The Weekend After Wednesday for 10/13/18
Want to know which books from Wednesday’s new deliveries are already heating up and which ones are cooling? Here’s a “Weekend After” list that we hope will help! This isn’t a reflection on the quality, collectability or long-term potential of recently released books. This is based on today’s market price for books that came out on Wednesday, 10/10/2018. They could still be at your shop.
CURSED COMICS CAVALCADE #1 (DC) – This super hard to find DC book is selling for $20.
DREDD FINAL JUDGEMENT #1 (2000 AD) – Okay, wow, this is selling for $27/$30 shipped and prices are trending up. Oh, and it’s a Jock cover.
ELRIC WHITE WOLF #2 (TITAN) – Cover A and the variant for Elric are both selling for $12 shipped.
EXILES #9 1:25 RAHZZAH VARIANT (MARVEL) – My LCS laughed out loud when I asked if they had the 1:25 variant. They responded with “we don’t order anything even close to 25 copies of Exiles”. This was definitely a tough book to find out in the wild. This is commanding a steady $40.
STAR WARS SOLO ADAPTATION #1 (OF 7) 1:50 LUKE ROSS VARIANT (MARVEL) – The key song for the hot books this week is “we don’t order enough to get that variant”. I can’t imagine any store is ordering 50 copies of this title. SOLO underperformed in the box office, derailed a whole line of other SW films and the comics are severely over saturated. When you throw in a random 1:50 ratio for a book that no one’s paying attention, you have a HOT book. One seller has been selling multiple copies at $85 shipped and appears to own the market. One other seller sold a copy at $52. There’s only one copy left in an auction at $33 with 4 days left. I can see this increasing even more.
VENOM #7 SECRET VARIANT (MARVEL) – While stores hate them, I absolutely love secret variants. I enjoy the Easter egg hunt for these. Many people were asking, “What’s a good price to buy these at?” The answer is always cover price for secret variants. Never pay more (unless you REALLY want one for the PC). It also defeats the point of the whole secret variant when stores mark them up. With that said, this is selling for a consistent $17 shipped. Note: I also really like the Marvel Battle Lines variant.
WEATHERMAN #5 1:25 SOOK VARIANT (IMAGE)– These 1:25 variants are getting really hard to find now that we’re into the 5thissue. The market has responded and driven this up to a $40 book. There’s only one international copy currently listed. So, if you have one or saw one at your LCS, the market is yours right now.
LAST WEEK UPDATE
DEADPOOL #5 (MARVEL) – Always be mindful of “the flood” when you’re debating how many copies you want to buy. This book flooded hard. Over 250 copies sold over the past week. However, it goes to show you how much people like this cover. It did fall a bit from $17 shipped to $14 shipped. Personally, I think this is a great long-term hold.
DEAD RABBIT #1 1:10 JOHNSON VARIANT (IMAGE) – Still holding at $20 shipped.
DEATHSTROKE #36 (DC) – After settling to $15 shipped, this actually went up a bit to $20. It stayed there all week, until recently where it fell back to $15.
MOBSTER GRAVEYARD #1 (OF 5) (ANTARTIC) – This was selling for $20 last week and now $10 this week, with only a few sales.
NIGHTWING #50 MEYERS B VARIANT (DC)– One of my favorite covers of last week went from $12 to $10.
SPARROWHAWK #1 1:15 HANS VARIANT (BOOM!) – Some light flooding dragged last week’s $60 price to $40. The last copy sold was on the 11th, so sales have greatly slowed.
VENOM AMC OPENING WEEKEND GIVEAWAY – Prices have varied, but a NM copy sells for $14 and most other copies sell for $6 shipped (with some lots even going cheaper).
WONDER WOMAN & JL DARK WITCHING HOUR #1 FERERICI B VARIANT (DC) – Holding at $11 shipped.
HOT – THIS TIME 3 YEARS AGO
This time last year saw no HOT or WARM books. So, I went all the way back to my first article on the site, which started as a weekly post on G+ for 2 years before that. Time flies. So, on this 3 year anniversary, let’s look at the hot books 3 years ago:
CHEWBACCA #1 B&W 1:100 VARIANT – 3 years ago, this was selling for $100. Mix together STAR WARS fatigue + Alex Ross traditional price drops and you can now pick this up for $35.
SPIDER GWEN #1 1:25 BRADSHAW VARIANT – 3 years ago, this was selling for $30. Today, this is a $50/$60 book raw. This does appear to be drying up on eBay.
UNCANNY AVENGERS #1 CAMPBELL 1:50 VARIANT – Here’s a reminder that Campbell is not always a safe investment. 3 years ago this 1:50 was selling for about $50-$60. You can now get a copy for $25/$30 shipped.
TRANSFORMERS UNICRON #5 (OF 6) FRANCAVILLA 1:25 SOUNDWAVE VARIANT – For as popular as Soundwave is (he’s my favorite TF), there are very few variants featuring him. The best is Transformers #17 RI from 2011, which sells for about $50. This variant for UNICRON #5, featuring Soundwave, WILL go up. Stores are NOT ordering 25 copies of TF books anymore. My shop only orders 2 copies for their pull customers. That, along with him appearing in the latest BUMBLEBEE trailer, has me pretty confident in this book’s potential. It also helps that there’s only one copy left on eBay.
CATWOMAN #4 ARTGERM B VARIANT (DC) – I love Artgerm and this cover, but for some reason, I left it on the shelf.
DC FOILS (NON CONVENTION) (DC) – I'm putting all of these in one lump here. None of these are selling for over cover price. It’s also worth noting that most copies are REALLY hard to find in high-grade. I will admit that I did pick up the foil for Supergirl #23. The blue eyes really pop in person on that cover.
SPIDER-GEDDON #1 (OF 5) (MARVEL) – There were a lot of open-order variants for this book. I ended just grabbing the connecting variant to build a set. The Phillip Tan KRS store variants are pretty awesome.
WHAT IF? PUNISHER #1 (MARVEL) – I honestly forgot about this book. It did see that one sale went for $11 shipped. However, plenty are available for less then cover price.
X-MEN BLACK MOJO #1 1:100 MOJO CAMPBELL VARIANT (MARVEL) – This can be had for as low as $40. One NM copy sold for $10 shipped. That’s brutal. I guess Mojo isn’t sexy enough to move a variant.
