Dollar Bin Digging 20

Amazing Spider-Man #345

You can typically find a good chunk of Erik Larsen’s ASM run in the dollar bins. Sure most of the time it’s the Return of the Sinister Six 6-parter from 334-339, but you can sometimes score a gem like this one. This is the issue where Cletus Kasady becomes infected with the Carnage symbiote following his cell mate Eddie Brock’s escape from prison.

Granted all of these “early” Venom issues are in demand, but sometimes this one gets passed by because Venom is not front and center on the cover like he is on issues 346 and 347. While Larsen gave us the sweet cover, this was Mark Bagley’s first shot at ASM Interiors.

Don't Feel Like Digging?

Spectacular Spider-Man #1 (Vol. 2)

As difficult as it may be to find ASM #345 in the bins, this next one is conversely that easy. Sticking with the whole Spider-Man and Venom theme, this is just a fun cover by Humberto Ramos.

Ramos is now splitting art duties with Ryan Ottley on the current Amazing Spider-Man series; but back in 2003, he was working with Paul Jenkins on this Spectacular run.

These books are so cheap and easy to find I couldn’t even find usable single issue sales data. Most appear to sell in cheap lots or runs. But for the art alone this is worth a buck to me.

Recent High Sales Data:

CGC 9.8 – $55.00 on 11/20/18
Raw complete run of issues #1-27 –
$29.99 on 1/3/19
Raw 6 copy lot of issue #1 –
$2.25 on 11/18/18

So until next time, remember while you dig that…

That Spectacular Spider-Man #1 has a Montreal Con variant that is a virgin with a back cover sketch area. Not dollar bin stuff though.

I didn’t even know that Con variant existed. Good info. Thanks for sharing.

Cheapest is $30 for a pair of Fine copies, but most are in the $75+ range, and graded copies of that one are a couple hundred. Also seem to be error copies that don’t have the Convention Stamp from what I gather. Very interesting.

That’s def not a dollar bin book. Unless you live in Canada, you never know what may sneak into a bin.

There are actually 2 Montreal Con variants. The Virgin with a foil label, then a rarer full Virgin that is an error. Luckily got both from my LCS for $10.
