high print run. The only downside is this art was previously used for a Lady Death kickstarter.

Don't try to get all fancy here Brian. The clear pick is the big boy book of the week. Yes its controversial. Yes your LCS will probably mark it up. But for those of you whose LCS sells at ratio….cha ching! As far as amazing cover art goes, I also love the Dell Otto War of Realms Variant but suspect there is little spec there.

Top Spec Pick

This book is already sold out at a lot of online retailers. I could see this book getting hot in the short term but will be anxious to see how it plays out a few months from now. Kind of like Dark Horse’s Lady Killer in 2015.

I don’t see too many stores going 50 copies deep on this. With Ms. Marvel front and center and popular characters like Spider Gwen, Rocket Racoon, and Deadpool (among others) in the background, this cover appeals to many fan bases.

Sleeper Pick

A lower print run title compared to other Marvel titles. Absolutely gorgeous cover by a popular artist with a popular character. This could be a cover that may not be sought out on release day but down the road could pick up steam in my opinion.

I know to say this is a sleeper seems like a reach. But many people sleep on Liefeld at this point. I know I am a fan but I genuinely feel like the time could be right for a Liefeld comeback with Marvel. I have high hopes for this series. If it pops, this variant should as well.

Last Week Look Back

Winner: #TeamBolo by a nose

This week was tough to judge. Both had Hot 10 entries and but with a 2 to 1 outcome and Marvel Rising still well rising it's Mr. Bolo by a nose.

Winners: (In No Order)

  • Marvel Rising 1:25 (Bolo) - Hot 10 entry and going for 4x ratio.
  • Age of X Man X tremists #2 Frison (Simpleman) - Another Hot 10 entry that was popping well over ratio almost right out the gate
  • Neon Future (Bolo) -  There was real demand for the Steve Aoki Indy comic release to tie into his concept album.  This book also made the Hot 10
  • Sierra Muerte #2 1:10 (Bolo)- Currently hitting 2x ratio.  Not sure if the demand will remain with this one though
  • Detective Comics #1000 (Both)- This was a big win for comics fans.  Such a fun and monumental moment in Batman lore.

Losers: (In No Order)

  • Marvel Regular Priced Variants (Both)- We talk about this week but Marvel Cover B’s are continuing to prove to be a tough profit maker in the short term. When will we stop buying these lol. I expect this weeks JSC cover to trip up a lot of speculators.  I hope I am wrong.
  • Sharkey The Bounty Hunter #2 Skottie Young (Bolo) - One sale this week in the US on ebay…….ONE SALE.

Jury Is Still Out

  • Savage Shores #1 B & W (Bolo)- selling for a few dollars over cover price and drying up
  • Street Fighter Menat #1 Udon Exclusive (Simpleman)- Haven't seen these really hit eBay yet so still too early to determine.
  • Ice Cream Man #11 Tarr Variant (Simpleman)- Four sold and only four available on eBay.
  • Shazam #4 Lee Variant (Bolo)- Underperformed but could increase interest after the movie hits this upcoming weekend
  • Most books released last week- It's hard to call a lot of books losers after just one week. Let us know in the comments what books you think the jury still out on!

We did pretty well this week making something out of slow week. Be sure to let us know in the comments your picks and predict who will win out #TeamSimpleman or #TeamBolo.

I was fine with the old format but I do enjoying having two opinions instead of just one in the old format…Regardless of format this is the article that keeps me coming back to the site, great work guys!

    • Avatar

You already get those same opinions(just not as in depth) with simplemans Monday YouTube and the Bolo on Wed morning.

    • Avatar

Thank you very much for your support! We will continue to work tirelessly to deliver the highest quality content on the site and across all platforms. Thank you for joining us every Wednesday!

      • Sdalton

Thank you guys for forging ahead and trying something new. Why would you want to simply mimic what Adam did? You can’t reproduce someone else’s style. I read the Wednesday One and BOLO list every week, and though I don’t usually catch it on Thursday night, I listen to the BOLO list breakdown every week – that has become my favorite feature! Keep up the great work!

  • Avatar

i vote for old format. top 10 is my favorite also

  • Avatar

I agree. I prefer the old method. I”m starting to skip these because its not as easy to read…

  • Avatar

I am going to have to pile on and agree. I used to look forward to reading the Wednesday One each week, but now It is an after thought. Just do not know why you guys needed to reinvent the wheel on something that was already great. Kinda like the DCU.

    • Avatar

The writer left due to his real life circumstances beyond comic books. We support him and his decision as our brother in spec. . No reinvention. Just growth and change that is natural for any business. And for the record, no you don’t HAVE to pile on. You choose to.

