HOT 10 COMICS

1 Incredible Hulk #181

WRITER: Len Wein
ARTIST: Herb Trimpe
Yes, this book could be on the Hot 10 almost weekly, but the numbers are staggering.  A month ago, GPA for 8.0's was around $3k.  Now they are hitting $4k.  This insanity has to stop…..or does it?

2 Fantastic Four #1

WRITER: Stan Lee
ARTIST: Jack Kirby
Sales in the past couple of months are up 25-40% across the board.  A 0.5 will run you $3500 when a year ago, it was $1k.  Who has this kind of cash??? And now all you silver/bronze age key collectors can get off my back 🙂

3 Infinity Wars #1 Mike Deodato 2/Store Variant

WRITER: Gerry Duggan
ARTIST: Mike Deodato

Requiem reveal in this issue, but is a yellow to purple color change from the ‘A' cover really worth the current $50 price tag?

4 Batman #608 2nd Print

WRITER: Jeph Loeb
ARTIST: Jim Lee
I've said it before, this is a must have for Batman collectors.  After a long lull in the $200's, it has been creeping up again and a 9.8 just sold for $360…probably related to the ‘Hush' DC animated movie.

6 The Last Days of American Crime #1

WRITER: Rick Remender
ARTIST: Greg Tocchini
Remender revealed that this series was optioned (surpised that it wasn't one of his other series).  Anyway, these Maleev covers from this series are incredible and this one is getting $20-25 right now.

7 Flash (Vol. 2) #170

WRITER: Geoff Johns
ARTIST: Scott Kolins
Cicada's 1st appearance and he will be the baddy for Season 5 of the Flash.  Can't see this as a long term hold, but $25-30 isn't bad.

8 Captain Marvel (Vol. 6) #14

WRITER: Kelly Sue DeConnick
ARTIST: Scott Hepburn
I will be the 1st to admit that when this book hit $600 that I thought that was the peak.  Now 9.8's are selling for almost $900 and raws are hitting $200.  What do I know?

9 Strange Tales #180

WRITER: Jim Starlin
ARTIST: Jim Starlin

I would assume that the Requiem news has renewed the interest in this book.  This has long been a key that is overlooked, mainly because of the cover…can you imagine if the Gamora #2 Mattina cover were around back then how much this would go for?  Anyways, NM raws are now $225+ and a CGC 9.4 sold for $325.

10 Monstress #1

WRITER: Marjorie Liu
ARTIST: Sana Takeda
I haven't heard any recent news on this series, but NM copies of #1 are up again…this time hitting $50.

Mainstream #2 Talent Caldwell Variant /250

WRITER: Michael Dolce
ARTIST: Talent Caldwell
As I've stated 1000 times before, I don't write the lists, the lists write themselves.  Buyers want this and are paying $50-70 for this.  What can I say, handcuffs sell.

Four Color (Vol. 2) #4

WRITER: Various
ARTIST: Zack Mosley
Yes, it is the highest graded, and yes it is a Mile High Pedigree, but $3300 for a CGC 9.4 is crazy.

  • Awesome list as always!! Monstress is seeing a nice hike after the several wins at the Eisner Awards.

I think this book is massively undervalued.

    • I agree it is undervalued…

Aside from the multiple awards won, the buzz was especially generated from Marjorie Liu being the first woman to win an Eisner for best writer.

I’m enjoying the blunt honesty of this article, and the almost weekly read. Thanks!

  • Second Print of Monstress #1 is the one to own. Not sure if it’s currently moving up as much as the first print though.

    Great job Ben S!!

I am glad to see FF finally catching back up. Marvel would not exist without it!

  • Tue L

This week Top 10 is epic Ben. Hulk 181 finally made it. Good mixture!

  • Some Heavy hitters this week! Have a few of them…wish I had them all, but what can you do? Didn’t realize Batman #608 2nd print has gone up so much!…Still remember getting it off the shelf when it first came out…I figured since it was second print it probably wouldn’t go up in value all that much, but it had a cool cover…..Shows how much I know, huh? Anyway, I should probably send it in for grading. Should be an easy 9.6 with a chance of a 9.8.

  • Really great job. Love reading this every week. Only two for me this time, no.’s 3 and 5.

  • LOL 181 will never drop again good bye 181 I’ll never see a copy for the PC maybe 180

    • Yeah, key Marvel’s have been going nuts since the movies took them global! Everyone wants a piece now. Maybe try doing what I do every now and then if you haven’t already. Use Paypal to make a big purchase on Ebay… Sales over I think $500 have an option of two years no interest if paid in full by the end of the two years. If you decide to do that wait for a 8 or 10% ebay bucks promotion and then make a purchase that fits a comfortable monthly payment. By the time you pay off that Hulk 181 in two years it could be worth twice what you paid for it..maybe more!….just sayin.

  • Great Article, Ben! Yes, the CM #14 is moving higher & higher every week. I have one up for sale…hoping for a big sale. All 1st Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel or Kamala Khan books are selling at all-time highs. Is there a ceiling in sight?

    • Just sold one of my CM 14s. Took a best offer for the $200 that is mentioned in the article. Still have a copy left with a slightly bent corner. Better hold on to it.

Top 10 is my favorite article on the site. Keep up the great work!

  • Mike Morello

For infinity wars #1, I think the A cover is, by far, the nicest. Color change or not, add in the 2/store rarity and I can see why it’s hot. Probably won’t last long, though.

  • I ordered the fantastic four 1 facsimile reprint that is coming out this month. Page per page with fake aging it looks really cool.

  • That damn Hulk 181 again. Jeeeeeez. It keeps showing up freakin’ everywhere. Argh.

    • Tue L

When was the last time Hulk 181 made the top 10? I may have missed it.

      • Not sure. I’m just having some frustrated fun with it since it’s the only major bronze age key I will NEVER own. It’s been talked about a lot in forums and G+ groups because of its rising value lately in all grades. Like AJ said below. Should have snagged one years ago.

  • A. J. Diesel

Ben always put out stout and legitimate work. Hulk 181 is THE. BOOK that everyone should have bought ten years ago.
I bought two and have a 6.5 and 7.0…that being said, you neee to know when to turn and when to burn. Monsters and Indy fans, TREAD LIGHTLY!!

  • flipdb25

Nice work!! Knocking it out of the park per usual!!

  • Great list!
Moon Knight 25 (last weeks honorable mention), just sold for $113. I think this window has closed.

  • I picked a copy of that Strange Tales #180 I think like 13 or 15 years ago for $1 in very nice shape.

  • Topher

Nice job, I look forward to reading this every week.

  • I have finally after sooooooo many months evens years at this point of searching found a copy of Monstress 1 first print. Paid a dollar …. hell yeah!!!!
