Variant Heat Check for 8/22/17

Uncanny X-men #297 Pressman Variant

HEAT CHECK STATUS: pepperpepperpepperpepper

I don’t really follow Pressman variants too much, but this is the rarest of the bunch and always seems to fetch good money. Not bad for a free throw in to a board game!

Harbinger #3 1:20 Zircher Variant

HEAT CHECK STATUS: pepperpepperpepperpepper

Another super hard to find Valiant variant that’s over triple digits, this book contains the first appearance of Livewire (no, not the DC villain). She is getting some exposure from her new series Secret Weapons.

Power Girl #2 Hughes Variant

HEAT CHECK STATUS: pepperpepperpepper

Definitely less plentiful than issue #1 Hughes A cover, this B cover has rose up and is becoming a $50 bill.

Legionnaires #16 DC Universe Variant

HEAT CHECK STATUS: pepperpepperpepper

Going back to well with Hughes, this is the DC Universe variant I’ll be hunting down.

Batman The Shadow #5 Mattina Variant

Drops this week!

Mattina is on fire right now!

Note: Variants appearing in the Top 10 will not appear on this list due to contractual obligations.

There are 4 pressman variants. 297 is the rarest of the 4 because you had to send in a coupon for it. It did not physically come with the game like the other 3.

I could have sworn I sent in a coupon for #303, which I was surprised to get since the variant was supposed to be a silver version of X-Men #11 (last Jim Lee issue).

There’s a disproportionate amount of Hughes featured on this site. I know his stuff is mostly dollar bin material, readily available, and therefore very easy to push and spec, but come on, let’s mix it up a little.

Speaking of which, a 9.8 copy of an Amazing Spider-man 667 Dell’otto variant just sold for $10,000 a couple of days ago on ebay. That’s a first for a modern variant and is eyeball melting. Very surprised to not see that on a list like this, especially since a price like that paid for a variant is unprecedented

you’re right, I missed the ASM for sure.

As for your other comment, I can’t control what other people are writing about. I went back and looked at my last few months worth of articles, and I did feature Hughes on 8/15 and 8/1. But before that, he hadn’t been on the list since 4/4.

Fair enough. The listing for the 667 came and went so quick on ebay, a lot of people missed it. 🙂 A 9.8 Batman 608RRP also just went for $5500 on Sunday and a 9.8 Wolverine 1 Campbell/Deadpool went for $3350. Lots of big variants closed at all time, jaw dropping highs in the last couple of days. I was surprised to see none of those sales mentioned here, and instead, more of the same cheap Hughes stuff and a Pressman variant that barely broke $1000. I’m relatively new to the site, but have since read through a lot of the archives. This weekly article is awesome, it’s obvious a lot of time and heart goes into it. I know that the above variants are not easy or cheap specs, but they have all experienced steady growth and are blue chip variants. Even people who paid $3k for them a year ago would have made money today- in some cases A LOT of money. They are steady growers, and when they continue to prove their staying power with fresh new sales highs, to me at least, that is more interesting and noteworthy than having not one, but two cheap books by the same artist featured so prominently in the same article, and at the expense of other, more relevant books by talented artists. Obviously the author can feature whatever books he likes, for whatever reason he likes, these are just my ramblings on why I think articles like this are at their most awesome when they cast a wider net.

What if they make a rule and try to focus on comics around a respectable $3,000 for variant speculation so they can truly connect with their core audience.

You’ll notice a couple posts down that I pointed out that this is a heat article, not a spec article (not that already expensive books can’t still be great specs, they can, and they are all the time). But your point is taken nonetheless.

Love that Hughes Power Girl variant. I’ve been trying to get one for a while now. I’ve been able to get two X-Men Pressman variants (#303 & #307) but not the one above. It has gotten out of my price range.

Very nice pull on that Harbinger #3. It’s only a 1:20 but it’s the highest ratio for that book with less than 300 copies out there. Probably closer to 200. Livewire’s first appearance, and by far Valiant’s top female despite how they cram Faith down our throats because she’s fat. Plus she has hand cannons.

FWIW, I’m definitely more interested in comics I can find and afford than ones I can’t. If you’re “investing” $10,000 in a modern variant you’re nuts. And if you can find Hughes covers in dollar bins (assuming condition), THAT’S an investment.

This is a “Heat Check” article, not a spec article though.

Obviously a single variant selling for ten grand is going to blow the doors off anything else that could possibly go on a list like this for the week, and is certainly more relevant/notable than talking about yet another pedestrian Hughes book going from $1.00 to $5.00 on ebay.

I guess at the end of the day it just depends on what depth of the pool you like to play in.

Batman is sick on that cover!

That DCU AH cover is not even a good cover. If you’re looking for great DCU variants, spend a couple dollars more and pick up the Bolland WW covers.

You sir, are clearly not a Legion fan. That cover is a classic, and a hell of a lot more interesting than the boring Power Girl variant also featured in this column.

  • Avatar

I do like that legionnaires cover! Classic AH.

Shame on you for hating on it!! :oP

What I like about Adam Hughes is simple. He draws you in with little amount of lines. It’s clean.

  • Obnoxio

I agree. Love Hughes but that Legionnaires cover is not the style he’s known for. If it wasn’t signed “AH”, there would only be demand from the DCU collectors.

  • Avatar

    Legionaries is signed by AH
    Half way up left

  • Obnoxio

Right. And thats the only way collectors would know it’s a Hughes cover. Nothing else on there screams “AH”.