  • Avatar

I also agree (TMI), and whats the point of a Wednesday One If it comes out after the shops have opened? Same with the BOLO list. I still love the articles and think you guys do a great job but the new W1 is a bit of a let down.

  • Avatar

Old format please. Thanks for trying something different, but there doesn’t seem to be as much positive feedback or support in continuing this format. Maybe start a Poll?

Especially if the new format causes the articles to come out Later.

Love the Bolo and top 10 articles.

    • Avatar

I’m sorry, no writer for CBSI will ever have to have their content decided by anyone other than themselves and the owners of CBSI. That’s a dangerous precedent and to be frank, the comment section is a terrible place to judge the popularity of a column. We have other metrics for that. We also are expanding our audience daily the site brings in new readers who have never read the old column. It’s time to move on. Steins Hot 10 is Steins Hot 10. Indie spotlight is all Andy etc. This will not be a column by committee.

  • Ilovecomicbooks

I agreed with everyone here. The old format was way better and I know it was a lot of work to put in. Perhaps the writers can take turn. One week this writer does it and next week another does it. Just some ideas.

  • Ben C

I will weigh in here and say that we have heard you about the time release and will be trying to get this out to our readers on Tuesday night as we move forward.

As for old format vs new format, Adam L did a HELL OF A JOB when he wrote The Wednesday One each week. No one will argue that. When Adam retired from his writing of TWO, the format shifted.

That said, for those looking for what is coming out each week, Brian from Simplemans Comics weekly picks video every MONDAY and Jack’s BOLO List are both great pieces of the Wednesday release puzzle.

I appreciate folks voicing their opinions, we certainly want to hear what people think and we take all these opinions into consideration as we navigate the speculation and investment waters.

  • Avatar

I have to add in that I too preferred the old format. I actually am not going to this site as much any more as a result, and am looking elsewhere for spec. I think you guys have a slight misunderstanding of what “The Wednesday One” should perhaps be- although it’s nice to hear what you want to read, that would be better suited for any other site or a personal blog. This is specifically a spec site. It would make no sense to have this article on Key Collector or CovrPrice, so it also makes little sense to have it here. If it’s too much work to do the old format, might I suggest just listing the top hottest spec for the week and calling it a day, cutting out the ones that will likely never make money. Adding to that that the time you guys obviously put into it makes it come out late in the day Weds, and I think you might want to reevaluate.

    • Avatar

We don’t run those sites or apps you mentioned. But we do run this site. And we know the audience we are reaching out to. CBSI is growing and evolving. The “clubhouse” is closed and we are open for anyone and everyone. This is, was, and always will be a spec and investing site. Doesnt mean we have to alienate everyone else or leave them out. Spec makes up a small segment of the community. Plus its Brian and my philosophy that readers ALSO can drive spec.

  • Avatar

Hey Jack…I’m probably the only one here but I like the new format…so keep up the good work! Much appreciated.

  • Avatar

I appreciate whatever information you guys chose to share. You do it without charging a fee. You put yourselves out there. Is the site perfect? I don’t know. But I take in all the free info I can get and make my own decision. Do whatever you feel is right. Make changes when you want. I’ll stick around for the ride for however long it lasts.

  • Avatar

The old article had much better info. That’s all we care about. We want you to tell us about the hot comics that are coming out for spec purposes, that’s why we come to this site. People don’t come here for your opinion on whether a comic is a good read, there are literally hundreds of other sites for that.

It’s also not a good look that the mods are coming on this comment section basically saying, “complain all you want but we’re not changing.” You guys need to listen to your readers or they will become readers of other websites and not this one.

    • Avatar

I have to agree with this, and this is probably the comment that most merits a response. It’s not about “disagreeing,” it’s extremely gouache and tacky for the writer to be contrary in the comments section. I have my own site and NEVER jump in in the comments, it should be a place for people to feel free to say what they want.

  • Ben C

“You guys need to listen to your readers or they will become readers of other websites and not this one.”

I think that is a fair statement to make. I also think we are attempting to listen to our readers.

I might not have effectively expressed my opinion when I responded. I am the owner, not a mod.

Like I said, the opinions of folks matter to us, we hear your voices. We take everything into consideration and we go from there.

It seems folks are asking for things that already are present on this site. That and the time of posting. All of these things can easily be addressed.

The being live by Tuesday night, we have heard loud and clear and have every intention of addressing that for our readers.

For those who are looking for “hot books to watch out for” I urge you to take a look at Simpleman’s Weekly Picks video as well as Jack’s BOLO List.

We will continue to listen to our readers and hopefully improve the site as we have done for the last year since I took over.

Thanks to all who took the time to voice their opinions and conerns and thanks to Brian and Jack for taking time out of their week to offer up some insight and content for the site.

