1 The Eternals #1

WRITER: Jack Kirby
ARTIST: Jack Kirby
Long speculated that they would appear in the MCU, it now appears that it will happen, and the speculators are buying.  Mid-grade raws will now run you $30-40, NM raws $60+ and a 9.8 just sold for $800+.

2 Amazing Spider-Man #263

  WRITER: Tom DeFalco
ARTIST: Ron Frenz
<palm to forehead>.  Ok people, I give up.  Normie?  Really?  My opinion doesn't matter, just reporting what I see (and I do see the 1st appearance of Khoi Cakes as Spider-Man).  $30 book.

3 Action Comics #1000 Jim Lee Tour Variant

WRITER: Various
ARTIST: Various
A boatload of these have sold in the $50-70 range.  Most of the other variants are underwhelming which is probably helping this one.

4 Vampirella (Vol. 3) #19 Lucio Parrillo Variant

WRITER: Eric Trautmann
ARTIST: Jose Malaga
What once was hot, is now again.  Raws are now selling for $65+.  I've found a lot of the Parrillo Vampi's, but never this one.

5 V Wars #1

WRITER: Jonathan Maberry
ARTIST: Alan Robinson
All versions are selling higher at the moment with the news of a Netflix series.  This was thought to be dead spec, so you should be able to still find some of these floating in dollar bins.

6 WWE #16 Lucas Werneck 1:15 ‘Virgin' Variant

WRITER: Dennis Hopeless
ARTIST: Serg Acuna
Alexa Bliss cover…that's pretty much it.  Oh, and this was likely underordered too.  Currently selling in the $30-40 range.

7 Spawn #283 Image Expo B/W Variant

WRITER: Todd McFarlane
ARTIST: Szymon Kuranski
It seems like there is a new hot Spawn book weekly at this point.  I considered #219, but an $800 9.8 sale was just too high to overlook.

8 East of West #1

WRITER: Jonathan Hickman
ARTIST: Nick Dragotta
Yes, the RRP is way more expensive, but I went with the regular cover here just for the sheer volume that has moved since the Amazon series announcement.  Remember the print run was around 50k on this book, so tread lightly.

9 Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers #9 2nd Print

WRITER: Kyle Higgins
ARTIST: Hendry Prasetya
Keith mentioned the #0 helmet covers were moving well, and people really like these as a completed set, so it should be no surprise that this one has gained heat.  $50-60 hot though?

10 Amazing Spider-Man #797 Mike Mayhew Variant

WRITER: Dan Slott
ARTIST: Stuart Immonen
Take the 1st appearance debate out of the equation and you are left with a cover that people really like.  Like ok with paying $300.  Really though folks, I'm just trying to wrap my head around this Red Goblin thing…please help me!

Amazing Spider-Man #300

WRITER: David Michelinie
ARTIST: Todd McFarlane
I normally reserve this spot for an up and coming type book, but 3 different 9.8 sales today of $2300+ forced me to add it back.

Criminals on the Run #7

WRITER: Unknown
ARTIST: Al McWilliams
Oh boy, we've moved from Good Girl art, to Good Gill art…ba-dum, dumb… Anyways, the same 9.2 copy that sold in 2014 for $1300, just sold for $3300.  Expand your Golden Age palette people!

    Amazing Spider-Man #263 ” Normie? Really?”

That made me laugh so much 😀

As for Red Goblin, I just can’t wrap my head around it either. Specifically the #798 1:100 virgin variant… is it worth it?? If it wasn’t the exact same as the regular cover (minus title and barcode) then definitely, but just because its a 1:100 ‘virgin’ cover, I just dunno how to ascribe a value to it at all.

  • Gary Nusser

I continue to treat Red Goblin as my spec blind spot as the sheer number of variants, not to mention RED herrings (see what I did there) is ridiculous. As I have mentioned many times, this book is starting with a new first issue and new creative team so how much staying power will this Red Goblin really have. And unless they plan on aging normally up, is Marvel really going to leave Normie as the RG? SELL!!

  • Khoi Cakes

My pre-wig days. Good list Ben.

Great job Ben S! Appreciate the hard work and effort you always put into these.

Thanks Ben! I always look forward to the new top 10!!

The 1st time I have had the top 2 I think. Good work!

I really love this site, the speculation, and the discussion …

But the Anti-marvel / Anti-Spider-man takes are creating an echo chamber here. It happened with the Cosmic ghost rider, Weapon H, and is happening with the recent Spidey run.

People like some of marvel’s classic characters.

Spider-man is the most iconic marvel character and still has a massive fan base. He is also easier to start collecting because his silver-age issues are out there.

This has been a fun story line.

Any chance we can relax the, “I just don’t get it” line on every new marvel character, marvel story, or marvel spec?

    • Gary Nusser

So wait a minute. You want us to change our opinions because they don’t agree with yours? I don’t get it. This is a speculation site and as such there are no certainties. Obviously if there is a consensus feeling of throwing stuff against the wall with some concepts, people are going to call that out. By all means continue to buy what you want but ultimately these are only opinions and you have to make your own calls based on your gut.

I’m not trying to say that Gary. I can see how that is interpreted from my post. My apologies.

Again, this is a wonderful site, great community, great speculation, and I have learned a ton. This article is one of my permanent favorites and I look forward to it every week.

I’m just pointing out that there may be a blind spot here. It seems to create a negative loop on Marvel books the last year or so, and they are being dismissed prematurely. This is all I intended to say.

    Great article as usual!!!

    • Ben Steiniger

No worries, I appreciate your perspective. I grew up loving Spidey, so I definitely have no ill will toward the character. Red goblin is just an amalgamation of two existing characters so it’s kind of an unoriginal character.

What I will continue to say is that Marvel has baited it’s fan base on this one. THIS is a 1st appearance, no THIS is, no wait, it’s actually a different character! They have figured out that a confusing 1st appearance of a character is super important to them and will help them sell multiple books. And obviously the general populace are buying them. IMO, this is a very bad thing for the future though. If they, or DC, continue this, it puts a bad taste in collectors’ mouths.

No worries MrE some of us here at are all over this Spidey spec. I went all in pre ordering the Run thinking it would be classic. As a reader, I love it. From a spec perspective Marvel screwed us. And I love Marvel so that’s not an anti Marvel take it’s just reality. It was their prerogative but I will be hesitant to jump on board of this. One. Oh and ps….I’m with you on Cosmic Ghost Rider. Cates is the man. Thanks for reading bud. Fair comment.

Ben…….Great job as always. Very accurate market depiction. YTM

Three ASM’s on the Top (12) this week. Damn. And it easily could have been four. The 700 Ditko variant had multiple $2000+ sales the last couple of weeks as well. Perhaps renewed interest thanks to the upcoming ASM 700?

That ASM 300 is a beast by the way.

I have been hoarding Eternals for years now, finally I may have actually a spec win. Travis-1 Speculation- too many copies of Youngblood 1 too count. Great list and always keeps me checking the $1 boxes.

Is that Mayhew cover a store variant or Con?

  • Avatar

The mayhew was a store variant limited to 600 copies. He has done a couple of homages since then with Venom 1 and I think with the recent wedding issue on X-Men. He really does a great job overall. He is a guy to watch on these homage covers…

I agree John. I preordered a lot of the ratio sets, and then Marvel quadrupled the print run …. Ah well :).

Ixandantilus Thanks for the heads up on he Jim Lee tour Variant! I thought I missed out on it but grabbed one yesterday before they sold out again.

The whole red goblin and cosmic ghost rider are both a little dumb for the prices being paid imo. Just recency bias at its best
