1 Venom (Vol. 3) #3 J. Scott Campbell 1:100 Variant

WRITER: Mike Costa
ARTIST: Gerardo Sandoval
Was there any doubt that this would be #1 this week?  Selling for $250+ in week one is insanely hot.  For all that think that the signed copies will cause a flood, just don't buy a signed copy lol.  Long term, the blue label will probably be the one to have.

2 Deadpool (Vol. 4) #25 Mark Brooks 1:50 Variant

WRITER: Gerry Duggan
ARTIST: Scott Koblish
I'm sure others noted this, but I heard Mel V call his shot on this one and it is a home run.  Underrated artist Mark Brooks gave us a fresh Deadpool cover, which is pretty hard to do considering how many covers he's been on.  Selling for $100+

3 Mighty Captain Marvel #1 Alex Ross 1:50 Variant

WRITER: Margaret Stohl
ARTIST: Ramon Rosanas
I know, Alex Ross books don't hold value and Captain Marvel isn't terribly popular.  I honestly don't know why on either point.  This is a great Alex Ross piece and I trust that MCU is going to promote Carol Danvers in a way that is going to move her up from a ‘C' class character.

4 We Can Never Go Home #1

WRITER: Matthew Rosenberg
ARTIST: Josh Hood
A late addition to the list, Twitter has changed comic book collecting.  One tweet about TV development sparked this book again.  All cheap copies have been bought on eBay, so expect to pay $80+ again for this.  One of my favorite books to read, just remember the words ‘being developed' and ‘TV'.

5 Black Adam #1 Alex Ross Variant

WRITER: Peter J. Tomasi
ARTIST: Doug Mahnke
Very few Black Adam variants to choose from, this one just looks like a winner.  The announcement of a solo Black Adam movie has pushed this, not that rare, variant to $40+. (And yes, Keith mentioned this and other books on his Variant Heat Check–what can I say?)

6 Shazam #28

WRITER: E. Nelson Bridwell
ARTIST: Kurt Schaffenberger
Speaking of Black Adam, 3 weeks ago you could get a 9.6 for $400.  They have soared to $700 in just a short time period.  Hey, The Rock was the sexiest man alive last year, that should account for something, right?

7 Gamora #2 Francesco Mattina 1:25 Variant

WRITER: Nicole Perlman
ARTIST: Marco Checchetto
Extremely cool looking cover that is selling $75-100.  I have a feeling that retailers knew this was coming and print runs may be higher than expected.

8 NYX #3

WRITER: Joe Quesada
ARTIST: Joshua Middleton
Did you not see the last Logan trailer?  Laura is ruthless and as cool as can be at the same time.  I dislike movie spec, but for this character, this movie appears that it is going to solidify her with the mainstream, not just comic fanboys.  Oh, and if you were able to snag a 9.8 when it dropped below $700 a month ago, congrats…they are back to almost $900 again.

9 Zatanna (Vol. 2) #16

WRITER: Adam Beechen
ARTIST: Victor Ibanez
Well, that escalated quickly.  From $15-20 a month ago to $70-80 now, this is still a hard one to find in high grade as people had these in back issue bins, at the back of the books, usually with no board.  Gorgeous cover BTW.

10 Seven To Eternity #1

WRITER: Rick Remender
ARTIST: Jerome Opena
Raws are still selling for around $70-75 and 9.8's in the mid-$200's.  As I mentioned in the last list, some would be cashing out.  I'm very interested to see what happens with this in the next 6 months.

Ninjak (Vol. 3) #23 Ben Templesmith 1:50 Variant

WRITER: Matt Kindt
ARTIST: Marc Laming
Say what you want about Valiant, but they can put out some awesome covers.  Very tough to find, but when it has come up for sale, expect to pay in the $70 range (which might be a bargain compared to those Savage variants).

The Crow #1 Todd McFarlane Variant

WRITER: Jon Muth
ARTIST: Jamie Tolagson
Jon Z dropped some knowledge on the podcast a while back about this book.  At that time it was about a $10 book, now it has pushed passed the $40 mark.

Yeah we gotta give props here because these lists aren’t easy to do.

Lots of research goes into these and I think I speak for most of us here that we appreciate the effort!

Some of these variants are awesome!!

How long you guys think before these identical covers come out in Mexican and German editions?

    1 month?

Zatanna 15 is also starting to creep up in value as well. Both great looking AH covers.
    Great job as usual Ben.

Uum, Ben if your talking about Signed Copies of Venom # 4 Campbell Variant sold by the Campbell store, those were not witnessed by a CGC witness so I can see why a blue label would be better than a signed unwitnessed raw copy. But a signed witnessed and graded yellow label would be best long term no?

Personally I’m shocked at where NYX #4 is going! That’s pretty much a $50-100 book now! For a second appearance!

Starting to get a little concerned about our great hobby. Not trying to stand on a soapbox here, but it seems the only reason books are heating up these days is because of websites like these, and a few forums. Yes, yes, I know this has been happening for a few years now, but Its starting to become the ONLY reason books heat up. Most of the 1:50 venom variants from 2012 took years to increase in value slowly, even with speculation push from forums. Now it seems the only books people are buying are what these sites/forums tell them to. Its not a guess of which book will get hot, its a guess of which book these guys will spotlight next. I mean no ill will towards any of the writers here, or forum goers, its just a little concerning. I also realize this post is just reporting the ” aftermath” of what I just described. It does spotlight them even more however.

Great point. All the more reason to branch out (even more) from the mainstream and not just jump on what everyone else is jumping on. A lot can get overlooked. Invest in what you know and love. For example, in my opinion the new Venom series is the worst I’ve seen the character. I’d rather take the $200+ for the JSC variant and invest it in a rare copy of something I enjoyed.

Great job Stein! Been knocking it out of the park with these lists!!

Silverdream is spot on. The hobby is out of control and getting so gimmicky. J. Scott Campbell is the most overrated A list cover artist in the Biz. He’s just not that good and people love him. I just don’t understand why people like his simple no effort covers and every person has poop on their nose. I haven’t understood the craze since Gen13. The Venom #3 is a horrible cover. How Alex Ross isn’t hot and J. Scott is is unreal. Francesco Mattina is a million times better than J. Scott. I will never understand it.

Yellow label or Blue label is just really what you like more. Everyone knows what J Scotts sig looks like. That’s an impossible sig to fake. I wouldn’t be afraid of a signed copy, and getting it CGC qualified if it’s a 9.8 otherwise. I’d focus on the grade and not the sig.
