For DC I think Teen Titans #12 1st appearance of the batman who laughs. The book is selling from 30 to 50. With a new serie coming in the way and him getting evolved in several comics at a time. I Think he will be the new Harley Quinn. And the book raising in price very soon

Marvel is absolutely killing it with Stegman Cates and Venom. It’s kind of lame with the reboots and starting series back at one but it came at a good time giving the ability to draw in new and old customers with new storylines and compelling artwork.

While DC is has amazing art with their killer B’s the content is lacking imo.

My pick is Savage She Hulk #1. With the increasing roles of woman on the silver screen & peoples contracts coming to an end. She hulk is due for her role as a lawyer that gets justice for other superheroes. This book has been hard to find in high grade, also increasing more & more. Only a matter of time till it’s out of reach & people start paying outrageous low grade prices. Grey hulk is already coming, what’s left? She-hulk!! & then them turning Red. Who’s with me?

Ms. Marvel #1. It’s obviously already been heating up with all the movie news and photos, but I think the value will really jump once the trailer drops.

Anything Carnage before he shows up in the Venom movie.

Hulk 180….it has already been steadily increasing for awhile, and with the way 181 is surging, and becoming out of reach for a lot of people, theres no way theres not gonna be a ton of spillover interest in this book

All-star Comics #58 (first appearance of Power Girl) Even if you’re not a fan, I think this book is way under-valued. This is a book anyone can get in on at the moment

With the rise of the new Titans show and the possibility of the original 2003 Teen Titans cartoon coming back, (end credits of TTG movie), I reckon the Tales of The Teen Titans #44 is a safe bet.

Showcase #75 Might not be a bad pickup either with Hawk and Dove being on Titans.

Batman Adventures #12 market is a little hot on this one. But it will always be a key book. Prices are only. Going to go up. With another 5 Harley Quinn movies booked with Margot Robbie. Harley’s not going anywhere. BA12 is only going to go up.

All-New Wolverine #2 first appearance of Gabby Kinney (Honey Badger) is in my opinion a solid short term investment. Pick up any issue you can find for $20, slab it and resell for upwards of $150-200 depending on grade.

Amazing Spider-man 141 is on my spec list as well but time is running out on picking it up for cheap. If the Mysterio in the new Spidey flick turns out to be Danny Berkhart I’ll be one happy camper.

Conan the Barbarian #23. Movie Script is in the works. First appearance of Red Sonja could blow up, and be Marvel’s answer to DC’s Wonder Woman Films.

  • Avatar

Fantastic Four 48. It has doubled and shows no signs of slowing down and with new movies on the horizon it will only keep going up.

Venom #3 – 1st Knull. This character will stick around and they can do so much in terms of venom movies and incorporating into MCU in the future.

amazing spider man 210 first app of madam web. only a matter of time before she appears in movie form and the book is about 10 bucks or less. dirt cheap

  • Avatar

Avenging Spider-Man 9. The movie is going to make that jump even higher.

I still think a The New Mutants have lots of room to grow and a lot of great characters to introduce to the world, now if they’d just make a great movie.

I’m basing this totally on the question posed, specifically focusing on the “best investment/speculation pick at today’s market prices” therefore eliminating, in my mind comics that are already established with high price tags that I see as reliable blue-chip stocks, where I am basing my answer on a higher return on investment percentage and speculating on what I see as a “hidden gem” hoping to turn dollar bin trash into a key issue treasure. So, with that being said, my answer is Marvel Comics “GROOT #5” (November 2015) which is the 1st Full Appearance (where as “Groot #4” was a cameo of Baby Groot in the same spirit as Incredible Hulk #180 for Wolverine, limited to a nice full panel end page image). The “Why” is because despite Baby Groot from the Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 movie growing up to a teen at the end, I feel that the image of Baby Groot is very appealing to fans, girls/women love his cuteness and kids think he’s cool and adorable. With Marvel under Disney’s marketing machine, you know Baby Groot is perfect for merchandising and I speculate will have his own animated TV series in the future. As we all know in comics, things change all of the time and nothing is permanent, even death, so regardless of naysayers who proclaim Baby Groot is no more and is growing up, I still feel there is room in the Marvel Universe for this Baby Groot or another incarnation of the cute ‘lil sprout to become a mainstay. Right now that comic book, GROOT #5 can be found for under $5 and very often for cover price or even in overstock dollar bins, so the key to making money is “buy low, sell high” and at the current rates, I see a tremendous potential for growth in value in this book and a very minimal risk even if it fails to explode.

