The Weekend After Wednesday for 7/7/2018

Want to know which books from Wednesday’s new deliveries are already heating up and which ones are cooling? Here’s a “Weekend After” list that we hope will help! This isn’t a reflection on the quality, collectability or long-term potential of recently released books. This is based on today’s market price for books that came out on Wednesday, 7/4/18. They could still be at your shop.

HOT

DEATH OF INHUMANS #1 (OF 5) 1:10 ANDREWS DESIGN VARIANT (MARVEL) – Design variants are notoriously terrible sellers.  There are very few that hold value.  This VOX design variant has broken that rule.  It’s been selling for an average of $24.  It’s almost tied with the Hildebrant 1:25 variant (selling at $25).

NIGHTWING #46 OLIVER “B” VARIANT (DC) – This is a fairly tepid HOT.  This is selling for $10-$11 shipped.  There was one sale at $30 shipped, but that seemed like an outlier.  This pairs really well with Middleton’s Batgirl #24 variant.

STAR WARS LAST JEDI ADAPTATION #4 REIS 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL) – The last sale for this variant was on the 4th and sold for $42. There are only two on eBay right now.  One is an auction and currently at $24 with 4 days left.  The other is for $185 (after shipping from the UK).  This is the book to hunt… if you can find one.

LAST WEEK UPDATE

BATGIRL #24 MIDDLETON “B” VARIANT (DC) – This Middleton variant is still holding at $11 to $13 shipped.

BLOODSTRIKE #23 LIEFELD “THE POUCH” VARIANT (IMAGE) – For the most part, this is still holding at $15 shipped.

CHAMPIONS #19 & #20 CONNECTING 2NDPRINTS (MARVEL) –These dropped a bit from $30 shipped for a set to $25.  That’s still a decent flip after buying them at cover price.

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL #1 1:25 VARIANT (BOOM!) – This week, this variant went for $40 and now sells for $23 shipped.

MOON GIRL AND DEVIL DINOSAUR #32 (MARVEL)– This 1stappearance of Princess Fisk is ANOTHER hold at $16 shipped.

MS. MARVEL #31 HANS VARIANT (MARVEL)– Flooding dropped this from $19 last week to $10 shipped this week.  This was probably the hottest book last week and it also fell the hardest.

TEEN TITANS SPECIAL #1 (DC)– CRUSH is still holding this book at $12.  There’s a very large flood of this right now, which is really why this book has been holding at that price.

VENOM #3 1:25 MOLINA VARIANT & 1stPRINT (MARVEL)– The 1:25 Molina variant fell hard this week.  It was sitting at over $100 last week and now sells between $65 to $85.   Flooding has really hurt this variant.  The 1stprint dropped a bit as well to $13 shipped.

HOT – THIS TIME LAST YEAR

NADA – THERE WERE NO HOT BOOKS THIS TIME LAST YEAR.

WARM

IMMORTAL HULK #2 ZAFFINO 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL) – The good news is this variant is selling for $28 shipped.   The bad news is there are copies available to purchase at $25.  We’ll have to see how this does over the week.

UNNATURAL #1 (OF 12) MANARA VARIANT (IMAGE) – Prices have ranged from cover to $15 shipped.  Right now, copies are selling for $11 shipped.  However, there are plenty of copies available for cover price.

COOL

BATMAN #50 (DC) –Man, this was a rough week for DC & Mr. King.  The news leak about no Batman/Catwoman Wedding in this issue caused some major uproar among both fans and comic book store owners.  While it would be nice to ignore all the drama, it did have quite a negative effect on all the various covers. Value tanked across the board.  The super in-demand Ssalefish Middleton Variant set are selling for $75 shipped, which is the exact buy-in cost.  Even the Jim Lee 1:100 sketch is only selling for $65 shipped.  Jim Lee rarely sees one of his high ratio variants sell at nearly half of ratio. It even took at hit at Campbell’s high cost connecting covers.  I feel that this whole event is going to cause many fans to now be super wary of ordering store variants in the near future and will also cause shop owners to think twice about requesting their own cover.  There were still a ton of great covers, so hopefully everyone grabbed covers they liked.  Side note: Strangely, the SDCC variants for Batman #50 are trending well.  The foil is already pre-selling at $50.  The gorgeous Alex Ross 3 cover variant set is pre-selling at $125.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 (MARVEL) – All of these variants are so so and none are selling well.  The 1:500 Hughes Virgin Variant is selling for $390. If it drops any more, this could be worth picking up.  Hughes fans are always hunting hard to find variants.

