Dave Stevens Covers

Hadn't done this in a while and I thought it was a nice way of paying tribute to another one of those artists that left us way too early and, unfortunately, with not the biggest body of work. Most of you know who Dave Stevens was, either through his beautiful good girl art or through his own creation, the Rocketeer.

Somewhere between Frank Frazetta and Adam Hughes, Dave Stevens rediscovered Bettie Page and introduced a whole generation of comic readers to pin-ups and did so with incredible taste and talent.

We have been talking on and off about his covers at g+ and it's obvious that people are still interested in his work, so I thought it would be nice to have a list for all of us who are hardcore fans of one of the masters.

Love the correlation between Frazetta and Huges! I definitely see that union. Great post!

    Awesome write up, awesome artist!

Great write up. There are also a couple of Stevens swipes out there including Red She Hulk no.59 by Luke Ross. It’s astounding to see the limited work that was done by Stevens….

Excellent article – too bad there isn’t more of his work out there. A couple days ago I picked up those Rocketeer Adventures 1 out of 1000 variants based on Khoi’s latest video haul. Awesome covers.

Love Dave Stevens, trying to get all his covers. Gone too soon!

Love Dave’s art, and of course, he was the one who reawakened the interest in Bettie Page. I have a lot of his Rocketeer stuff, gotta look for some of that beautiful indy comic work.
Thanks for this article, the checklist will come in handy!

    I had that CHEVAL NOIR (1989) # 1, but I don’t know what I did with it!?!

I’m a huge fan of Dave Stevens. I believe I own a full set of his covers. His work has taken a dive in value over the past few years. Now is a great time to pick up high grade copies of his rare books.
Space Vixens, DNA Agents and all the Verotic book have been the toughest to find, or find in high grade for me personally.

Love this I have been quietly buying Stevens covers over the last two years they are great.

As far as standard size comic book covers, he also did Bad Planet #6 for Image. I believe that was his last cover.

Other notable works (that sell for decent money) to keep on the lookout for are:
    – Back Issues (1983)
    – Iger Comics Kingdom (tpb from Blackthorn)
    – Movie Star News (zine size)
    – Vampirella Scarlet Thirst (tpb from Harris)
    – The Comics Journal 117 (classic self portrait)
    – Glamour 7 International (my personal favorite)
    – Alter Ego Magazine 21 and 43

Almost all of these tpb’s and magazine covers listed are more scarce than any of his comic covers. Finding these cheap is not easy.

Nice list, one of my absolute favourite artists. Def agree with Davidone’s additions and would also suggest..

There are 2 versions of 3-D Zone 16, one without an issue number
There is a Hundred Penny Press edition of IDW’s Rocketeer #1
Dallas Comicon did a 2002 Tribute program with a great wraparound DS cover

Thanks for this article! I SWEAR I was going to pitch an article on Dave Stevens as I hadn’t seen much on this site about his work. For sure he influenced Hughes and Campbell. Also been putting together all of his covers but almost NEVER see them in the wild and never in any higher grade. Well – you beat me to the punch with this idea… I’ll think of something else.

Damn. Life is weird… cause I just picked up my copy of the Rocketeer movie adaptation yesterday and was thinking how cool the cover was. Always liked the Rocketeer!
