WRITER: Nicole Perlman ARTIST: Marco Checchetto
This book kept rising and rising, all the way up to $900 back in December for a 9.8, then copy-gate happened. The last 2 9.8's have sold this month for just $410.
WRITER: Robert Kirkman ARTIST: Charlie Adlard
Yikes…in the winter of 2015, 9.8's had risen all the way up to $350. They have since slowly declined so far that you can now get one in a 9.8 for $50 or less.
WRITER: Matt Fraction ARTIST: Salvador Larroca
The price skyrocketed last fall up to $300 for a 9.8. The price has now fallen down to $125 for the same 9.8.
WRITER: Stan Lee ARTIST: Jack Kirby
Prices ballooned to all time highs back in 2014-2015. Now this isn't an easy sell at half those values with CGC 6.0's sitting around $300.
WRITER: Jacob Chabot ARTIST: David Baldeon
After multiple sales for 9.8's over $1200, this one crashed back to earth and you can now get it for less than $500. 9.6's and raws have been hit too as you can pick those up for $200 or less.
WRITER: Scott Snyder ARTIST: Greg Capullo
This was an easy, very liquid $250 for a long time in 9.8 grade. The price is down to half of that and you can get a CGC 9.6 for less than $50.
WRITER: Dan Slott ARTIST: Stuart Immonen
Remember when warnings were given about Red Goblin? Remember when 9.8's of this book commanded $500? That was just last spring. You can now get a 9.8 for less than $200.
WRITER: Gerry Duggan ARTIST: Aaron Kuder
9.8's were selling consistently in the $150-175 range last summer. Unknown Comics all of a sudden started selling the previously ‘sold out' issue and prices plummeted. Picking up a 9.8 for as little as $40-50 is now possible.
WRITER: Scott McCloud ARTIST: Bret Blevins
Livewire was supposed to be the next Harley Quinn. While she may still be primed for greatness, it hasn't happened and investors jumped ship. 9.8's had peaked around $300 and you can now get one for around $100.
WRITER: Trent Luther and Brian Ball ARTIST: Luigi Teruel
After all the dust has settled, this book that hit highs around $500 just 2 months ago is now just about a $50-60 book.
This one was gaining consistently up to around $3000 for 9.8's. Then the series went on hiatus and it has decreased all the way down to $2000. Strangely, the regular issue has stayed pretty consistent for the past year around $350 for 9.8's.
WRITER: Roy Thomas ARTIST: Howard Chaykin
I don't know if it is just the sheer volume of copies available or what, but 9.8's had been around the $1500 mark for several years but have now slipped down to around $800.
Well I assume he’s using hard data from an analysis tools like GPA and to be honest it’s not truly possible to track the sales data of raw books with real accuracy because conditions are highly subjective and there are too many avenues of sale. Even if you pour a lot of research into recent eBay sales the best you’d probably come down with is a broad price range and that would be only for the eBay market. Giving the relative value of a 9.6 is likely a more accurate measure overall.
Besides that with the exception of maybe more modern or overprinted books a CGC 9.6 is generally going to resell a little better than a raw copy that has been subjectively labeled by the seller as “Near mint”.
The current market is wide reaching too with many types of buyers. There are collectors who never buy anything graded just as there are people collect graded books but may not be able to always afford the highest on census. The ebb and flow of a book’s value will change regardless.
I remember last year when Moon Girl #28 with the 1st appearance of Omnipotentis (who??) was all the rage because of its low print run. CGC 9.8 copies were selling for well above $200. Now, you can’t even sell those for $70.
GREAT JOB STEIN…love this take on the market!!!!!!!!!!
All I see is BUYING OPPORTUNITIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m still holding 3 of those books on your main list, and 1 on the honorable mention list, and going BARGAIN SHOPPING for the rest!!!!!!!!!
Hint…EBBS & FLOWS PEOPLE, ebbs and flows……
I did. I wrote a Not 10 back in April 2017…and then never followed back up. There appears to be demand so it will be an ongoing monthly column moving forward.
Excellent article! I’ve been looking for a 9.8 CGC Superman Adventures #5 for a while, but ot always seem to get away from me. Maybe now I’ll be able to get one for around $100. 🙂
What’s copy-gate?
The cover artist, Francesco Mattina, was caught copying other, lesser-known artists.
Awesome spin topic!
Nice write up on the other side of speculating Ben S.
Just waiting for Matt D. to drop the weekly “Weekend after Wednesday”.
Been waiting for new posts from the Topic, Thank You!!!
This is great, wish this was a weekly round-up or even monthly.
This is going to be a monthly list going forward.
👍👍🤘🤘🙌🙌🏆🏆
Nice! This is a great column idea
yes!
A lot of these comics are still in demand.. just not hotcakes hot
Can’t wait to see you accused of trying to tank the market on these books so you can grab up all the copies for yourself, Ben! Nice work as always!
This is GREAT. Not for dumping on falling books but for letting fans know some previous comets are now attainable. Thanks.
Love this Stein, awesome job. I still have hope for the Saga RRP!!
But who collects 9.6s? I understand raw copies and of course 9.8s but 9.6 were mentioned several times 🤔

Well, I couldn’t have said it better. Thank you!
And as an aside, I only mentioned 9.6’s twice and that was after mentioning 9.8 sales data.
I have a lot of 9.6s of key Batman and Detective Comics issues. I also have a lot of 9.6 signature series.
Ideally we would all love our slabs to be all 9.8’s, but realistically, that’s not always possible.
I have a few 9.6 slabs because I cannot afford 9.8’s of those same books.
So in short, a lot of people collect 9.6 slabs.
This is great. Hell, I had a Star Wars 1 9.8 that I sold for $400 before the new movies broke.

Great article! Hope we can see more of it!
I have none of these books but I do want the Superman adventures 5. Guess the time to buy is now
I feel like you guys tried this once before? Maybe I dreamed it. Either way, this needs to be regular. Love it!

Dope concept! Capitalizing on the success of a the hot 10 is smart.
Definitely the time to buy FF 45. I truly believe it will see gains once again.
Awesome article. Glad to see it’ll be monthly.
Haha I knew Rags would drop like a stone. Sorry to those that list any cash on it , not trying to be a dick just am happy I was right.
Glad Star Wars #1 is slipping, I need a decent copy to complete my run of the first 10 issues.
