Covering the Spread 44: Surprise, Surprise

Hello again comic book investors and welcome back to Covering The Spread!  This week I wanted to focus on a few things that are surprising me in the market right now, and might be a surprise to you too.  So with that flimsy premise, let's take a look at some books!

X-Force 11

This was a book that really surprised me this week.  I have been picking this out of bins for years just because it was an early Deadpool appearance without even realizing this this was the first “true” Domino.  But that is old news by this point, what really surprised me were the sales.  In the past week alone 34 slabs have sold on eBay.  That's a lot of heat for a book that I don't really see people talking about much.  It's only 4 sales behind Umbrella Academy FCBD and I still see people talking about that constantly.

I'm not sure if this is because Marvel has been pushing out a solo title for her, or if it's speculation on future Deadpool movies.  Either way this could be a sign of an upward trend about to begin.  With that in mind let's take a look at the numbers.

Average Raw Price 16.49
10 Copies 164.87
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 180
Selling Fees 54.10
Total Costs 498.97

9.8 Av Price 9.6 Av Price 9.4 Av Price 9.2  Price
97 51 41 30
2 Copies 3 Copies 4 Copies 1 Copy Total Value
194 153 164 30 541

Well these aren't the most inspiring numbers in the world…yet.  Prices over the last few month are down on slabs overall, but higher demand will eventually mean higher prices.  As long as the demand keeps up anyway.

As of now our upfront investment looks like $444.87 and our profits would be $42.03.  That's a spread of +4.20 and an ROI of about 9.5% Not huge profits but it is something.  The other thing this book has going for it is that you could probably find it in back issue bins across the country, so your actual price for raws is probably lower.

Amazing Spider-Man 4

This is a book that I sold all of my copies of shortly after the initial hype.  I thought for sure this book would crash and burn because of Sony's track record with Spider-Man movies.  But, between Venom and Into the Spider-Verse my opinion has changed.  Of course there's always a chance things go back to the norm and they mess it all up again.

Average Raw Price 41.13
10 Copies 411.25
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 180
Selling Fees 79.80
Total Costs 771.06

9.8 Av Price 9.6 Av Price 9.4 Av Price 9.2  Price
126 68 70 62
2 Copies 3 Copies 4 Copies 1 Copy Total Value
252 204 280 62 798

Again not exciting numbers.  Our upfront costs sit at $691.26 and our profits would be $26.94.  That's a spread of +2.69 and a measly ROI of just under 4%.  I don't think graded copies are overpriced at the moment but people are vastly overpaying for raw copies in my opinion.  This book is not scarce at all so if you want a copy I suggest grabbing a slab.

Amazing Spider-Man 301

2 Spider-Man books in one week?  Well yeah I can't have people thinking Spidey is a bad investment!  This is absolutely an iconic issue that I don't think gets enough attention.  So what's surprising about this issue?  The price of 9.8 copies.  If you aren't aware already I'm sure you'll be surprised too.

With Pressing:

Average Raw Price 36.67
10 Copies 366.74
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 180
Pressing Fees (EST) 120
Selling Fees 568.80
Total Costs 1335.54

9.8 Av Price 9.6 Av Price 9.4 Av Price
1576 154 95
3 Copies 5 Copies 2 Copies Total Value:
4728 770 190 5688

I just wanted to cut to the chase here so I've including pressing here and anyone submitting this book should too.  That would put our upfront investment at $766.74 and our profits at $4352.46!  That's a spread of +435.25 and an ROI of 567%.  I don't think I'll ever be able to top that number.

This is why I said people are overpaying for raw copies of ASM 4.  Auctions were ending at $50 and you can buy raw copies of this book around $40.  Now obviously this book is tough to get in a 9.8 and that's why the premium is so high.  But you can't tell me it's not worth a shot.  Even if you can only get one copy to grade a 9.8 you're in the money!

Wrap-Up

Well everyone that's all I have for you this week!  Did any of these surprise you too?  Am I crazy for thinking there's still ASM 301s in high grade floating around out there?  Let me know down in the comments below!  Thank you as always to the Comic Collateral app for our pricing data.  See you in a week!
