The Weekend After Wednesday for 1/19/19

Want to know which books from Wednesday’s new deliveries are already heating up and which ones are cooling? Here’s a “Weekend After” list that we hope will help! This isn’t a reflection on the quality, collectability or long term potential of recently released books. This is based on today’s market price for books that came out on Wednesday, 1/16/19. They could still be at your shop.

APPALACHIAN APOCALYPSE #1 (CAVE PICTURES PUBLISHING) – A copy is listed for $2,499 if you feel really confident that this could double the current value of WALKING DEAD.  I doubt it. With that said, this is selling for $13 to $16.

CATWOMAN #7 OLIVER B VARIANT (DC) This gorgeous Ben Oliver variant was heating up earlier this week and was creeping up to $20 shipped, until the market flooded and brought it back down to $10 shipped.   There are a ton of copies listed, so prices will be heading back to cover price.  For now, it’s still HOT.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #2 BROOKS 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL) – I love this cover. Mark Brooks is just awesome.  This is selling for $60 to $70 shipped.

MARVEL TALES VENOM #1 VIRGIN BARTEL 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL) – There has been only one sale at $100.  Current listed copies are going that way via auction as well.  Bartel brings a different energy to Venom then previous artists.  This could see some heat.

TMNT SHREDDER IN HELL #1 1:10 ALBUQUERQUE VARIANT (IDW) – It’s not often when a 1:10 hits as high as this is currently.  It’s selling for $65 to $80.  This is officially the hottest book of the week.  1:10 is obtainable, so go check your LCS!

UNCANNY X-MEN #10 FINCH VARIANT (MARVEL) – This Finch cover was impossible to find this week and now commands $30.  It’s a great classic Wolverine cover that should have long-term value.

WHITE WIDOW #1 (RED GIANT) – After a successful Kickstarter, we knew this was coming and yet it was very hard to find.  The Kickstarter has a lot of different variant covers.  Focusing on just the books released in stores, the standard “silver” cover sells for $25 to $35.  The Red Foil variant is selling for $25.  Both should have decent legs, as long as the Kickstarter exclusives don’t water down the value once those ship.

CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 (MARVEL) One week later, values are pretty much holding in line with last week's sales at ratio.  However, the 1:100 virgin variant saw a sale on Friday of $160.  So, this book might start seeing more price bumps.

FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #1 ARTGERM 1:100 VIRGIN VARIANT (MARVEL) This 1:100 variant took a bit of a hit over the week and dropped from $100 to its current $70.

GREEN ARROW #48 ADAMS B SKETCH VARIANT (DC) – What a difference a week makes.  Dropping from a height of $20 to now cover price… and some even selling for $1.

HARLEY QUINN #57 TEDESCO B VARIANT (DC) – This hot book from last week is STILL selling a ton of copies on eBay.  It’s actually seen a slight increase to $30 shipped.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN VENOM INC OMEGA #1 1:50 DELL’OTTO (MARVEL) – $100 last year and now selling at ratio for $50.

AVENGERS #676 BROOKS COVER A (MARVEL) – A year ago, this was selling between $18 to $20 shipped and today sells for $7 to $9 shipped.

CALL OF THE SUICIDE FOREST #1 (OF 5) (AMIGO) – Last year, this sold for $11-$15 shipped and now for less then cover price.

ICE CREAM MAN #1 (IMAGE) – Finally, a book that has increased one year later.   Both covers were selling for $15 shipped, or $26 for a set. EBay even flooded with copies, yet survived.  Granted, a content announcement for this helped shoot the value up to the current $40 to $60 for cover A and $35 to $40 for cover B.

TEETHER #1 (OF 4) (ANTARTIC) – Prices were averaging around $10 shipped for the standard cover and now sell below cover price.

BLACK HAMMER #1 DIRECTORS CUT (DARK HORSE) – There aren’t many copies listed nor sold.  But the last copy sold for $15.  I doubt the print run is large for this, so it could have some legs when content eventually releases.

TMNT IDW 2020 1:10 RODRIGUEZ VARIANT (IDW)The 1:10 Rodriguez variant did see one sale at $20 shipped and there are no other copies going that way.  So, WARM it is.

WONDER WOMAN #62 SCALERA B VARIANT (DC) – This cover is awesome and really stands out on the shelf.  The style felt familiar and it took me a few days to figure out why.  This feels very Frank Miller, but more controlled and cleaner.  It was hitting sales of $12 but has come down a bit to $8 shipped.

What’s with flying blonde chicks and orange cats?

One problem with the Batman Who Laughs as a subject for a cool cover is that potential for there is much versatility there. I was considering grabbing a copy, but then thought “well, it’s not bad, but any covers this character is on are basically going to look pretty similar”. I’m not sure there is really much mileage out of prominent metal spikes and a big grinning mouth. The fact that you can’t see any eyes is a big disadvantage in creating a compelling image of a character. Oh well

Yeah–the covers with him that I like the best so far are the “homages” to regular Batman covers. The upcoming unknown cover modeled after the Hush Poison Ivy cover is really cool.
