1 Here's Negan #NN

WRITER: Robert Kirkman
ARTIST: Charlie Adlard
Ouch!! This one hurts.  Back in 2017, there were many 9.8 sales in the $500 range.  Today, expect to pay around $175 with a low of $120.  Raw copies were around $350 back then as well, now, less than $100.

Remember a couple years ago when 9.8’s sold for $400-500?  Yeah, me neither. If you wanted one then, now is the time to buy as you should be able to find one for just slightly above $100.

This is still a gorgeous cover, but it has definitely fallen on hard times re-selling wise.  Last year 9.8's were very smoothly selling in the $175-200 range and now those same books in grade are less than $100.

Massive hype for this film that releases this week!  Despite that fact, the dozens and dozens of $600+ 9.8 sales last September and October are long gone.  Now you can pick up a 9.8 copy for less than $400.

Oh Black Mask…how did you screw this one up so badly.  Loved the story, but Black Mask butchered the early success.  9.8’s used to be $200+ and you can now get one for around $50-60 and raw for around $20.

The 1st appearance of Crown was on fire back around Halloween because of the Morbius movie and this one popped up to $20-30.  It has since crashed back to $10 or less.  (Remember that villain spec is a dicey prospect at best!)

After being a pretty consistent seller in the $300 range for several years in 9.8 grade and $200+ in 9.6 grade, the price has dropped off quite a bit and you can pick it up for $175/100 in those same grades now.

After hovering around $300 for a 9.8 copy last year, this book has lost about a third of its value to less than $200.  Raw copies have dipped below $100.

Amazing Fantasy #15

WRITER: Stan Lee
ARTIST: Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby (cover)
Wait, what?  You are an idiot Ben!  No way this is on the Not 10 list!!!  7.5 = $120k, down from $140k last year; 5.5=$48k, down from $58k last year.  It doesn't mean that it isn't still THE Silver Age book to have, it just means that realized sales are down from the astronomical highs that had been set over the past couple years.

Completely predictable for Avenging #9, and it’s still too high. It’s in no way a scarce book. It’s enough of a key that it should have some value, but nothing like it does/did.

Now is the time to buy Crown’s first.

Spider-Man noir variant still sells consistently over $100 in 9.8 (avg seems around 130). But didn’t realize it had fallen that far below $200. Eventually it’ll have its own ongoing series or spin off movie/animated series. Only a matter of time, but likely will be a while.

I have been waiting for here’s Negan to drop. Hoping it drops more into the price range I want it at

It’s refreshing to see articles like this. You always hear those success stories and about the guy who used his last quarter to hit a jackpot in Vegas and always coming home a winner. It’s more educational to read about the rise and fall of formerly hot books than just read about the heat, neglecting the cool down and aftermath. Great Read and Retrospective !!!

Great point on the AF 15.

Hulk 1 did that a couple years back, it jumped too fast and had to come back a bit.

Really enjoy these lists and the explanations given, great job Stein!

You can find copies of AS9 under $400? There’s not a single AS9 9.8 that’s sold on Ebay for less than $425 in the past 60 days. I won’t argue it’s dropped, but it’s still readily fetching $450+.

    • Ben Steiniger

Per GPA, 2 separate copies sold this week for $380 and 2 other copies sold for $425 & $435. Even at the $425 price point, the drop in value is massive.

You could easily have about five or more Adam Hughes books on here- Dirty Pair 1, Captain Marvel 1 (2014), and Thor 700 among them. All his stuff is pretty much down across the board (possible exception, LOSH 23).

Finally! I’ve been waiting for an excuse to pitch the idea of buying an AF 15 to the wife. “It’s a good conversation starter” just didn’t seem like enough. Wish me luck.

I picked up an Avenging Spidey 9 this week in NM for a pretty good price, because the movie is coming next week. Was this the right time? Or should I have waited, ie, will it plummet after the movie comes out or maintain its current demand?

    Love this article!

I still find it amazing how Pizzolo/Black Mask squandered their entire publishing arm into not much more than a marginalized “hashtag”. The last time I talked to him was 2016 and he was apparently far too excited about all the multi media news they had coming. They tried too hard to stay relevant, leaning far too much into the politics of the last couple years instead of just making good comics. WCNGH, 4 Kids, and Young Terrorists should have all been not only optioned by now, but in production. Crazy.
