The Wednesday One 08/15/18

Welcome to the night before Wednesday One! 08/15/18

Another seemingly slow week, but this one has a few gems. There is a “One” for the first time in a while. This week has a good mix of covers and reads too which is nice. I like a good blend when possible. Let's take a look at what this week has for us.

Justice League Vol 4 #6 Cover C Incentive Jim Lee Pencils Cover 1:100

I love these Lee pencils and grab them when I can. Some have kept values at half of the ratio which isn't bad, but not amazing either. No recent sales for this one yet, but an auction is over $50 so far. I think $30 or less is a safe flip as I think most of these sit at half of the ratio around release, but a few are as little as $25 now. I think these are increasing in rarity and have a chance for long-term love.

Weatherman #3 Cover C Incentive James Harren Variant Cover 1:25

I'm surprised this hasn't sold out online. These variants seemed popular enough for the first 2 issues. After looking at recent sales for any of the 1:25s, unless I missed something it seems like interest has died hard for these. If you see this for cover or right over it might flip. Maybe just ignore it. I didn't care for it at first, but it has grown on me.

Infinity Wars #2 Cover E Incentive Yasmine Putri Variant Cover

I like this cover and will try to grab one. This one was selling for over ratio till this afternoon when it dropped to a low of $13.  I think it ends up staying a $10-12 book when the market floods so try to grab it for under that. I think most stores easily get 25 copies.

Aquaman Vol 6 #39 Cover B Variant Joshua Middleton Cover

This one is hot and presales mostly around $10-12, but some way over that. There should be a flood on the market Wednesday, but I think this has staying power at ~$10. This is the “One.” I think if you can grab a few maybe flip half and save half. This cover is sexy and powerful, the more I look at it the more I love it.

Cool Covers

Weapon H #6 Cover B Variant J Scott Campbell Return Of The Fantastic Four Cover

This is a great JSC cover and a definite grab for my PC. This might even see slow long-term gains as there are a lot of JSC fans.

Batgirl Vol 5 #25 Cover B Variant Joshua Middleton Cover

This one seemed to really divide the Middleton audience. A lot of folks loved it and a lot didn't care for it. I like it, but don't love it, still a grab for me.

Terminator Sector War #1 Cover B Variant Grzegorz Domaradzki Cover

I probably won't grab this one, but it is a good cover.

Batman Vol 3 #53 Cover B Variant Kaare Andrews Cover

Andrews continues his great run of covers.

Cable Deadpool Annual #1 Cover B Variant Rob Liefeld Cover

I'm not a Liefeld fan, but many are. This is one of his better recent covers imo.

Tony Stark Iron Man #3 Cover B Variant Adam Hughes Return Of The Fantastic Four Cover

Good Hughes, an easy grab for me.

Tony Stark Iron Man #3 Cover C Variant Moebius Cover

I think it is cool when we get to see some art from passed creators like Jean Giraud. Not my fav cover but very cool none the less.

Wild Storm #16 Cover B Variant Sana Takeda Cover

Not the best Sana covers but still good and I think there is a good but small Sana following.

Read it

Injustice 2 #32

Consistently one of the best DC titles.

Pearl #1 Cover B Variant Alex Maleev Cover

I'm torn on this cover. Half the time I look at it I like it the other half I don't. I hope this is a good read either way.

Analog #5 Cover A Regular David OSullivan Cover

I was really happy this was optioned, but I don't think many folks are reading it. It is really good so far.

Crowded #1 Cover B Variant Rachael Stott Cover

Optioned before release is interesting and makes this highly anticipated for me.

Evolution #9

One of my favorite reads each month. I can't wait. I really recommend it.

Gideon Falls #6 Cover B Variant Jeff Lemire Cover

I'm not caught up, but I know a lot of folks are digging it. I like the Lemire cover.

Magic Order #3 Cover B Variant Olivier Coipel Black & White Cover

MO has been much better than I anticipated. I'm excited for #3.

Weapon X Vol 3 #22

Solicit says “debut of WEAPON X-FORCE!.” I have this on my pull. It has been good fun, not great, but I'm curious how this new team plays out. The interior art is interesting. I kinda dig this cover also.

Thor Vol 5 #4 Cover A Regular Mike Del Mundo Cover

I'm digging it so far and will check out #4.

Volition #1 Cover B Variant Chris Evenhuis Cover

I curious about this book. It sounds like a cool premise almost Star Trek-like in terms of rights for AI lifeforms. I'm grabbing a reader, but small chance it heats up too.

Ice Cream Man #6 Cover B Variant Christian Ward Cover

I never got into this title, but I hear good things. I need to give a few issues a try.

Lost City Explorers #3

The first two issues were okay. I'm not sure if I'll grab the 3rd.

Bonus look back – how did last week do a week later?

How did last week's spec end up doing? We take a look at last week's predictions and see if we did OK one week later!!!

(Last week's spec will be quoted like this. What it really did will look like this.)

