Covering the Spread 4

Hello again CBSI and welcome back to Covering the Spread!  After last week’s experiment with mid grade copies I decided that I wanted to go back to high grade books but I’m still going to do something a little bit different.  This week I’m going to try to predict which storyline the MCU will be adapting next! We will be taking a look at 3 story arcs that I think are very likely to be adapted for use in future MCU movies whether that be for 1 or several movies down the line. Sound good?  Too bad I’ve already committed!

Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars

If you’re anything like me when you think of classic Marvel Comics crossovers this is one of the first that springs to mind.  I often hear this cited (incorrectly) as their first but I think that is because this story is so well known to comic fans. The story is pretty simple for the uninitiated, a character called “The Beyonder” kidnaps a bunch of heroes and villains, brings them to another planet and tells them to fight each other.

This storyline is best known for being the origin of Spider-Man’s black costume and that origin (in issue 8) is the most valuable from the series, but I think it’s best to look at the first issue if we’re investing in iconic storylines.

How likely is it that this will be adapted? Well Captain America: Civil War already made all the money at the box office so I think this would be an easy movie to pitch to Disney.

Everyone loves to see their favorite heroes fighting each other it’s just fun! I will say I think it is unlikely they would give Spider-Man his black costume or go into anything Venom as long as Sony is holding onto the rights for solo movies and I don’t think that will change anytime soon.

In terms of likelihood I give this 6/10.  Even if it’s not “Avengers 5” eventually they will at the very least use this as a title to drum up nostalgia.  With that said let’s take a look at the numbers!

Without Pressing:

Average Raw Price 15.57
10 Copies 155.71
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 180
Total Costs 435.71

9.8 Av Price 9.6 Av Price 9.4 Av Price 9.2 Av Price
177.36 78.31 43.08 24.88
2 Copies 3 Copies 4 Copies 1 Copy Total Value
354.72 234.93 172.32 24.88 786.85

I bet a lot of you were ready to laugh at me when I suggested this book!  Regardless we would be coming away with a tidy profit of $351.14 and a spread of +35.11.  That’s not bad for a book that probably in every back issue bin in America. I do have some extra notes I wanted to mention for this book.

This average raw price is an odd one, auctions usually end with 1-2 bidders at less than $5 and buy it now books usually sell around $20 (Kudos to whoever managed to sell a raw book for $50).  If you want to sell this book raw, DON’T AUCTION IT OFF. You’ll be able to get at least 3 times your money if you’re just patient. However if you want to buy raw copies you should watch out for the auctions, one for a “NM/MT” copy ended at $1.25 last month!

With Pressing:

Average Raw Price 15.57
10 Copies 155.71
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 180
Pressing Fees (EST) 120
Total Costs 555.71

9.8 Av Price 9.6 Av Price 9.4 Av Price
177.36 78.31 43.08
3 Copies 5 Copies 2 Copies Total Value:
532.08 391.55 86.16 1009.79

As usual pressing helps us come out father ahead.  This would give us a profit of $454.08 and a spread of +45.41!  Like I said before that’s pretty great for a book I know I’ve left in a bin several times.  If my hunch is correct and we eventually see this adapted for the big screen I think this book will see a huge increase!

Secret Wars

Secret wars for anyone who hasn't read it is basically Invasion of the Body Snatchers but with superheroes. If that doesn't sound awesome to you then you probably don't have a pulse. This storyline revolves around the Skrulls. The same Skrulls that will soon be introduced in Captain Marvel which is, for reasons Marvel has not revealed is set in the 90s. Could it be that Bucky Barnes is actually dead and The Winter Soldier has been a Skrull the whole time? Who knows, but that's the fun of this concept!

Even if this is not the concept they use for Avengers 5 I strongly believe this movie will be made eventually. Unfortunately the first issue does not sell often enough for us to do a breakdown of the numbers. Maybe someday I will come back to it but for now, Spoiler Alert there isn't much of a difference in price so buy them already graded.

The other thing I would mention in regards to this storyline is that it seems very likely that after the next avengers movie the MCU will be in need of a new “Big Bad” and I think it would be fun to see them use the Super Skrull!  For anyone unfamiliar the Super Skrull made his first appearance in Fantastic Four 18.

The basic outline of the story is after the initial attempt at invasion fails (looking at you Captain Marvel) the  Skrulls decide to send a Super Skrull who has all the powers of the Fantastic Four to try and defeat them so they can invade again.  This could easily be updated to have the Super Skrull able to replicate ALL the Avengers’ powers and I think that would make for a very interesting villain.

The Coming of Galactus!

As we were just discussing if Thanos bites the dust in Avengers 4 that will leave the MCU in need of a need big villain for all these heroes to be fighting against.  If that’s the case and this deal with Fox goes through I can think of no one better than Galactus (provided they don’t turn him into a giant cloud monster anyway). That would be the kind of threat big enough to bring every hero together to try and stop.

But this isn’t a book you’ll see a lot of raw NM copies for and with 9.8 copies going for over $25,000 I don’t think covering the spread on this book will be particularly helpful. Don’t worry though I’m not gonna leave everyone with only one spread to look at this week.  It’s a bit of a leap but if the MCU brings in a big cosmic villain they will probably also bring in a big cosmic hero and my guess at who we’ll see soon is…

Nova! I know this is a big leap from talking about Galactus but I still think there’s a good chance that Nova will be making an appearance in the MCU.  Plus there was also a point where Nova, although a different Nova, was a herald of Galactus. Anyways enough chit chat let’s look at some numbers!

Without Pressing:

Average Raw Price 93.50
10 Copies 935
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 585
Total Costs 1620

9.8 Av Price 9.6 Av Price 9.4 Av Price 9.2 Av Price
706.49 221.68 147.77 93.66
2 Copies 3 Copies 4 Copies 1 Copy Total Value
1412.98 665.04 591.08 93.66 2762.76

So on Nova 1 we have a profit of $1142.76 and a spread of +114.28.  I will also say that I ran the numbers with us submitting these under the standard tier but I’m pretty sure you could get away with sending these in under modern and save yourself even more money.

Hopefully that makes up for the flimsy tie to Galactus. I will say there are not many raw copies available in high grade right now but if you see them for a good price go ahead and pick them up!

With Pressing:

Average Raw Price 93.50
10 Copies 935
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 585
Pressing Fees (EST) 600
Total Costs 2220

9.8 Av Price 9.6 Av Price 9.4 Av Price
706.49 221.68 147.77
3 Copies 5 Copies 2 Copies Total Value:
2119.47 1108.40 295.54 3523.41

Holy smokes does the pressing fee go up between the standard and modern tier.  If anyone is actually sending this in I would highly recommend sending them in under modern and saving yourself $48 a book.

Worst case scenario they tell you to pay the extra fee if you want them pressed. Regardless pressing leaves us with a profit of $1303.41 and a spread of +130.34.  For the record +218.84 if they will let you submit them under modern. Not too shabby for a character half the audience would never have heard of!

That’s all for this issue!  As always, thank you to Comic Collateral for providing our pricing info.

Hope you enjoyed it and we’ll see you in a week!

  • “If” Phase five starts going “cosmic” Secret Wars might be a good bet with the first appearance of the Beyonder even if the story line isn’t followed to the letter.

I agree its refreshing to see data backup someone’s information. The tough part is finding nice copy to complete that data point. It would take me a long time to find 10 nice copies like that at fair prices.

Its why I respect that sellers that do this full time. There isn’t a lot of margin for error when submitting books. One book that you miss a defect on can cost you dearly.
