1 Venom: Sinner Takes All #3

WRITER: Larry Hama
ARTIST: Greg Luzniak
1 week ago, this was a $10-15 book.  Just a hint that Ann Weying would be in the Venom movie has caused this to sell for upwards of $60.  I think the market has moved too fast for this book to be honest, but maybe it was just undervalued before.

2 Ultimate Fallout #4 Marko Djurdjevic 1:25 Variant

WRITER: Brian Michael Bendis
ARTIST: Sara Pichelli
Well, we know for certain now that regardless of a book showing up at 5-Below, if it is a key, it will still be a key.  PGX 9.6 over $450?  Wow.  Miles Morales will be a player in the MCU, just how big is the kicker at this point.

3 Doctor Aphra #3 Juan Gimenez Variant

WRITER: Kieron Gillen
ARTIST: Kev Walker
This was a $20 book, but now all of a sudden its a $50+ book?  It is difficult to find as I only note 1 copy for sale on eBay at the moment.  Pretty amazing for a non-incentive variant.

4 Amazing Spider-Man #529

WRITER: J. Michael Straczynski
ARTIST: Ron Garney
No spoilers (well, I haven't seen the movie yet myself so I can't spoil much), but a certain suit appears at the end of a certain movie.  9.8's could have been had a little over a month ago for around $100.  Now expect to pay $150+.

5 Howling #1 Bill Sienkiewicz 1:20 Variant

WRITER: Micky Neilson
ARTIST: Jason Johnson
Independent title, low print run, middle aged nostalgia and a creepy incentive cover has caused this book to sell close to $100 2 days after release.

6 Rick and Morty #1 Johnny Ryan 1:30 Variant

WRITER: Zac Gorman
The RaM train just keeps going.  Why didn't we forsee that this hard to find variant would sell for more than $70 like it was a couple months ago.  Now pushing the mid $100's, those that bought in early are reaping the benefits.

7 Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite #1

WRITER: Gerard Way
ARTIST: Gabriel Ba
Written by My Chemical Romance front man and a Netflix series on the way, and all of a sudden, this $5 book is a $20+ book.  A much larger print run than I had expected (37k) should keep this from going nuclear.

8 Lady Mechanika #1: The Clockwork Assassin Miguel Mercado Yesteryear Variant /250

WRITER: Joe Benitez
ARTIST: Joe Benitez
Yes, I agree that steampunk isn't really a thing anymore, but Benitez's art is made for it.  This gorgeous cover appears to be a must-have as well.  Pre-sold for $25, it is now bringing $60+.

9 All-New Wolverine #2 David Lopez 1:25 Variant

WRITER: Tom Taylor
ARTIST: David Lopez
Yes, I missed this book last time and it is still selling $75+.  1st appearance of Gabrielle (Gabby) Kinney is the reason for this increase, if you weren't aware.

10 Calexit #1

WRITER: Matt Pizzolo
ARTIST: Amancay Nahuelpan
Once again, controversy sells, and Black Mask seems to always be in the middle of controversy.  Both Cover A and B (shown) are selling at triple cover price at the moment.  Take caution with any Black Mask title as we have seen this dog and pony show many times before…

Venom vs. Carnage #2

WRITER: Peter Milligan
ARTIST: Clayton Crain
So with all the buzz around Carnage, why not start buying Carnage's son, Toxin?  #1 features the first appearance of Patrick Mulligan and #2 is Toxin's first appearance.  Both issues are selling well at the moment.

Planet Comics #72

WRITER: Unknown
ARTIST: Bill Benulis, John Belcastro & Vic Carrabotta
Nothing out of the ordinary on my GA pick this week, other than an amazing cover with a green Khoi Phan.  Just over a year ago a 7.5 sold for $660.  The same book sold this week for $1165.  Pretty good ROI in a 1 year span.

Ok Ben, which issue do you consider the 1st true appearance of the Female Venom character…#2 or #3? Topher seems to think it’s #2…..which agree.

    • Ben Steiniger

Clearly #2 is 1st appearance, but as a cameo. #3 is 1st full appearance.

The problem comes to which is more valuable (cameo or 1st full) as it changes from character to character and sometimes changes mid-stream for some. Bats 656 is the first full of Damian, and was more valuable, but then it reversed to 655 simply because 655 has a variant.

