The Wednesday One – 03/14

wednesday

Welcome to the night before Wednesday One! 3/14

This week should be lighter than last week and is low on the flips. I'm okay with this as last week was too big. Let see what this week has to offer.

Flipdipskys

Barbarella #4 Cover H Incentive Stephanie Hans Virgin Cover 1:30?

A sweet cover and seems to be a ghost so far. $15 or less is probably a great grab. I might pay a bit more for a nm+ copy if for PC. I'm curious how many show up on Wed and how much demand there is for it. Almost the “One”, but I don't think it will have a lot of movement.

Scooby Apocalypse #23 Cover B Variant Ben Oliver Cover

This is a cool cover, but it seems to be hotter than just a cool cover. Might be a real quick flip as I suspect the market will flood Wednesday.

Cool Covers

Action Comics Vol 2 #999 Cover B Variant Kaare Andrews Cover

Andrew is really doing a great job with the recent action run.

Justice League Of America Vol 5 #26 Cover B Variant Francesco Mattina Cover

I like it, but is there too much Mattina? Some these are hit or miss.

Jim Hensons Power Of The Dark Crystal #12 Cover B Variant Sana Takeda Subscription Cover

The last of the maxi run and of these amazing Sana covers.

Rockos Modern Life Vol 2 #4 Cover B Variant Miguel Mercado Subscription Cover

I like these postmodernism(?) style covers.

Batgirl And The Birds Of Prey #20 Cover A Regular Terry Dodson & Rachel Dodson Cover

I really like this Dodson.

Batgirl And The Birds Of Prey #20 Cover B Variant Adam Hughes Cover

Birds winning the week with 2 great covers. This Huges is another great cover.

Suicide Squad Vol 4 #37 Cover B Variant Andrea Sorrentino Cover

Really cool color tone.

Supergirl Vol 7 #19 Cover B Variant Stanley Artgerm Lau Cover

Not my favorite SG Artgerm cover, but still good.

Wonder Woman Vol 5 #42 Cover B Variant Jenny Frison Cover

A good, not great Frison. Another for the collection though.

Vampironica #1 Cover D Variant Djibril Morrissette-Phan Cover

I'm not loving it, but many are. Soudsn liek a fun title.

Skip it

 Dry County #1

Nothing about this book seems enticing. Everything I read says to avoid.

Read it

Flash Vol 5 #42 Cover B Variant David Finch & Danny Miki Cover

Always dig some Flash.

Mister Miracle Vol 4 #7 Cover B Variant Mitch Gerads Cover

This is a great read and is at the top of my pile.

Avengers Vol 6 #684

These usually are somewhat flip worthy, but I think some of the heat has gone from the series. I am liking it so far. Curious what Hulk does.

 Doctor Strange Vol 4 #387

Cates is writing and I am reading.

Slots #6

I still need to catch up, but my friend raves about it. It is one of his top reads while drinking a beer.

VS #2 Cover C Variant Esad Ribic Virgin Wraparound Cover

VS #1 was a good start.

 Weapon X Vol 3 #15

I like all the Wolverine style characters.

Detective Comics Vol 2 #976 Cover B Variant Rafael Albuquerque Cover

Great cover and a solid pull book.

All-New Wolverine #32 – Solid not amazing.

Old Man Logan Vol 2 #36 Cover A Regular Mike Deodato Jr Cover – Also good.

Ghost Money #8 – This is interesting. I'm still on it.

Infidel #1 – Weird premie horror book. I might pass.

Betrothed #1 – Sounds interesting, I think I'll give it a try.

New Mutants Dead Souls #1 – Recommended to me as a read and maybe spec potential. Marvel is adding new peeps left and right. I'll flip thru it at the LCS.

Notes

  • Thanos Vol 2 #14 Cover D 3rd Ptg Variant Geoff Shaw Cover
  • 3x Marvel TB $1 reprints:
  • True Believers Venom Carnage #1
  • True Believers Venom Lethal Protector #1
  • True Believers Venom Shiver #1
  • Valiant high ratio: Ninjak vs The Valiant Universe #3 Cover E Incentive Juan Jose Ryp Variant Cover – If you can get it for a good price these seem to be good flips.
  • CBLDF Defender Vol 3 #1 – FREE – can't beat free
  • Ducktales Vol 4 #7 Cover C Incentive Blueprint Character-Focused Variant – I'm not a fan of this cover as it has a blah character, but it is one to note. Some folks are collecting the set.

Bonus look back – how did last week do a week later?

How did last week's spec end up doing? We take a look at last week's predictions and see if we did OK one week later!!!

(Last week's spec will be quoted like this. What it really did will look like this.)

Comic Title –  Prediction. Reality.

Amazing Spider-Man Vol 4 #797 Cover A Regular Alex Ross Cover – None given – Cover or right over cover.

Amazing Spider-Man Vol 4 #797 Cover E Incentive Aaron Kuder Young Guns Variant Cover – None given – ~$15-20 on average.

