From Russia With Love
Greetings true believers, agent Newton here taking a break from the field. Today, I’m bringing you a story of mystery and international intrigue. I’m also hitting you with a trade secret right from the top.
I’ve heard it said that Germans love David Hasselhoff. I don’t know if that’s true, but I did hear he brought down the Berlin Wall. What I do know is…
Trade Secret #6: Russians love Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
How else could you explain a Russian paying me $40 for a TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: FUTURE TENSE TPB (purchase price $9.50) and on top of that paying $38 for eBay Global Shipping. Crazy, but true.
A month later I sold a super-nice copy of TMNT The Collected Movie Books TPB. It sports a sick TMNT #1 homage cover that is black and beautiful. I regret selling it for $30 even though it only cost me $7. The buyer strangely enough was another Russian. Two Turtle books to two different Russians. What are the chances? But, wait. The story doesn’t end there.
Last, but not least let me tell you about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TPB from Image comics. It collects the first five issues of Image’s 1996 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It’s out of print and hard to find. This one cost me, I kid you not, $1 at a flea market. I sold it for $49.99 to another dude in Russia!
How did I do it? There was no collusion. I swear!
To tell you the truth, I was getting a little worried myself. Was something nefarious going on. I checked my previous sales and they were all to different people in Russia. They all had positive feedback. The money showed up and stayed in my Paypal. So, no harm no foul.
Just to be sure, I reached out to a contact here in the states. He and his wife adopted several children from Russia and he has visited there many times. He also collects comics.
He informed me that in Russia, it’s hard to find authentic older comics and trades. You can find bootlegged copies, but the quality is usually poor and the stories aren’t always complete. Comic book fans in Russia are just like us. If they’re big enough fans they will pay what it takes to get what they want.
Keep your eyes open for the TPBs above. You will find buyers, even if they're not Russian.
That’s all for today, true believers. May your bin-digging and shelf-searching bring you success.
