The Wednesday One – 2/28

wednesday

Welcome to the night before Wednesday One! 2/28

This week has a lot of potential for some flips, but also a few good covers and reads. I am going to be a Wednesday warrior for sure as there are a few I want minty copies of for my PC.

Flipdipskys

Avengers Vol 6 #682 Cover A Regular Mark Brooks Cover

Brooks continues his great run. These sell out, but recently they seem to be staying around cover. Many places are limiting 1 per person. I think it maybe goes for double cover Wednesday. Also, I hear there is a “secret variant” 1:7 as I understand it where Hawkeye has a helmet. The secret one may heat up to double or triple cover price. (Correction. I had it backward. Helmet on is the regular cover. Thx Enrique)

Spawn #283 Cover A Regular Francesco Mattina (B cover is B&W of the same cover)

This was a last minute change. It is a fantastic cover. I'm def going to grab a nm+ set for the old PC. These are pre-selling for a crazy amount of money. I wouldn't pay over cover as this isn't a key, just a cool cover. It has the potential for a Wednesday flip for sure. I think sets will flip for $15-20 with undercutting on Wednesday.

Black Panther Vol 6 #170 Cover D Incentive Marco Checchetto Young Guns Variant Cover

I love these Young guns almost virgin variants and this one is no exception. This Checchetto has a different color tone than normal that I am digging it big time. These seem to have decent size print runs, but have a lot of movement. I think $10-15 is what they will sell for. Try to get at or right over cover.

All-New Wolverine #31 Cover B Variant Hulk Smash Cover

This isn't a great 181 homage, but it seems to have a little heat. 181 Homages always seem to do well long term though. I'm going to grab a few for long-term flips. I think it goes a few dollars over cover, but not quite double cover Wednesday.

Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man #300 Cover F Incentive Alex Ross Variant

Ross is boss and this cover is no exception. I think the print run will be largish, but it seems demand for this cover is high. Presales as high as $95, but it seems to have calmed down to ~$35-40ish. Curious if there will be a flood tomorrow and undercutting. I think it stays around $35 personally.

 Thanos Vol 2 #16

Origin was teased, but spoilers show there is a little more. It is already heating up. Mostly going for double cover. I think it has a chance to get up to $15.

X-Men Blue #22 Cover B Incentive David Nakayama Poison X Variant

These sold out quickly and the only reason seems to be scarcity. These are selling over $100 already and 1 sold for $180 which is bonkers. Is there something about this I don't know? Let me know if there is.

Amazing Cerebus #1

I don't dig on these but I love the caption. These are selling out and maybe a ghost. Seems to be going for double cover. ASM 300 swipes are usually popular anyway. I think it stays cover to double cover long term.

Jim Hensons Labyrinth #1 Cover E Incentive Bill Sienkiewicz Virgin Variant

I'm a Bill fan, but this doesn't do it for me. Presales are all over the place. Mostly ~$50, but hard to say. Should be rare as who orders 50 of these. I think it sits around $50.

Ducktales Vol 4 #6 Cover C Incentive Blueprint Character-Focused Variant Cover

I'm not a believer, but I know a lot of people are. Hard to say what these are going for. I couldn't really find any sales except 1. I think people are hording these.

Cool Covers

Batgirl Vol 5 #20 Cover B Variant Joshua Middleton Cover

I love the slightly muted colors. One of the better Middletons in my eyes.

Mera Queen Of Atlantis #1 Cover B Variant Stanley Artgerm Lau Cover

Artgerm is on fire. This one is only good somehow compared to some of his other recent covers. A PC grab for sure.

Iron Maiden Legacy Of The Beast #3 Cover C?

This cover is metal and I dig it.

Grimm Fairy Tales Presents Dance Of The Dead #4 Cover D Meguro

I collect these, but they never gain steam. This one is good, not great compared to the others imo.

Wonder Woman Vol 5 #41 Cover B Variant Jenny Frison Cover

I can feel the sensuality in this cover. One of my fav Frisons.

Skip it

Nothing really to say “heck no” to.

Read it

Flash Vol 5 #41 Cover B Variant Howard Porter Cover

Flash is consistent and I like this cover.

 Darth Vader Vol 2 #12

Vader and Star Wars are 2 of the better Marvel books right now. This cover is pretty good also.

Doctor Strange Vol 4 #386

I'm in as long as Cates is on it.

Detective Comics Vol 2 #975 Cover B Variant Rafael Albuquerque Cover

This cover is good and Tec is solid.