Batman #635 1st Red Hood… Is there any other character so cosplayed and loved other than JT under the Hood in such little time in publication? … He is so cool looking and badass and can either be a protagonist/antagonist or anti-hero in a movie… he can fill any role…… Punisher, Venom, Wolverine, Ghost Rider…. All those characters are so similar to Red Hood but their comic first apps cost so much money and have high print runs….(they also appeared in another character’s comic). Batman 635 could be an easy $250/300 in raw NM+ …. Such a Badass character who feels left out, outlawed, and discarded can be relatable just like the aforementioned Marvel badies … Wish I had a high grade keeper in my PC

I think Fantastic Four #52 is still a great investment today : just after the movie, prices climbed heavily. Many monthes later, those prices haven’t dropped at all. By example, 2 years ago, an “only” 3.5 sold for $250. Now, the same graded comics have settled at $350. We also all know that a 2nd Black Panther movie is in preparation. If this 2nd movie has the same qualities as the first, this already key-book will rise again in value significantly.

Detective Comics #880 is my pick. The price tag on this book is already out of the stratosphere, but once the Joker movies hit I think any classic Joker cover is going to balloon in value, and since there’s no better Joker cover than this one, I’m expecting a lot of love for this iconic image. Comic book characters come and go, but you’re rarely going to go wrong with the Joker. He’s already insanely popular, and the movies might just make him even more so. I think holding on to ‘Tec # 880 till the movies drop might be the way to go.

Fantastic Four 48 has to be on everyone’s radar of need to get ASAP. This book exploded once the merger was announced and for good reason too, marvel is going to the cosmos in their new phase. If you can think of one person that is involved in the cosmos with marvel it is Galactus. The mid grade prices are storming to over $500 and that will soon get closer to a grand once people are not sleeping on this book. Low grade copies are still somewhat affordable but that ball will drop soon. High grade? Well over into the thousands. All of this and it’s before anyone says he or the surfer are in the movies. This book is top priority for all.

Xmen #4 1992 series. First Omega Red. What an awesome villain! Potential MCU villain?

  • Avatar

I think there is plenty of room on X-Men 120 (first Alpha flight) the MCU has already shown an ability to bring little known characters to the forefront and bringing out this team will naturally connect to a later wolverine x-men connection.

  • Avatar

Given today’s environment, Marvel appears to be the best bet. This is based on the success of the Movies and TV shows driving the popular market. Depending on what Disney and MCU does with the X-Men, there are several books when they added in new “students” alah Rockslide, Hellion, etc. that could hold value, or at least be quick bumps. Long term, I would keep an eye on who they introduce into the current slate of movies. If it is Wolverine then the books we currently know about could see another jump.

  • lucipurr666

Venom Cates Series or Ms Marvel since the upcoming movie is starting to heat up. Never know with marvel with the high print runs.

There are a lot of books out there but I would say a safe bet would be Batgirl #23, Middleton variant is still a good deal at today’s prices compared to the potential it has down the road. It is a stunning cover that is already being copied! Just an instant classic! Right now un-graded, high grade copies are selling between $50 and $60 where graded 9.8 copies are going for $120 to $150. Still very affordable. I think it is just a matter of time before this cover is up there with Detective # 880. It’s that awesome!

It’s tough to choose between Ms Marvel #1 and Avenging Spiderman #9. With the trailer release today and the movie due early next year I think these books are going to start to soar. Then when Captain Marvel takes a bigger role in Avengers 5, these 2 books will have a HUGE price increase. Now is the time to get both these books!

I see Marvel making a foray into the supernatural. Ghost Rider and Morbius are obvious picks but I’m really liking the Son of Satan, Damion Hellstorm. My comic choice is Marvel Spotlight 12 which I feel, as do many others, is the true first appearance. There’s still a lot of room to grow with this book’s current price point.

  • Avatar

I think Captain America vol 3 #8 is a good bet with the new captain marvel movie coming out, as this is the first app of Bron Char who was shown to be in the trailer for the movie. I have just picked an issue up very cheap and think it has a lot of room to grow in the short term.

    The X-Men #97 (Feb 1976) – first appearance of the Shi’ar Empire.

We know that the MCU are headed toward the cosmic realm (i.e. Captain Marvel, The Eternals, GOTG Vol.3 etc) and we also know that it’s only a matter of time before the X-Men are brought into the MCU.

What better way to have the X-Men Introduced than having a storyline where the Shi’ar Empire are the cosmetic big bad against the Avengers and then have the X-Men come to the rescue.
