Covering the Spread 5

Guten Tag CBSI!  Welcome back to Covering the Spread!  For the past few weeks we've done some different themes but this week there was nothing specific I wanted to talk about so I guess that makes our theme money?  However I did want to make one adjustment to our normal discussion and that is about selling fees.  All the sales figures we discuss in this article (and really the theory behind it) are based around buying and selling on eBay.  With that in mind I will be adding a 10% selling fee onto our cost analysis.  I think that will give us a more complete picture of how good of an investment these books are, but if you all hate it let me know and we can always go back to not including it.  With that said let's move on to the books!

Amazing Spider-Man 316 Cover

Amazing Spider-Man 316

I wanted to start things off today with a book that I did not realize had gone so high in price (Thanks as always to the Comic Collateral App for the heads up).   With prices for Amazing Spider-Man 300 reaching all time highs, I think a lot of people have turned to this issue as a more affordable option. Most listings on eBay are calling this his 1st cover appearance but personally I would say that was the previous issue:

Amazing Spider-Man 315 Cover

Hey, it may be small but he's still on there!  Plus for those who enjoy 2nd appearances that honor belongs to issue 315 as well.

Without Pressing:

Average Raw Price 82.896
10 Copies 828.96
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 180
Selling Fees 164.91
Total Costs 1273.87

321.68 153.82 111.19 99.49
2 Copies 3 Copies 4 Copies 1 Copy Total Value
643.36 461.46 444.76 99.49 1649.07

So for an upfront investment of $1,108.96 we expect to make $375.20 which lands the spread at +37.52.  This would also be almost a 34% ROI if you prefer to look at it that way.  Not a bad investment by any means.  Looking through the recent sales I am pretty confident that if you keep your eyes peeled you'll be able to snag a deal on some nice copies of this book and even do a little better!

That means with pressing included we would have an upfront investment of $1,228.96 and a return of $531.91.  This lands the spread at +53.19 and our ROI at about 43%.  That means that pressing will add about an extra 9% in returns which is well worth the investment I believe.  Especially with how positively received everything at SDCC was I think this is a really good book to put your money into.

Booster Gold 1 cover

Booster Gold 1

Okay, I really enjoyed the new trailer for Shazam. I know not everyone did but it looks like it is some good light-hearted fun, which is something the DC Movies are very much in need of.  If that movie goes well I think Booster Gold could be another great, fun character to bring into the DCEU (Worlds of DC? Seriously?).

Without Pressing:

Average Raw Price 38.33

2 Copies 3 Copies 4 Copies 1 Copy Total Value
467.14 339.99 302.84 49.99 1159.96

So this book has a pretty similar spread to our first one but there is a big difference between them.  For Booster Gold we have an upfront investment of $663.35 we would have a return of $380.62.  That would be a spread of +38.06 and, here's that big difference, an ROI of 57%!  I don't think I'm crazy for saying that's a pretty good investment.

With pressing we have an upfront investment of $783.34 and profits of $493.56.  That will put our spread at +49.35 and our ROI at a whopping 63%!  Pressing this book is going add plenty of value and is totally worthwhile.  Also don't forget there is a Canadian Newsstand variant for this book as well!

Uncanny X-Men 266 Cover

Uncanny X-Men 266

Well with the Fox/Disney deal seeming like it's going to go through the solo Gambit movie is likely DOA.  But I think that makes this book an outstanding target for investment.  Why?  Well there are a lot of disappointed speculators out there right now who bought this book expecting that movie to be made and they are dumping them for low prices.  This is still a key, and it always will be.

Without Pressing:

Average Raw Price 97.59

849.16 581.55 573.72 132.77 2137.20

Well once all the chips are down (Pun very much intended) we will have an upfront investment of $1,255.99 and profits of $667.49.  That's a spread of +66.75 making this the highest spread of the week, but with ROI at 53% it doesn't quite beat out Booster Gold.  X-Men 266 is much more important book though and in my opinion much more likely to go up in the future.

Well with pressing included our initial investment is $1,375.99 and our profits would be $900.86.  That lands us at a spread of +90.08 and an ROI of 65%!  With pressing Gambit comes out on top in both Spread and ROI.  Don't forget this issue does also have a Mark Jewelers Variant if you're looking for something to hunt for!

Well that's all I have for this week!  As always thank you to the Comic Collateral App for our pricing data.  What did everyone think do you prefer when I stick to some kind of theme or would you rather have me just pick random books?  Does everyone like me included selling fees in our costs? Let me know in the comments, and I'll see you all in a week!

  • Catching up and reading your back articles. This is such a fount of wisdom, thank you. I think the way you’re doing it with seller’s fees is great. Maybe for the selected books it would be great to just watch some of the comments about books that people are discussing the most on the forums. It would be a great boon to us noobs to track these “hot” books. Maybe even try some of the Hot 10 Books… just a few ideas. Thanks so much, you’ve really given me a much better understanding of this whole thing..
