1 Spider-Women: Alpha #1 Stacy Lee 1:25 Variant

WRITER: Robbie Thompson
ARTIST: Vanessa Del Rey
Into the Spider-Verse is great.  The announcement of a spin-off with these 3 characters is causing a frenzy for this team-up book.  The regular cover is now a $25-30 book and this variant, for graded 9.8 copies, is now a $500 book–you could have been picked up in the summer for $100 or less.

2 Winter Soldier (Vol. 2) #1 Printer Error

WRITER: Kyle Higgins
ARTIST: Rod Reis
This one was on the Honorable Mention last week.  For those unaware, there are like 9 pages of Venom in the book instead of Winter Soldier.  Very few have popped up for sale since, indicating this might be fairly rare.  An auction ended this week for over $200.

3 Detective Comics #880

WRITER: Scott Snyder
This book should make all the ‘if there is no 1st appearance, it isn't a key', re-think their position.  A 9.8 sold for $900 this week.  Is this THE most sought after regular cover modern (2000-current) book?  Back in the summer when 9.8's were at $600, I thought that was the ceiling–again showing that no one can really predict the current market.

4 Black Panther (Vol. 5) #5

Noted as the 1st full appearance of Shuri as the Black Panther, people are apparently starting to notice.  Raw copies are now selling for $25-40.

5 Captain America (Vol. 5) #6 Winter Soldier Variant

WRITER: Ed Brubaker
ARTIST: Steve Epting
I call this the ultimate yo-yo book.  High prices, then low prices and back and forth.  Raws are again $80+ and 9.8's are over $250 again.

Making a return appearance to the Hot 10, I just apparently have not given this book enough credit.  Raw copies will now set you back $110 or more.

8 X-23 (Vol. 3) #7 Mike Deodato Variant

WRITER: Mariko Tamaki
ARTIST: Diego Olortegui
While not a big enough price increase to warrant a 2nd straight week at #1, there have been a TON of sales in the $35-45 range.  Even the regular cover is hitting $10+.

9 Darth Vader (Vol. 2) #25 Gabriele Dell'Otto 1:25 Variant

This one sold out at Midtown early so it is no surprise that the aftermarket price rose to the current $35-45 price point.

Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 5) #12 Adi Granov Variant

WRITER: Nick Spencer
ARTIST: Ryan Ottley
Sales are in the $8-10 range right now, but I could see this as one that just slowly rises over time.  Is this the best Galactus cover art ever?

Authentic Police Cases #7

WRITER: Various
ARTIST: Matt Baker (cover)
I hate to keep showcasing Matt Baker covers, but the sales are just there.  A CGC 8.0 sold last month for $1700 and a raw FN+ sold this week for $660 with a guide value for that grade around $200.

    Really digging that Granov.

Thanks for another great list Ben Stein!!

  • This is a really great list. I don’t have any of them this week, but that’s not the end of the world. I’m going to try and hunt down a copy of the Granov now so at least I’ll have one of the honerable mentions (fingers crossed).

Why is spider women alpha going so crazy? It’s not their 1st time appearing together nor is it the first cover to feature those 3 together. People think the movie will follow that story?

I don’t get it either tbh. If it were that important of an issue, why isn’t the JSC variant selling higher?

    • Only 2k of them out there (1:25 variant from a total print run of 50k). Drawn by Stacy Lee who also did the Marvel Rising variant.

    • If it’s not their first appearance together, or on a cover, then what comics do these occur.

      • Foxom

Amazing Spider-Man vol3 #9 is the 1st time they appear together in an issue. It’s also Spider-Gwen’s 2nd appearance! There is a sketch and a color variant of that issue with Silk, Spider-Gwen, and Spider-Woman surrounding Spider-Man. That’s either extremely lucky or the artist had a crystal ball!

        • Foxom

I forgot to credit Key Collector Comics for pointing that one out.

        • The differences between the book you mention and the one on the hot 10, is that one trio is from earth – 616 (Amazing Spider-man Vol. 3 #9) and the other is from earth – 65 (Spider-women: Alpha #1). Both are first appearances for the trio, the difference is the planet earth they live on.

    • I guess it has some 1st appearances (I might be wrong on this), which are:

      – 1st full appearance of S.I.L.K. (Earth – 65)
      – 1st appearance of Agent 77 (Jessica Drew of Earth – 65)
      – 1st appearance of Project Green (S.I.L.K. agent)
      – 1st appearance of Otto’s Octopus (Earth – 65)
      – 1st appearance of Agent Otto Octavius (Earth – 65)
      – 1st full appearance of Cindy Moon (Earth – 65)

Or maybe somebody knows someone, who knows someone, who knows what references they are planning on using for the next film.

    • I don’t read Spider-Man, but could it be their first time operating as a team?

It seems similar to Gotham City Sirens to me, because those characters appeared together frequently, Detective Comics -#850/GCS #1 is still seen as the first appearance of their “team”

  • Just like LB Cole covers. Baker’s are just as popular and impressive.

The Granov Galactus variant for Amazing Spider-Man is a nice companion piece to his Galactus cover for Hunger #1. Similar pose, but one is a closeup while the other is a long shot.

Most bizarre auction result of the week has to be for Swamp Thing #40 CGC 9.8 that ended on December 16.

  • No love for THe Batman Who Laughs One Shot (origin of TBWLs)? Been selling in the $25-$30 range lately. That wasn’t the easiest cover to find in 9.6/9.8 either.

  • No, that’s not the best Galactus cover ever (FF 49).

  • I scored 2 of those Darth Vader books for cover and both have sold. Also got that blue legend book at a local show for cheap. Do we know why that legend of blue marvel has jumped that high in price?

  • The copy I have of The Immortal Hulk #8 has 11 Dr.Strange page in it. A printer error just like that Winter Soldier #1. Anyone want it before I put it on Ebay?

  • I’m surprised no mention of Marvel Super Heroes 13 again. A 9.6 just broke wrapped at over $31k and a 9.4 ended over $12k. Those are significant increases on the top end of the market. I’d keep a close eye.

  • The Amazing Spider-Man 10 Dell’otto variant (first Spider-Punk) took off this week as well (thanks to Spider-verse) with 9.8’s going for $170 and then $200. If “Spider-verse” really does end up becoming a thing, I would expect that whole 6 book, aptly sub-titled “Spider-verse” connecting set, with (ASM 9-14) to be a very solid spec pick, even at today’s prices, with 9 and 10 being the solo standouts.

  • I was the seller of the Detective 880 CGC 9.8 that went for $900. I knew it would be a $1K book eventually and it’s almost there
