Variant Heat Check for 3/27/18

Walking Dead #1 Museum Edition Variant

HEAT CHECK STATUS: radioactive

Apparently these super rare museum editions came out shortly after the Walking Dead #1 hit the shelves for a Fear Fest Horror Con that folded before these books could make it out to daylight. One person found a few copies collecting dust, bought them up, then began selling raw copies for $2-300. Then another person decided to grade them PGX, and has been getting over $1600.

***Update – I have been told by a very reliable source that these are unauthorized fakes. Buyer Beware (and shame on you PGX).***

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #25 Wondercon Variant

HEAT CHECK STATUS: pepperpepperpepperpepper

Handed out at a panel at Wondercon, this book has seen some odd sales between $50 and $250. There was more than one sale at the $250 price from different sellers, which tells me that it wasn’t a fluke.

Adventure Comics #515 1:25 Bermejo Variant

HEAT CHECK STATUS: pepperpepperpepperpepper

One of the best covers to come out of the DC 75th variants, this masterpiece by the underrated Lee Bermejo is a ghost. Everyone knows Darkseid is coming to the big screen, and a raw brought in $225, while a CGC 9.8 sold for $500.

Amazing Spider-man #569 1:10 Granov Variant

HEAT CHECK STATUS: pepperpepperpepper

Talk about a variant with a massive print run. These are a dime a dozen, and raw copies are stuck in the mud selling for around $50-60. What’s interesting though is that 9.8 copies are creeping up and recently broke the $200 barrier. Make sure you are buying the absolute best copy of this book or you’re probably getting what you paid for.

Note: Variants appearing in the Top 10 will not appear on this list due to contractual obligations.

Really glad you guys clarified that that walking dead book is a total fraud. Those counterfeit abominations should be given no legitimacy whatsoever. In fact, I would even suggest pulling this article altogether and redoing it with a different book on there.

On another note, a 9.4 copy of Uncanny X men 510 partial sketch just sold for $5,000 a couple days ago. That’s easily the most notable public sale of a variant this past week.

I decided to leave the WD book on there to make people aware that it is a fake and get the word out there. People are getting ripped off for big money by 2 sellers. Hopefully some of those people read this (or hear about it) and demand a refund.

      • Ben C

Yeah agreed, much better to keep the awareness out there for folks. Pulling the article and replacing with another book is a dangerous game. Glad you kept it and like you said, I hope more folks see this and word spreads that this was not a real release.

        Great job Keith!

It’s getting harder and harder to find ASM 569 in 9.8s. That dark cover shows everything!

Idk if I am the only person trying to put together a complete Adventure comics run but I am pretty sure I’m in a very small group of people who really love to collect Adventure comics and am trying to to collect as many as possible. So that 515 variant is the big modern to find and I need one. Wish it wasn’t such a ghost.

we all have our ghosts to chase! Good luck on your hunt.

Bermejo based his Adventures DC 75th anniversary variant after these two originals.. cheaper better/cooler looking alternatives… those 75th variants are mainly homages to preexisting classic covers

Legion of Super-Heroes 294 (I love this cover so much)

Legion of Super-Heroes Great Darkness Saga TPB

      • Avatar

Agreed! That Legion #294 cover is something special. And can be had for just a few bucks!! Also part of one of the definitive Darkseid stories, so its a classic issue too. I guess because its the Legion of Super Heroes, its more or less forgotten about?

Never was aware of the TPB cover until I read your post. Interesting! I think they should have stuck with the #294 cover though. Its by far the better of the two.

That Granov Venom cover is amazing. One of my favorite Venom covers. Keep an eye on the two Thunderbolts vol.1 venom variants ( Jock and Yu.) Those had a much lower print run and could be the next ones to blow up. The Jock variant is still cheap and has an all black cover.

That WD book is suspect as HELL. I sincerely doubt Image would authorize ANY edition (at that time) without their logo being at least present on the back cover.

PLUS: of the pictures I’ve seen, the cropped section (of the original cover) is printed far darker than the original – like it was done on an improperly calibrated laser-jet.

IF it turns out to be legit, it’s still a shoddy piece of work.

P.S. I’ve PM’d one of the creators of the series to see if they have any insight – I truly hope I’m wrong if only for those poor b@stards who’ve paid insane money for a bootleg photocopy.

I’m glad you left the WD book in. Hopefully word will get around.

Nice, I have that Adventure Comics #515

  • Avatar

I wondered why I couldn’t find any legit references to that “museum edition” … I passed because if that.

  • Avatar

Hey guys. If I end up getting that Adventure Comics #515 variant sketched and autographed by Lee with CGC, what could it end being worth??

    • Keith S.

TBH a book is only worth what someone else is wanting to pay for it, especially when you are talking about SS and sketched market. The more the niche the market, the smaller that market gets.