Moon Knight Vol 8 #192

I hear good things and I started catching up recently, so far I'm liking it.

Action Comics Vol 2 #998 Cover B Variant Kaare Andrews Cover –

Supes is good and the cover is okay. The last one was much better.

Royal City #10 – I really like this book and can't wait to read this one.

Void Trip #4 – I'm behind and plan on catching up.

Edit: Missed Redneck #10 and Saga #49 both are staples- (Thx Nate)

Notes

  • Thanos Vol 2 #15 Cover B 2nd Ptg – If you need a cheap reading copy.
  • X-O Manowar Vol 4 #12 Cover E Incentive Ben Oliver X-O Manowar Icon Variant Cover – Big ratio Valiant. These flip if you can find em.
  • Batman White Knight #3 Cover D 3rd Ptg Variant Sean Murphy Cover – For those that are catching up on the series.
  • (edit) Amazing Spider-Man Vol 4 #794 Cover C 2nd Ptg – If you missed out. Also sold out in many places.

Bonus look back – how did last week do a week later?

How did last week's spec end up doing? We take a look at last week's predictions and see if we did OK one week later!!!

(Last week's spec will be quoted like this. What it really did will look like this.)

Ice Cream Man #2 –  I’m still hesitant with issue #2. – Double cover at best it seems.

Venom Vol 3 #162 Cover B Incentive Dave Johnson Poison X Variant Cover –  Seems if you can get one for $25 or less it should be a good flip. I think if there is nothing special undercutters will drop it down to $35-40. Seems like this one died out. Few sales around $50 but there is a bin for $35 sitting. Only a few moved.

Avengers Vol 6 #681 Cover A Regular Mark Brooks Cover – may grab some heat – All over. Cover to 3x cover. The 1:25 doesn't seem to be grabbing any heat.

Doctor Strange Damnation #1 Cover G Incentive Javier Garron Young Guns Variant – seem to be plentiful, but they move. I say try to get around cover price. – These go for ~$10

Doctor Strange Damnation #1 Cover F 1:50 Incentive Phil Noto Variant –  knowing my luck it will be hot for no reason other than Cates. Presales are under $50 no real spec given. None sold all week. Some $25 some $50. I think I might get one if I can find one around $25 in nm+.

Cool cover and skip look back. Double Bonus.

Amazing Spider-Man Vol 4 #796 –  Some are preselling for $15. I see some are going for cover also. I say pay cover and maybe it will flip based on demand, but I wouldn’t bank on it. Really I expect this to drop like a rock. I thought it would be back down to cover and I was off. They are going for ~$15 shipped.

Wrap up

Lots of juicy spec to chase. I will be all over a few of them for sure. It isn't even Wednesday yet and I feel worn out. I hope tomorrow gives me a mid-week boost. What are Y'all jamming on this week? Did I miss anything (let me know if I did with that 1:50 X-Men)? Let me know what you think about this week in general. It seems like it is a little much. As always thanks for reading!

  • 2018 has been spec madness and it starts with all those F5’s at MyComicShop at 6PM on Tuesday night. There is definite money to be made if you can get copies of the books, but with the hobby seemingly at an all time high of spec, I wonder – given that so many collectors are keeping multiple copies, bagging and boarding is more common to protect books, is there really long term value in things with typical Marvel/DC print runs of something like Superman, Batman, ASM, etc.? I’m sure 1st apps will always remain valuable and something with super small print runs that take people by surprise as well (TWD for example), but am I way off in thinking it is the pre-90s books that are the better investment long term? I’m trying to get things like ASM and Thanos for the flip but then turning that money into looking at older books like say ASM 298/299, Secret Wars 8, Infinity Gauntlet 1 and other old “keys”. While still plentiful, I think some of those have bigger potential to be a NM 98. What say you?

    • Lebednik

I think there is some long-term value in moderns, especially in high-grade Marvel as they use what must be the worst paper and inks ever currently. It is hard to get nm+ out of the Diamond box. I do think many people do take care of their books, but when I go to the LCS most of what I see are people that just read comics. They aren’t making sure they stay nm+. Print runs for action, bats, and asm are high but not crazy high. Non-keys won’t ever be worth anything, but 80s key books in high grade def have potential to get bigger, but I think the main thing is what is done with the movies. They seem to be the only thing that really drives the big gains. TV spec really doesn’t do it. Classics will always have constant gains. Bottom line, spec the books that have what the movies do for big gains. Classic keys will mostly consistently rise. My $0.02

    • The best advice, is to buy what you like and only what you like, nothing more nothing less..