Black Badge #1 Cover D Incentive Jeff Lemire Virgin Variant Cover 1:20 – I like Lemire's style and I hope I can find a reasonably priced copy. This book might have a flip chance. It will be relatively low print run and only a few for sale so far. I don't see any recent sales and the few listed are for ratio. I think if you can grab it for half ratio it has a good chance to flip, but it is a mini-series iirc so dump it quickly if you are going to. This is doing okay at half ratio. Recent sales $10-12. I like it as a read so far.

Fantastic Four Vol 6 #1 Cover V Incentive Alex Ross Variant Cover 1:50 and Virgin 1:200 –  Both seem to be selling for about half ratio, maybe a little under for the 1:50, which is actually really good considering the massive print run this book has. I can't count how many store variants there are so be cautious. Plus Ross covers tend to not flip as well. I think 25% of ratio is safe. Maybe go a little higher for the 1:200. I grabbed a 1:50 off eBay for $24 shipped because I like it so much. I probably could get it cheaper in a few months, but I didn't want to wait. – This did badly. 1:50 sitting around $15, the 1:200 recently went for $75. ouch. I didn't realize that the virgin cover just removed the issue number box… why…. A swing and a miss.

Riptide (Red 5 Comics) #1 – 4 issue mini that sounds interesting. Should be a very low print run so I hope I can grab one at my lcs. No spec had it as a read. The last sale was yesterday at $15. This should be getting back to cover soon.

Wrap Up

A good overall week and a definitive “One.” That Middleton Aquaman is hot, has a great cover and should be attainable for many while keeping heat. This week has something for everyone and these seem to be my favorite kind of weeks. Nothing to crazy, just a good blend. Let me know what you think about this week and if I missed anything. Thanks for reading and happy Wednesday!

I don’t know, maybe it’s because I saw the original art at Atlanta comic con, but I really love the Hughes FF variant on Stark IM, this week. That said, I actually think my favorite cover of the week is the Gamora secret variant. It probably won’t go much over $10, but I dig it.

  • SkillzWeldon

I almost forgot about the Aquaman #39 Middleton. I really liked the #32 for PC if I see a few will definitely flip for some profit. Great Article each Tuesday night…

That Batman 53 is amazing! Can’t believe I completely glossed over the cover art until just now. Excellent as always Adam, Aquaman 39 is def the one!

I f***ing LOVE Moebius man, nobody else has ever done anything like him. When everyone was focusing on big characters with big expressions taking up the entire image, he was making the heroes look smaller, more grounded, less important and more realistic as a result.

Wow, No talk about the marvel chase variant of infinity wars 2

Cavewoman Raptorellas Revenge #2 Cover F by the amazing Conny Valentina is not mentioned in this article, but it belongs in the cool covers in my opinion.

  • Beezle

Nice. I was hyping that Aquaman Middleton variant as a hot issue three weeks ago on this site. It will flood Ebay tomorrow, but I think it will hold value as many people hit their comic shops on Wednesday looking for it and find that speculators have gobbled up all the existing copies.

My obscure cover pick of week is Revenge of Wonderland (2C). These regular Zenescope comic rarely ever go up in value, but I really like this cover by Jay Anacleto.

Also, surprised that there is no mention of Rejected from Source Point. Has an intriguing premise and looks like it will be really scarce. Could it be this week’s Riptide? Probably not. But just in case, here’s hoping I can find a few tomorrow.

    • Lebednik

rejected looks interesting, but one-shots hardly ever heat up imo

    • Avatar

The Rejected was pushed back to a August 29th release, was looking forward to reading it but will have to wait.

      • Avatar

My LCS had The Rejected. The premise was interesting but I found the art to be terrible so I passed.

        • Lebednik

          interesting. thx

        • Beezle

The interior artwork is dreadful (unless you’re into that kind of messy/unorthodox style) and the storyline is rather cliche, but, because of its current rarity, the book is still a pretty decent flip if you can find one or two.

          • Beezle

Hot diggity damn! The current scarcity of The Rejected has really worked in its favor. A number of sales over $30 (including postage) and two recent sales of $48.99 and $50!!! So, not only has this little title reached Riptide status, it has surpassed it, thanks to the naivete (and impatience) of buyers who don’t seem to realize this will be released in greater numbers in a couple of weeks (or that it can be ordered off the company’s website — just like Riptide, which is still available for $3.95 from Red 5).

So, now the question is, sell now or hold for a week or so and gamble that this title could reach even loftier heights (Do I hear $75? $100?) Obviously, it must be dumped sooner than later before more copies are released, but should one be satisfied with $50 and take the money and run or aim higher?

BTW, one seller has this listed as a Buy It Now for $39.99 but with a whopping $30 shipping fee!!! I assume it was supposed to be $3 but was typed in wrong. The crazy thing is, if the price of this title keeps climbing, someone might actually buy it.

Count me in the camp of loving the Batgirl cover. I thought it was a photo of a cosplayer when I first saw it.

  • Avatar

My local LCS has plenty of the Middleton Batgirl but none of his Aquaman. They only ordered 2 copies of the regular Aquaman and weren’t aware of the variant until after cutoff.

  • Avatar

Think both the Middleton Batgirl and Aquaman are good holds for cover.

  • Avatar

Our shop got 2 of the Aquaman covers. So I snagged one for me and one for my friend. I had already pre-ordered 5 of the Batgirls from Midtown.
