Covering the Spread 16: Out With the Old

Hello again Comic Book Invest and welcome back to Covering the Spread!  I've written several articles at this point speculating about the future of the MCU, so what's one more?  On that note this will be your one and only spoiler warning for the article.  If you are somehow involved in Comic Book Speculation but haven't seen all the movies/don't keep up with the news you shouldn't read this article.

For everyone who listened to this week's Unpressable Defects, you heard about some people making a stink over a Cris Evans tweet.  Personally I don't think that tweet implies that he is done as Cap.  I do however think that he will be.  So we'll start there.

Captain America 34

For anyone who didn't already know Steve Rodgers is not the only person to go by Captain America in the comics.  In fact far from it.  In this issue we see Steve's childhood friend Bucky step into the role.  We've seen Bucky plenty in the MCU and we're going to see a lot more of him.  Sebastian Stan has stated in an interview that he has a huge 9 film contract with Marvel.

For those keeping score at home he has appeared in 4 so far (5 if you count Black Panther).  He also recently revealed that he does make an appearance in Avengers 4 but I think that will be a cameo at the end of the movie.  Regardless he will have plenty of time left on his contract to take over the role as Captain America.

The Numbers?

It's really not worth our time to delve too deep here.  This is much more speculative so I would say grab all the raw copies you can for under $10.  If you want to snag a 9.8 you can get them around $50 so if you've got money to burn sit on these for a couple years and I think you'll do well.

Captain America 25

Another spoiler alert: It's Sam Wilson.  As I mentioned before several people have stepped into the role as Captain America over the years and this time it was The Falcon.  Anthony Mackie has not publicly disclosed his contract with Marvel so this situation is a little more dicey.  Apparently the standard Marvel contract is for 6 films.

Mackie has appeared in 5 already meaning an appearance in Avengers 4 could round things out for him.  However when asked how many movies were on his contract he said “Like 50”.  That was years ago and perhaps at the time 6 films felt like an eternity of playing this character.

The Numbers?

This book is cheap.  Dirt cheap.  There's also a lot of variants so if you want to take a big swing grab the McNiven variant.  Personally I'll grab regular copies for a few bucks and tuck them away for a rainy day.

Amazing Fantasy 15

No, the other Amazing Fantasy 15.  Seriously they must've done that on purpose.  Anyways Mark Ruffalo has confirmed that his contract was for 6 films.  If his cameo in Iron Man 3 fulfills one of those, Avengers 4 will be his final appearance.  I don't think that's the case but that still only leaves 1 film left on his contract.  Just enough time to pass off the torch.

If you didn't know this is the first appearance of Amadeus Cho.  To be honest I don't know a lot about this character but I know Marvel seems very keen on pushing the diversity agenda.  At the moment Wong is the only Asian character in the series (does Mantis count?) so I wouldn't be surprise to see Cho.

Without Pressing:

2 Copies 3 Copies 4 Copies 1 Copy Total Value
455.84 343.50 370 64.50 1233.84

You guys didn't think I would leave you with no real breakdowns did you?  Anyways we have an upfront investment of $814.72 and would come away with a profit of $295.74.  That's an ROI of 36% and a spread of +29.57.  Not too shabby.

With Pressing:

Average Raw Price 53.47
10 Copies 534.72
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 180
Pressing Fees (EST) 120
Selling Fees 144.13
Total Costs 1078.84

9.8 Av Price 9.6 Av Price 9.4 Av Price
227.92 114.50 92.50
3 Copies 5 Copies 2 Copies Total Value:
683.76 572.50 185 1441.26

With the pressing we clock in at $934.71 in upfront costs and come away with $362.42 in profit.  That's an ROI of almost 39% just barely beating out the press free option.  Our spread lands at +36.24.  I don't know if Cho will make his way to the big screen but it seems like it's already a good investment.

Well everyone that's all I have for you this week.  I know it was only one full breakdown but I think the first two books have the potential to go from dollar bins to wall books really easily.  I hope you all enjoyed this weeks article and I'll see you soon!