CATWOMAN #1 ARTGERM VARIANT (DC) – This was absolutely an amazing cover.  However, looking at sales, it looks like shops were ALL over this.  There are many copies available and they’re selling pretty slowly.  It doesn’t help that there’s a SDCC foil variant for this.  I have a feeling people are opting for that instead.  It actually looks better with the trade dressing.

COSMIC GHOST RIDER #1 (OF 5) (MARVEL) – This book is a nice reminder for us all to stay away from a book like this that’s on everyone’s radar.  It's on everyone's radar.  It gets over-ordered and copies flood eBay.  The 1:100 Brooks Virgin is selling for $86, the 1:50 Brooks is selling for $40 and the Hans 1:25 is selling for $16 to $20. I imagine these will start decreasing over the next week.

DEATHSTROKE #33 MATTINA “B” VARIANT (DC) – SUCH a great cover.

ELVIRA MISTRESS OF DARK #1 (DYNAMITE) – There are some great covers for this issue.  My favorite is Elias Chatzoudis’s variant, limited to 500 copies.

GEKIDO #1 (BEYOND COMICS)

HOUSE OF WAXWORK #1 (WAXWORK)

I HATE FAIRYLAND #20 SIENKIEWICZ VARIANT (IMAGE) – Mostly, this variant is selling for cover.  However, it did see one sale at almost $10 shipped.

JIM HENSON BENEATH DARK CRYSTAL #1 (OF 12) (BOOM!)

JOE HILL THE CAPE FALLEN #1 (IDW)

LOWLIFES #1 (IDW) – Mr. Brian Buccellato is a great writer and this is absolutely worth reading.

MARVEL RISING SQUIRREL GIRL MS MARVEL #1 (MARVEL)

ORPHAN BLACK CRAZY SCIENCE #1 (IDW)

PROJECT SUPERPOWERS #0 (DYNAMITE)

QUANTUM AGE FROM WORLD OF BLACK HAMMER #1 (DARK HORSE)

SUBMERGED #1 (OF 4) (VAULT)

SWORD OF AGES SPECIAL EDITION #1 (IDW)

TRANSFORMERS BUMBLEBEE MOVIE PREQUEL #1 (IDW)

Good info as usual. Any chance you can post this on Thursday? Love this segment.

  • I would hold on to cosmic ghost #1 a cover. It’s been sold out everywhere and stores usually have the b cover instead

  • Nice job Matt. Glen Close variant? lol wow

  • Great stuff matt. Weve got a run on half face/ half skull covers lol

  • Matthew King

I’m really surprised about the Black Hammer, as much press and love the 1st title saw… I thought this one was another home run. Black Hammer fans seem to be a very passionate bunch, huh.

Matt what’s the deal with STAR WARS LAST JEDI ADAPTATION #4 REIS 1:25 VARIANT ? Why the heat and the chase ? Is this her 1st appearance ?

The NightWing #46 cover B was an actual pass for me. ( bom bom bom…) I know right ?!? And I’m and Oliver fan. When I saw the Image before FOC it was a must have for me. The wierd thing is the more I saw the book the less I wanted to order it. That never happens to me. It does pair well the The Middleton Bats tho ! 😊

The Cosmic Ghost Rider was not a surprise. Everybody is chasing, none of the Variants on this were a must have for me. I tried to talk myself into the Hans variant but couldn’t pull the trigger on it. The Brooks Virgin was nice but I didn’t want to pony up the money.

Really sucks about the Batman #50. I agree on every point you made. DC really mucked this one up badly and there’s no telling what the aftermath of this debacle will bring. Remember the death of Superman ???

Great write up as usaual Matt ! Thank you so much for your time. I really appreciate it. 👊

Everyone seems upset about the wedding that didn’t happen but they seem to be missing the fact that Batman 50 was awesome AF! Tell me that last page didn’t have you wondering what’s coming.
