The Wednesday One 08/29/18
Welcome to the night before Wednesday One! 08/29/18
5th week. Not much going on this week, but a few books to glance at. Why can't 5th week be cool like 4th meal, 2nd breakfast or elevensies? The food math on that doesn't work I know, but you get the point. We get some annuals, some silly crossover books, and it is usually slow. I feel like it is a missed opportunity to do something cool like awesome amateur covers and maybe even get guest writers to do some fun issues. But what do I know. Let check out this week anyway.
|Venom First Host #1 Cover C Incentive Rod Reis Variant Cover 1:25
1st app of Tel-Kar the Kree 1st host should make this book hot. This is also a much better cover than the 1:50. I think grabbing it for half ratio or less should be safe and I think it will have more action than the 1:50. Presales are all over today from $40-20 with most around $30. I think $20 is more realistic with several bins for $20. I think it stays on the higher side of $15-20. I really like this cover.
|Venom First Host #1 Cover D Incentive John Cassaday Variant Cover 1:50
This cover isn't bad, but it isn't good either. Bottom line Tel-Kar is on the cover. It is the highest ratio variant also. It is the rarest so I think half ratio or less, better if less. I don't hear a lot of folks clamoring for this 1st app and it isn't a Cates book, but Venom is hot and so is spec for it. Presales seem consistent at $30. I wonder if people will care and it stays or rises, or if people skip it and it drops to half ratio or less. My guess is it sits $25-30.
|Batgirl Vol 5 #26 Cover B Variant Joshua Middleton Cover
Not as good as his other recent covers, but not too shabby.
|Silencer Annual #1
I like this Kirkham cover and Silencer is a great read.
|Hunt For Wolverine Dead Ends #1 Cover A Regular Marco Checchetto Cover
I like this Checchetto. These lead-up books have mostly been misses though.
|Star Wars Poe Dameron Annual #2 Cover A Regular Rod Reis Cover
The other great Reis cover this week. Hammerin Poe Dameron is a consistently good read.
I love this cover and I think this is a great long hold also. Probably going to be the best one of these crossovers this week.
|Catwoman Tweety & Sylvester Special #1 Cover A Regular Emanuela Lupacchino Cover
I'll give it a shot. I like this Lupacchino cover more than the B cover, but I wish Sylvester and Tweety were the cartoon version on this cover.
|Isola #5 Cover B Variant Karl Kerschl & Msassyk Cover
Isola is really good so far. Def recommend if you haven't tried it yet.
|Fantastic Four #1 Facsimile Edition
I like this reprint. It is a cash grab for sure at $4. The $1 true believers edition price would have been great. I'll probably grab a clean copy.
|Moon Knight Vol 8 #198
I'm still digging this MK run. I'm one of the few.
|Web Of Venom VeNam #1 Cover B Variant Goran Parlov Cover
If Cates is on it, I'll read it. Plus he drops so many 1st apps all the time it seems like every other book gets hot.
|Beyonders #1 Cover B Variant Andi Ewington Cover
Interesting premise. I'll give it a shot. Seems to be selling out online, but I don't think it heats up.
|Hillbilly Red-Eyed Witchery From Beyond #1
Hillbilly is great, but I hope all 4 issues come out on time.
|Lex Luthor Porky Pig Special #1 Cover B Variant Mac Rey Cover
This is the least interesting sounding one imo. I'll flip thru this one, but I'm probably leaving it on the shelf.
|Deadpool Assassin #6 Cover B Variant John Tyler Christopher Cover
Last of the mini. I often forget JTC can do non-action figure covers.
|Walk Through Hell #4
This book is hot right now on rumors of being optioned. A lot of folks really like it, but there are many that don't care for it. I'm still on board for #4.
|X-Men Grand Design Second Genesis #2 Cover B Variant Ed Piskor Cover
These are just cool. I love the style and feel. Such a fun read.
|Submerged #2 Cover A Regular Jen Bartel Cover
I really liked the 1st issue and will grab the 2nd. There is a 2nd print of the first issue out this week also if you want to give it a try. It is a cool homage too.
- Harbinger Wars 2 #4 Cover E Incentive Felipe Massafera 1:50– High ratio Valiant are good flips if you find them cheap enough.
- Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Shattered Grid #1 – There are a few variants for this title and some of these grab some heat. I don't know anything about MMPR and have no idea. I hear from fans that MMPR is well written and has great stories regardless of the IP.
- Champions (Marvel) Vol 2 #22 Cover B 2nd Ptg Variant Kevin Libranda Cover – I'm not big on 2nd prints, but it has the new costumes/looks for Riri and Cho
(whatever his new name is I forget). I might grab one, but I will probably skip.
- **edit** Edge Of Spider-Geddon #2 – I totally forgot about this one. rumored 1st apps. Isn't sold out online but might pick up tomorrow.
Bonus look back – how did last week do a week later?
How did last week's spec end up doing? We take a look at last week's predictions and see if we did OK one week later!!!
(Last week's spec will be quoted like this. What it really did will look like this.)
Die Die Die #1 Cover E Incentive Retailer Appreciation Gold Foil Variant Cover – Better late than never. These are pre-selling $30-40. I think it drops during the week to $25-30, but then again that drunk variant stayed hot when I thought it would drop. I think if you can grab it under $20. – This seems to be ~$20 it had some highs up to double that. Seems to still have some
Life Of Captain Marvel Vol 2 #2 Cover C Incentive Terry Dodson Variant Cover 1:25 – I really like this cover, but I think it won't do much. Carol is hot right now though. Under $10 might be a grab for me, but I think it sits $10-15 which isn't great by any means. – Highs of $20, but movement is slow and seems to be around $15 now.
Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur #34 – This is gonna be a long hold imo. Should be the 1st full app of Devin. This will pair well with #33. This book was expected so I think it has a higher than normal print run, but that is still small. – This is still available everywhere for cover.
West Coast Avengers Vol 3 #1 Cover E Incentive Terry Dodson Variant Cover 1:50 – This cover isn't one of the better Dodson's this week. I don't really like anything about this book, but possible 1st app and a new team. I'll grab one if I see it for cheap, but I won't be happy about it. Few sales ~$30 I think grab it under $20 to be safe, maybe less. – This book is a dumpster fire of a read, but it sold for higher than I expected. Recent sales all over from $30-50 with a $40 bin available. Not a lot of them sold this week either, but it did hit a ~$50 high. There was one sale for $74 but it doesn't make sense.
Batman Kings Of Fear #1 Cover B Variant Bill Sienkiewicz Cover This is a great Bill cover and seems to be sold out online. May even grab a lil heat, but I doubt it. – This was a cool cover and an error variant which helped it go for double cover.
DUCKTALES #11 BEAKS 1:10 VARIANT – I had forgotten about this one so I added it later as a note. – These always seem to get $10-15 and this is right inline.
SHADOWMAN #6 1:50 – If you see this book, buy it. The cover is good and it will be stupid rare. I can see this book being $$$$ – Honestly, I'm shocked this only got $35-50 with a bin available for $50 still. Is the Valiant hype train over?
5th week needs to be better. There is no “One” but there could have easily been a stand out if they tried. It isn't a terrible week or anything, there are some good reads and a few covers to look at. What do Y'all think about 5th weeks? Do y'all sleep in or is it just more of a challenge to find a hidden gem while others are sleeping? Let me know what Y'all think and if I missed anything. Thanks!
