Covering the Spread 12: Staying Well Rounded

Happy Monday Comic Book Invest! Brandon here with the latest (and greatest?) Covering the Spread.  This week I have some interesting books for you.  I feel that sometimes I put too much emphasis on what books you should be buying so this week I wanted to include one you shouldn't be buying.  Hopefully I can save you all some money!

I also have a follow up on some previously announced spec at the end so stay tuned.  But before we get into the numbers I want to thank the Comic Collateral App for providing our pricing data.  Also for anyone who is new here I recommend jumping back to issue 8 where I break my analysis down in simple terms. Also as always I would like to stress that my estimates are made using 10 books you think have a chance at 9.8 not just any 10 copies you come across.

X-Force 2

Ah X-Force 2, there was a time when I was absolutely in love with this book.  Honestly a small part of me still is.  For anyone who's wondering why this book would ever see attention it's because this book contains the 2nd appearance of Deadpool.  Who cares about 2nd appearances?  Well I know Topher and I do.  But for anyone who doesn't have New Mutants 98 money this is a much more affordable investment.

Without Pressing:

Average Raw Price 7.28
10 Copies 72.82
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 180
Selling Fees 37.56
Total Costs 390.37

9.8 Av Price 9.6 Av Price 9.4 Av Price 9.2 Av Price
55.93 38.85 31 23.15
2 Copies 3 Copies 4 Copies 1 Copy Total Value
111.86 116.55 124 23.15 375.56

Well I guess the cats out of the bag.  That book I was telling you not to buy?  This is it.  Like I said a small part of me still loves this book and I pull it out of dollar bins whenever I see it there.  But that's the problem: a dollar is the most you should be paying for this book.  I don't care if the seller guarantees a 9.8 it's never worth paying over $10 for.

This would break down to an upfront investment of $352.81 and a loss of $14.81.  For the sake of consistency that would be a spread of -1.48. I did also break down the numbers including a press, but it only made matters worse.  So I can go back to something I haven't said since the early days of The Spread, If you want a copy buy one that's already graded!

Wolverine 1

This book and this cover are absolute classics.  If you don't already have one in your collection you really should.  This is even coming from someone who hates Frank Miller's art, although I think my opinion has been tainted by a lot of his newer stuff.  But my opinions aside what matters here are the numbers!

Average Raw Price 82.16
10 Copies 821.56

585.64 465.24 389.84 81.22 1521.94

Well after that last book we need some good numbers so let's see how this looks.  We have an upfront investment of $1101.56 and come away with $268.19 in profit.  That would be a spread of +26.82 and an ROI of about 24%.  That's obviously a better investment than X-Force 2 but still not at the same level of returns as some of the other books I've recommended.  The biggest point in favor of investing in this book though is how easy it is to sell.  If you post those graded copies for a decent price they will sell very quickly.

With Pressing:

Average Raw Price 82.16

With pressing we have a much more enticing picture.  Our upfront investment would be $1221.56 and our profits would be $442.34.  That is a spread of +44.23 and an ROI of about 36%.  That's a much more exciting investment and if you wanted to take those books and hold onto them for a few years I bet you could see even better returns.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero 1

Yes this was the book I mentioned a couple weeks ago.  For anyone who didn't read that article and hasn't heard there was a new series of movies announced around several toy franchises but this is the one to be excited about.  I'm probably in the minority but I enjoyed the other G.I. Joe movies and this book will always have a lot of nostalgia behind it.

Yo Joe! Our upfront investment would be $791.73 and we would come away with $447.26 in profits.  That's an outstanding spread of +44.73 and an ROI of over 56%! I don't think I have to tell you I like this book as an investment.  The other big thing to mention here is that I don't see a lot of speculators talking about this book so I think a lot of these sales are going to G.I. Joe collectors.  As more of these get tucked away into people's personal collection the prices will keep going up.

With pressing we get into a whole other ball game. Our upfront investments would land at $911.73 and our profits would land at $624.55.  That's a beautiful spread of +62.46 and an unbelievable ROI of 68.5%!  I for one am not going to be passing on any more NM copies of this book and I suggest you all pick up any that you see.

Wrap Up:

Well everyone that's all I have for you this week.  I hope you all enjoyed this weeks article but any feedback is always welcome in the comments below.  If anyone has any individual books or themes they would like me to cover I'm always listening.  It hasn't happened yet but I'm still gonna throw it out there.  Happy hunting, I'll be back in a week!