      -Old comic book dealer proverb.

it’s good for the heart and spirit

  • Hats off Adam once again. Jesus, what started off as a relatively light week has turned up the heat a tad. Thanks as always for your efforts on this must read column

  • Great work as always, man. Stoked to have nabbed a copy of the Ross Spidey 1:50 for fairly cheap, I’m gonna squirrel that away until the end of time. Also can’t wait to read Thanos. All hail Cates, IMHO

  • Earlybird

Trying to cut down to my pull list and the one MUST have a month, but every time I read this article, it all goes out the window and I end up with a mass of comics,
thanks Adam, truly though, great work and thanks for inspiring me to keep hunting every week.

  • UltraMaximus

Ok, let me start off by saying, HOME RUN once again Adam!
Let me continue by going through the paces with you.

X-Men Blue #22 1:50. Poison X crossover, the last variant in the story as the last chapter in Venom’s next issue will be a regular cover only. I feel the F.O.M.O. people who missed out on #21 1:50 are trying to chase/hype this one a bit. I’d be in at or below ratio, passing on anything above that as I do not see this cover having the legs of 21. The Hans #21 variant was for sure the one to get by cover alone. I think too it’s a sign of panic since a few pre-sales for #22 that people reported when a few web sites “SOLD OUT” last week caused alarms, but a pre-release date “sell out” doth not make a good spec in the age of the almighty eBay, but I have been wrong before. (See ASM #795 Hulk variant WTF!?!?!? on that one) I see 22 1:50 having a fire start to a fizzle finish.

Spawn was tough to track down prior to release. Savvy Spawn fans started locking in copies once the heat was on and the general public was notified. Not on my regular pull list so I did not have a pre-order in anywhere and the copies I got pulled for me Tuesday may go to a subscriber 1st so nothing is a guarantee. WAY under-ordered for shelves where I live, and the Martina fans are on the hunt for these. I hope we have a future for Mattina doing a lot more Spawn stuff. This cover is just insane looking!

Thanos. Delivers. If you aren’t reading this book or even just buying it, you are wrong.

Mera #1 cover B is WHOA. Black Rob level WHOA.

I agree with all the reads, even though I won’t be reading them all.

Thanks again Adam, keep up the amazing work!

  • Great write up as always. I look forward to this every week!

  • Thanks for the heads-up on the Avengers cover, Adam. Got a couple sets of the Brooks’ covers going so need to be on the lookout for that variant.

Great job; definite must-read before heading to the LCS every week!

    Mahalo!

  • Hi everyone. This is my first post. Happy to join the conversation. Not much of a selection in my lcs. Ordered Avengers but it didn’t come. Luckily managed to find a copy of 682 online for 24p more lol. For a guy who collected just DC at the start, I seem to now be getting mostly Marvel lol. I managed to grab a couple of Thanos 16 copies and a Thanos 15 2nd print. Also added a Ice Cream Man 1 2nd print to got with my ICM 1 + 2. I also never thought I would get into Variants. My lcs never seems to have any so maybe I cant even if I want to…

  • Wow didn’t expect to be such a crazy day but should be fun gonna kinda wing this one too…. have a small cgc submission ready to go Friday so I’m leaving the option open to throw the right book in and bump the mg reg cover until later if I find the right book in 9.8 so we’ll see what happens… got some crazy weather here too so I gotta leave early plus I’m working with 50$ Max budget today since payday is this Friday so I’ll have to see what my options are may go for a bunch of cover priced books or one big variant and a couple others idk for sure yet but I’ll update with what I get.
    Good luck to everyone!!!

  • Also what is the ratio on that Alex Ross Spidey?

    • Nevermind no Spidey covers at all that I was interested in just the Scotty young var and the reg cover. So I just passed not a huge Spidey fan anyway I’m a bigger Alex Ross fan. But I scored none the less. Both Spawn covers the bp chechetto … 2 copies of Mera 1 Artgerm…. both versions of the avengers brooks cover… and a variant for Lock Jaw 1 …. the Chechetto was 10 the rest were cover …. might have forgot one too ….not sure cuz my bag is sealed til I get home in case it rains again. Will post my haul later on today I think. If not today than tomorrow for sure.

  • Thanos #17 Frankie’s Variant is a nice homage.