    • Avatar

I should have said writer not mod and really I should of just said Jack DeMayo but I didn’t want to be rude and call him out by name.

I like this site a lot and I think that everyone who commented here does. We care enough to try to help you guys realize that this format isn’t working. Maybe we’re all wrong and this new format gets more views than the old one, but I doubt it. My advice is to listen to your audience.

    • Avatar

Honestly, simplemans comic spec on mondays has always been my go to for picking up spec comics more so than the W1. I really enjoy the new format for the W1. Keep up the great content!

      • Avatar

Or just transcribing the videos and putting that out would be better than taking the time to write up what you guys are for Wednesday One as it stands.

  • Avatar

I think the solution here is simple just retire the name of the column. If you don’t want to copy Adam great but then you use the name of the article that people associate with him and his style. If your want to change it as much as you have that’s fine, but go all the way call it Wednesday Debates or Versus or whatever will work with the new format that your moving to. Then you can point them to the BOLO or the videos for those looking for something similar to the old setup.

  • A. J. Diesel

Everyone, isn’t something better than nothing? The authors VOLUNTEER time to give us all something to read. Some things work for some and some work for others. I have nothing but respect for every writer that volunteers his/her personal time, so that we get to escape for a few minutes and read about things we enjoy. I support the article Jack! Keep up the good work!

    • Avatar

      Well said diesel!

    • Avatar

The answer is, it’s their choice, but we’re just not clicking on it, so there seems little point. I have purposely not named other sites that are doing what the guys are not, but that’s where I’m going instead of here as there’s just no Tuesday night spec article.

  • Avatar

It is always a fine line to criticize content that is given for free. I don’t think any one doesn’t appreciate the work that goes into this, but regardless, there is something to be said if the new format isn’t working and drives people away. I have stopped reading this article as well because it doesn’t provide much help spec wise. I only clicked on it seeing all of the comments so I was hoping for a discussion of what was hot from Wednesday. I appreciate the choice to honor the previous version, but as people have mentioned, we come for the spec. And there are certainly still great options CBSI provides, but I think this format should be evaluated for long term viability and whether it truly contributes to the growth of the site (given some of the opinions expressed).

  • Ben C

I have read and heard all the opinions, thoughts and criticism and appreciate all of you who take the time to make your opinion heard.

We will certainly discuss these concerns and implement what we can in an attempt to continue to bring you the best content around.

Thanks to all who weighed in here.

  • Avatar

So back to spec talk….how many shop variants if immortal hulk 16 2ND PRINT are there going to when the madness settles? WTH?

  • Avatar

Guys, if I were you I would start taking SERIOUS notice that 95% of the replies seem to be critical and a thumbs down to the new format. There must be something to it I think.
Maybe keep the new format as a separate article or column and bring back the previous format once again as “The Wednesday One”.
I think it’s time to swallow your pride, and admit the new format doesn’t work for most people as “The Wednesday One”
Also, seriously, posting “The Wednesday One” AFTER LCS’s have opened totally beats the purpose. It’s supposed to come out Tuesday night so people can research, do their homework and plan what they’re getting the night before, not after they already went.
It seems like you’re trying to do your readers a disservice or purpose and that’s really silly. Someone will sooner or later pick up the slack and give people the content they seek and readers will go elsewhere, Why would you want that? I’d seriously reconsider the format change and time of posting.

    • Ben C

Its been stated 3 times before you chimed in that we are on the posting time and trying to address it. If you want to jump on the bandwagon, at least read the previous posts you claim to reference…

As far as attempting to do our readers a disservice, lol, I have tried to respond with logic and clear intention, it becomes a lot harder to do so when I have to respond to comments like this…

Appreciate you echoing what others have said and I will say the same thing I have said. We hear and appreciate the comments. All opinions are taken into consideration. The time will be fixed, we understand that.

Seeing the uproar about the title is something we will discuss as well.

      Thanks for the feedback.

  • Dell18

Tuesday Night would be awesome. I don’t mind the format. If it’s out Tuesday night, the more books to look into the better. Adam was killer at nailing what might be hot, so that’s hard to replicate. I couldn’t do as good as him either. I check a couple other sites and still save TWO as the best for last. Keep evolving and growing. It hasn’t been around long enough for you guys to hit your stride anyway.

  • Foxom

Monday would be even better. My lcs will pull stuff until midday Tuesday lol

  • sdalton32

Thank you guys for forging ahead and trying something new. Why would you want to simply mimic what Adam did? You can’t reproduce someone else’s style. I read the Wednesday One and BOLO list every week, and though I don’t usually catch it on Thursday night, I listen to the BOLO list breakdown every week – that has become my favorite feature!