My opinion is that #3 will end up holding more value simply because of the cover…

I was thinking the same thing man…..That cover is awesome. Thanks again man.

        • Topher

One really can’t argue against the cover. What can I say? Cover art rules. 2 is key though for the simple fact that is gives us the cameo of a full bride of Venom with the cliffhanger ending. This ending was lead up to by a story which tells the origin of Ann becoming She-Venom. In my opinion this narrative makes 2 very important. Because she isn’t just a final page add in like soooooo many other first cameos I wouldn’t sleep on 2.

Oh and Shaun Leggit deserves some serious credit on this. He found the book before anyone.

I agree Topher, I think issue #2 will be very important to the development of this character and should be looked at as more than just a one page cameo. I can’t remember a situation quite like this one, It’ll be interesting to see how CGC handles it…maybe it’ll get it’s credit in the near future or maybe not.

          • Skot Whitman

I think people are missing the biggest point about issue 2, it’s not only a cliffhanger cameo first appearance but also an origin. We see how and why she becomes the She-Venom through out the story.

Got some really bad news for people that think issue #3 is the first full, it’s just another cameo since she’s only on 3 pages and Eddie takes it back.

What’s the first full then? I know the answer but i ain’t telling… yet 😉

I would just get both of them if you can. Only buy them cheap. Don’t pay the outrageous prices. These where books that barely sold for $5 not even a year ago. I just can’t see them holding much value in the long run. Ben said the market moved to fast. I will agree with that statement.

Ok, I found some nice cheap Venom STA 2’s so I am totally on board with #2 100% 1st full appearance and all that. Will people start fighting over Toxin’s 1st full appearance in Venom vs Carnage issue 2 or 3 ?

  • Khoi Cakes

Glad to see you back buddy.

Umbrella Academy is crazy, the FCBD issues are gone on ebay. There was like 20+ a day or two ago.

Nice to see All New Wolverine #2 Lopez variant finally make the list. I had been calling for it for over a month. Also, I brought up Doctor Aphra #3 in the hottest of 2017 article yesterday. Happy to see that too.

Just my opinion, I don’t see books like Howling, Lady Mechanika or Calexit holding at the prices they are selling now as they are just flavor of the day so they will plummet. Not great investments.

I would have had Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #8 Clayton Crain variant in there as it is selling consistently and I think it will only increase in value and demand. Also Spider-Men II #1 Tedesco is selling well also. So I would have had those over Lady Mechanika & Calexit for sure.

    Good job though as always.

    • Ben Steiniger

      Thanks for the kind words.

The Crain is kind of all over the place with sales as low as $30 and the Tedesco is only selling for about $40-50, which isn’t really an impressive number for a 1:50 variant, so I opted for the other books as they were selling for multiple times their release price.

Also, this is just a pulse of what is already going on and not necessarily an indicator of sales going forward.

Umbrella Academy is killing it right now. Excellent choices this week. That print run shocks me.

The early issues of the 40th anniversary Star Wars covers were crazy hard to find when the first came out. All my retailers were caught offguard with the demand, and the ratio requirements needed to order them were…confusing. Most stores have caught on and order heavily now.

Unfortunately Miles Morales will not be a player in the MCU. At least not as a character named “Spider-Man”. Contractually, the only character that can ever be Spider-man in the live action films is Peter Parker. That is why we have only seen (and will ever only seel Miles Morales in cartoons. While that little Easter egg in Homecoming was cute, that is all it will ever be. And here’s another fun fact about the Ultimate Fallout 4 variant – years before it was burned off in 5 below packs, it was burned off in a Marvel variant dump through Diamond. So this book is out there, in bulk, and is not rare, so be careful not to overpay based on BS speculative hype that has no basis in reality.

I didnt realize how scarce the first 40th anniversary Doctor Aphra Gimenez variant was. The shop I go to had 7 of them in their back issue stuff. Like others have said its wierd that something that was not a numbered variant would be that hard to find but the fact that there are only a few currently for sale on ebay I guess says a lot.

Still wanting at least one issue of Planet Comics in my PC. Seems like affordable copies have pretty much dried up.

I’m not typically vocal, but I appreciate the article. Thanks for doing it.
