First You May Have Missed: Slash(TMNT)

Hello everyone and welcome back. With news of a new ninja turtles reboot coming i felt it was a good time to dive into some mean green speculation. Today we will focus on the 1st appearance of one of my all time favorite turtles, the fifth turtle,(not venus) Slash!

Slash's first comic book appearance was during the Archie comics run in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles adventures #23. Slash did debut a year prior on the beloved TMNT animated series during the episode “Slash the evil turtle from dimension x” in the shows 4th season. His comic origin has him as a stranded inhabitant of a toxic prisoner planet who happens to run into the evil turtle hating Krang. They along with another prisoner agree to team up and quickly overthrow some law men to steal a space ship and head to earth where krang can get revenge and Slash can satisfy his love for palm trees. Once on earth under the direction of Krang slash takes on the turtles. This proves to be a difficult fight for the turtles who have never faced off against one of their kind before with such a diverse set if skills. He sports a black bandana and is a master of many weapons including all those of the turtles, he is also known to use everything from his signature crooked sword to laser guns. Distracted by his quest for palm trees slash walked away from his fight with the turtles without showing any signs of being defeated, but it was not the end for slash. Much later in the series slash returned but this time he traveling through time with the turtles as allies instead of enemies but ultimately he died an honorable death with sacrificing himself and in turn gaining the respect of the other turtles.

Slash although with a constantly altered origin and appearance would later be represented as both an enemy and ally in many TMNT iterations including the 2012 animated series, numerous video games, and the current IDW run. Being a one man wreaking crew that can single-handedly take on all four of the turtles he is one of the most dangerous villains in the TMNT universe with the versions portraying him with above average intelligence being the most deadly. Shredder, Krang, Bebop, and Rockstedy may be the most notable villains for the turtles but with them already brought to the big screen someone like Slash has to be under consideration.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventurers #23 : 1st appearance of Slash. Couldn't find any print run numbers on this book and while it was released in 1991 and based of a popular cartoon it is an Archie comics publication. This book being over 25 years old and most likely always destroyed by kids is extremely hard to find in high-grade but can turn up in bins as it is not a well-known book. Being an “adventures” book based on a beloved cartoon series where the character first debuted on the show (much like Harley Quinn) i am surprised that the price of this book has not seen any real movement with the turtles fan base being so solid. This book has only 3 copies in the CGC census and only 1 of which is a 9.8, i would put this as a must grab in high-grade and an easy pick up in mid grade for $5 or under. Maybe it will pick up one day or maybe not but with so many turtle fans in every generations and no signs of the turtles going anywhere soon i think its only a matter of time before the 5th turtle,anti-hero of the group gets his due.

As always friends of CBSI thank you for reading and remember “It’s better to have first and flip, then to never have first at all” — Valiant Horton

  • Always Thought he debuted in Mighty Mutanimals 9? Looks like I got a new book to look out for.

    • Dale Valiant horton

Alot of people overlook slashes origin in tmnt adventures #23 or even #24 which has slash on the cover. The higher price of MM #9 helps fuel the misconception but it is also a great book to have even though it was released about 2 years later. I have a full MM run but its mid grade.

  • Has anyone seen CGC note any of these 1st appearances from the turtle books? I have never seen one. That may be what’s keeping the demand for these so low.
