The Reading Pile #13

The Reading Pile

Lucky number 13, y'all! With this issue, I'm going to kick your…errr…hopefully this will be a really fun rapid fire edition of The Reading Pile!

Heroes in Crisis, DC Comics, 9/26/2018
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Clay Mann

This was pretty good and I think folks liked it, generally. People seem to prefer when Harley is written as a psychopath and her fight with Booster Gold drove most of this story forward, along with the mysterious deaths that Bats, Supes and Wonder Woman were dealing with. The pages with these types of panels, see below, were like filler I didn’t like, but whatever. Really liked the art and the totally unaffordable Mattina cover. This feels like it could be something really big, but I don't want to get my hopes up. 3.5/5

Doomsday Clock 7, DC Comics, 9/26/2018
Writer: Geoff Johns
Artist: Gary Frank

Loving this as it just looks and feels like the original Watchmen so much. I read this twice; I enjoyed it that much. Joker, Rorshach and Marionette interactions are particularly memorable. The Marionette character seems like it has to be some kind of play on a Harley Quinn character, but they don't seem to be going in that direction.
5/5

Thor 5, Marvel Comics, 9/19/2018
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Christian Ward

Why don’t I like this more??? Ugh, I love Thor and, until recently, I was loving Jason Aaron’s run on the title. This issue is just Thor conversing with Wolverine, fighting Old Man Phoenix “eons” in the future and then the introduction to the Doom mashup. Maybe I suck, but I found this a bit thoring. Ha! I crack myself up. This wasn’t horrible, but I wasn’t really feeling it either. Lovely cover. 3/5

Batman: Damned 1, DC Comics, 9/19/2018
Writer: Brian Azzarello
Artist: Lee Bermejo

Batwang drove prices on this book up, up, up in the secondary market. But people aren’t talking about the cool story and awesome art; I’m looking forward to the entire run. I wasn’t going to sell my copy but when median prices were above $70 on the Weekend after Wednesday, it had to go. I’ll buy the censored second print for my PC run. And about that, so much hoopla over the silhouette of “little Wayne.” So silly. 4/5

The Seeds 2, Dark Horse Comics, 9/19/2018
Writer: Ann Nocenti
Artist: David Aja

Is anyone reading this? I really liked the 1st issue, but this issue had panels that made me question my sanity and panels I absolutely loved. Weird to see a book so not talked about. It's only 4 issues, so I guess I am in until the end. 3.5/5

Wasn’t sure I was going to like this as Eric Powell is off art duties. I’m a lot less hesitant after the second issue, artist Simine Di Meo is more than able, but I’m not certain I like how our hero, Rondel, is being rendered.
Still, a color, science fiction tinged Hillbilly is not a bad thing at all. Plus, I love to read and say “wood booger.” 4/5

WWE: NXT Takeover – Into the Fire, BOOM! Studios, 9/19/2018
Writer: Dennis Hopeless
Artist: Hyeonjin Kim

So I have read Boom! Studios WWE comic adaptations, off and on, with my 12 year old nephew, since they started coming out and they are really good. No denying some of the fantastic variant covers either. I’m a huge fan of NXT and, especially, Asuka, on the cover above, so I picked this up as soon as I saw it. Just really fun stories and art. Recommended for WWE fans. 4/5

Black Hammer: Age of Doom 5, Dark Horse Comics, 9/19/2018
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Dean Ormston

This is, perhaps, my favorite comic book published today. I have showered it with praise before. The mystery of the farm has been revealed in this issue and it has me wondering if the book will continue to be as good. You know, the journey vs destination conundrum. A tad disappointed there weren’t any funny outbursts from Golden Gail in this issue, but she was feeling particularly murderous and traumatized by the issue’s events. 4.5/5

So is anyone interested in a The Reading Pile logo shirt? Was thinking of having some printed. No? Ok.

Let's end this with shout outs to all of the awesome CBSI gang out in Baltimore this weekend. It has been really fun seeing all of the photos and videos out on Instagram.

Great article once again Dan, Doomsday Clock is an awesome read, not yet read the new Hillbilly title didn’t realise it wasn’t Eric Powell’s interior art, but I can live with that as long as he does the cover art
Thanks for your time and effort and look forward to the next right up

Great job, again, Dan. A particularly well chosen group of reads, this week. I’m saving up on Doomsday Clock until it’s done and i can read it all at once. I’ll have to check out Black Hammer, soon.
