HOT 10 COMICS

1TheMighty Thor #700 Adam Hughes 1:100 Variant

WRITER: Jason Aaron
ARTIST: Various
No brainer this week.  Hughes, Hela, 1:100 and selling for $175+.  Oh, did anyone at Marvel forget to mention that they killed this book by allowing the retailers with store variants to cash in on this too?  Pics of those dealers with 50 copies is sickening.  Thanks for nothing Marvel….

2 Avengers NGEn #1

 WRITER: Fabian Nicieza
ARTIST: Sean Chen
Recalled because of Marvel getting a few complaints that it looked bad because of Northrop Grumman being a defense contractor.  Hey, Marvel!  Everyone else has complained about your poor writing for years and you haven't changed, why start now?

3 Gambit #1 Gold Variant

WRITER: Howard Mackie
ARTIST: Lee Weeks
7 months ago, 9.8's were selling for around $60.  Raws are now over $100, a 9.6 sold for $160 and a 9.8 sold for mid $300's.  Gambit was always one of my favorite characters, but I'm still not sold on a solo Gambit movie.

4 Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 3) #4

WRITER: Dan Slott
ARTIST: Humberto Ramos
What a crazy last 2 months for this book.  9.8's had dipped down to around $40, went up to around $90 for a couple of days, back down to the mid $40's and are now back up to $90 again.  I still think that Silk could be a great long term character for the Spidey fans.

5 Watchmen #1

WRITER: Alan Moore
ARTIST: Dave Gibbons
Trey mentioned this on the podcast a few weeks back.  A year ago, this was a mid $200 9.8 book.  Now it is basically double that.  Please DC, do not let me down with adding them into the DCU…think of all the possibilities with these characters.

6 Detective Comics #880

WRITER: Scott Snyder
ARTIST: Jock
Fine, bully me to get this book back on the list.  Another $475 9.8 sale has this book becoming a modern day must have.  Just as awesome of a cover is #871, just sayin'.

7 Marvel Age #41

WRITER: Various
ARTIST: Various
After a couple sales over $100, the market flooded and the price has settled back into the $30-40 range. Cover art by Janet Jackson–nevermind, I'm not going to date myself with a ‘nasty' joke.

8 Marvel Graphic Novel #4

WRITER: Chris Claremont
ARTIST: Bob McLeod
The New Mutants trailer appears to be well received.  9.8 sale now at $1000 and 9.6 at $400.  The more you look at what Claremont contributed to the comic industry…..

9 Marvel Legacy #1 Art Adams NYCC Partial Sketch Variant

WRITER: Jason Aaron
ARTIST: Various
Yes, I could have included Spider-Gwen #16 variant here as it is selling well over $300, but this particular book has increased from around $70 to over $100 since last list.  Besides, I want to see new arguments this week 🙂

10 Amazing Spider-Man #692 1970's Variant

WRITER: Dan Slott
ARTIST: Humberto Ramos
Not an easy book to find, this gorgeous cover has moved from around $40 up to around $100.  Like seriously, this cover is magnificent.

J. Scott Campbell ‘Remarqued' Variants

WRITER: Various
ARTIST: Various
JSC gives a lucky few of these away with his store variants and those that get them are sitting on a stack.  It's a great gesture and other artists should be taking note on why Campbell is so successful.  Oh, and the official British pronunciation has the second ‘r' silent–say it right fanboy!

Camp Comics

WRITER: Various
ARTIST: Various
This 3 issue series from 1942 is so hard to come by, that a bound VG set sold for almost $1800 recently.  These are chock full of good girl, pin-ups and Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny!

Considering how much and how long that Thor 700 book was hyped, I’m disappointed to see it selling at or below pre-sales.

Where can I find the pics of the dealers with 50 copies? I have a few contacts I want to bring this up to. Thx in advance.

Great work as always guys. My LCS was selling the Thor 700 1:100 for $50! I missed it by an hour . So choked. I love the cover, but I can’t pay $175+ when there is so many out there .

Much improved list from last week. Solid sales on books in the top ten and a good mixture.

I see it now. Insane. Thanks.

Does that Camp Comics book really show a sliver of side-butt?

I’ve been noticing that trend with more and more big variants lately. Retailers get 5,000 copies of a store exclusive made which qualifies them for 100 1:50s or 50 1:100s they sell the hot variants for big bucks then instead of having the same regular cover that no o e wants they have an exclusive variant they sell for 2-3x cover and since they probably will more than their money back selling the hot incentive the exclusives are all profit. Great system for those who play that game but as a collector I wish marvel would tighten up the rules and make retailers order the regular cover to qualify for variants. It would keep the market from getting flooded and being controlled by a few retailers who have a high stock of a desired book. This also puts a cap on the value of certain variants because they become almost too available. And you really have to wait until stocks are depleted to see who a variant performs and by them buyers may have lost interest causing the value to drop or perhaps the opposite happens but you still have to wait until supplies dry up in either case. Another variant this occurred with was the edge of venomverse 1:50 Mattina Teaser variant. The sellers who went big on that still have some in stock and it’s value has effectively been capped at thier selling price. I liked that variant and still do but I’m trying to notice this trend and avoid spending too much on books that are being spec’ d on by huge retailers in this way. I just think these kinds of books may print runs that even exceed what comichron may suggest and therefore may not hold value as well as their ratio may imply. Just some food for thought.

Remarque – why pronounce a French word the way the Brits do?

  • Avatar

Just so I understand – that Marvel Age is there because of who created the cover? Not due to some first appearance in an article inside the book?

  • Avatar

Yeah, I’m not getting why Marvel Age #41 is worth anything more than cover price?? Please someone fill me in. I know I have a copy of it in one of the boxes here.

its funny that people get so upset over one sites top 10, this is just an option of what is hot! not a guide to follow because of people trying to buy all the top 10 listings. I do have to say that the shop owners are jacking prices so high that its becoming so hard to be a collector. if mommy and daddy aren’t rich, its becoming a joke to say I collect comics. 3.99 per comic is so high, you really cant get want you want without spending 50.00 for 8 comics. throw in variants and that cost is more than one can spend and pay bills. now this cancer trend is at Ebay stores, prospecting on future prices have driven prices way over any type of listing prices.

I was just writing about how expensive it’s getting just to keep up with reading the book I want. Not to mention spec books, PC books and variants. It’s a. Try delicate balancing act to invest ones money wisely. What really helps me is I live in close proximity to a used record store and two used book stores that have got stocks of books for a 1 or 2 each usually and you’d be surprised what I’ve pulled out of there over the years. Got a minty Power girl 27, got a not quite a minty Batgirl 12 Artgerm for 2 and 1$ respectively. Uncanny X-men 158 in about a 9.4 think that was 3$. Giant size x-men #2 for a buck, so many others I can’t even fathom listing them all and I write pretty damn fast and all from a phone mind you. 😀 Just in the last few days I found a Batman: Gotham Adventures 45 in about a 9.2-9.4 that looks like a 9.8 from the front for 2 bucks. So amazing deals are still out there. Maybe I can inspire some others to go out and dig because you really never now what you will find. I find variants too but it’s actually very rare to find incentives from the big two than other keys 1:25 and up in the wild are very rare right now in my experience.

How many top 10 sites exist? I only know of this one. I think CBSI does a good job even if sometimes I am left scratching my head. I used to love the Wizard Magazine top 10 but always felt a month was to long to wait.

I found the Spiderman variant in the dollar bins at my local 2nd and Charles earlier today!