Amazing Spider-Man Vol 4 #795 Cover C 2nd Ptg Variant Mike Hawthorne Cover – None given – $8-10.

Amazing Spider-Man Vol 4 #797 Cover D Incentive Ed McGuinness Design Variant – If you can get this one at or right over cover there might be a flip in it. – ~$15-20 on average.

Avengers Vol 6 #683 Cover A Regular Mark Brooks Cover None given – Going for cover.

True Believers Venom vs Spider-Man #1 – usually go for $2-3 anyway long term – Going for as much as $5 an issue already, wow.

Call Of The Suicide Forest #2 Cover B Incentive Pasqual Ferry Variant Cover – None given – None of the variant sold recently and very few of the regular cover.

Rick And Morty Presents The Vindicators #1 Cover A Regular CJ Cannon & Nick Filardi Cover – None given – Going for ~double cover. The con variant is getting $$, but this might grow over time. I blanked while at my lcs and missed it.

Spider King #1 Cover C Incentive Skottie Young Variant Cover – I totally missed this – This is getting $25 on average some around $35. I missed out. Can't win em all.

Wrap up

A good light week which I am happy about. No real “One,” but I like that Hans cover. I am going to go light and only grab a few books more reads than anything else. I rushed thru this so please let me know if I missed anything. What are you grabbing this week? Let me know and as always thanks for reading.

  • I am with you – nice to have a week to breath a little. Great write up as always. Your article is always the pulse of the marketplace! Thanks again for all the time and effort!

  • Dale Valiant horton

Almost called it a night but when this article popped up i knew i couldn’t sleep soundly until combing through it. Great stuff. That doctor strange cover is amazing. I know i will be looking for the lackluster ducktales variant tommorow just for set completion purposes.

I thought about adding the DT variant, but I figured the character on it was blah and most wouldn’t care. Def grab if you are working on the set.

  • Great overview as always — it’s become my Tuesday nitecap! Since we now know that the Red Goblin’s first appearance will be #798, does that mean that the first non-retailer specialty cover appearance is Amazing Spider-Man #797 Ed McGuinness Design Variant (yeah, I know that’s a lot of qualifiers!)?
Thanks again for all you do for us!

  • Good to know your human — “blanked out while at the store” ,, regardless great write up

    • Lebednik

That happens too often lol. Several times I have bought a book I already had and I forget books all the time. That was half the reason I started writing this was basically to make a list for myself. I usually look this up while I’m in the store to remind myself, but even then I still forget.

  • ender6988

Great article. Look forward to this every week.

  • dpiercy

You always do such a great job with these. ?And I got a sorta-shout out on Slots. ?

  • Sandy Sutherland

Great article. I agree with the Dodson cover on Birds of Prey it is pretty awesome. I also like Trinity 19 variant this week, the beauthy virgin warp around and Deadly Class cover B which are awesome.

Also the Supergirl regular cover is also a nice fun looking cover.

  • Awesome write up, really appreciate your dedication to helping us out. I have to look for this on Tuesday night, I didn’t realize you publish this on Tuesday night. Again, THANK YOU !!!

  • Today I’ll be looking for 1 book …. because I already have birds of prey and supergirl copies on reserve at the LCS the only book I am really needing is that Vampironica lol hopefully I’ll find it . … good luck everyone else. Happy hunting!

    • Well no Venpironica variant and all the cover As had damage so I didn’t get that book at all but I did get the only Hughes cover for birds of prey that my store got…. even though they tried to order me 2 so it must have got allocated or something but it’s a 9.8 and got a cover a too and 3 Artgerm supergirls the only nice copy of JLA Mattina and that awesome she hulk cover I forgot last week and a few others. So I’m happy overall.

      • I discovered today that there are some store exclusive Vampironica covers. A nice ASM 101 homage caught my eye. Not sure how many are out there, but I found 3 which brings the total number of different covers to at least 8.

I was surprised by how good Afterlife with Archie and Sabrina turned out. Very much looking forward to reading Vampironica tonight.

      • Lebednik

nice. I think that Vamp will be easy to find online. If it is going for over cover it will be back down within a week I think.

        • Actually when looking for one of the red Vampironica online I Discovered the Messafera Variant which is a store exclusive which I usually hate but this one is so beautiful I had to have it. I think it’s the best cover by far and for 10$+ 5 shipping it was a priced well too.

          • Apparently that Massafera does release until next week but is limited to only 500! Glad I got one surprised I didn’t hear about this one somehow because it’s amazing. May make a post in the variant group to let others know about it. I got my copy already lol.

          • Or maybe I’ll wait till I have it in hand then put it on the main page, with only 500 copies could be a real spec win ….. anyone who really is interested will find this I suppose….

          • Lebednik

Im gonna check it out. thx

  • Snagged Scooby and Vampironica. They really are both fantastic covers in person, the colors pop like crazy.
