Subject #24 Illyana Rasputin AKA: Magik

New Mutants is on it’s way to becoming a feature film. The writer/director Josh Boone posted some images of characters on his instagram back in May. He was teasing that his line up is going to be, Magik, Wolfsbane, Mirage, CannonBall, Sunspot and Warlock. Not really a surprise actually. He also teased the New Mutants movie is going to start filming May 2017 in Canada.

Last month (November) what appeared to be a fan made video for a scene from the Demon Bear arc showed up online. I don't know if it's legit, but it does appear they are in fact doing the Demon Bear arc. The New Mutants film will also be the first of a trilogy, or at least how it was originally pitched.

Anyways, I thought it might be fun to research some of these characters and point out a few variants and key issues for them… Did I say “some“, I meant only one, Magik

Let's face it, there's plenty of other places you can read about the Demon Bear sage. Besides, variants and low print run books with Magik already see action. She's a fan favorite characters and the New Mutant's  movie will only increase interest in her. So why not start talking about her… After all, If we wait 2 years people will be mad we didn't say something sooner.

Giant Sized X-Men #1. First appearance of Illyana Rasputin, aka Colossus little sister… among other characters. I don't think she's even mentioned by name in this… she may actually be referred to as only “little sister”… maybe not even that… Give me a break, I haven't read it in 20 years. This book will always have people hunting for it since it's a grail for those that can afford it.

Uncanny X-Men vol 1#160. There’s does seem to be some confusion with it. Illyana is not “Magik” yet in this issue. It is her first appearance as an adult/teenager, True.  However she's not Magik. Should probably be listed as First “Teenage Illyana Rasputin” rather than first “Adult Magik”, it's less misleading anyways. Adult magik sounds like Zatanna's going to show up and make the X-Men's clothes disappear… Or worst.

New Mutants vol 1 #14. First time Illyana’s uses her powers outside of limbo. It would stand to reason that the print run of this is going to be far less than something like UXM#160. Personally, I find the books where hero's put on the costume, or are given their superhero name more appealing. That’s my opinion. I’d expect this book to go up gradually as we get closer to the films release…  Who am I kidding, people will just pull their copies down and relist at on eBay in 3… 2… 1

Magik has had a few different mini series and one shots over the years, as well as story arcs…

X-Men Magik (1983) #1-4. Magik and Storm team up… this is from 83, so before Magik was really cool. However, as commenters have pointed out below. It's the First time she's referred to as Magik and it is her origin.

By that definition alone it would infact be a key book. So why is it I've been seeing these in dollar bins and you can pick up a set for $10 bucks on ebay? Is it because people don't know it's a Magik key book? I didn't until the comments started. I had dismissed it completely. This is probably one of the most important books on this list as it turns out.

New-Mutants (1987) #51. Magik's only in this book a little bit, with super chapped lips for some odd reason. Kevin Nowlan draws it and that's reason enough to own it. In case it's not, how's about Storm fat shaming Magneto grab you? Well, not really, but kinda on one page if you don't read the world balloons.

New-Mutants (1987) #52. Cool Magik cover by Bill Sienkiewicz and a Magik story penciled by Rick Leonardi inside. I'm a big Rick Leonardi fan.

X-Men Magik (2001) #1-4. Magik vs Mephisto… Except it's not Illyana apparently.

Mystic Arcana Magik (2007) #1 Magik One-Shot.

New-X-Men (2007) #38-41 “The Quest For Magik”. Khoi mentioned Skottie Young on the podcast recently and Youngs's other, or “non baby” art style. This is a real good example of that style we never get to see anymore. X-23 appears in these Magik related issues. Also, all 4 issues form a connecting cover… actually I don't know if it really does, but it sure looks like one.

X-Men Return of Magik (2008 Must Have) #0 Collection of Magik related back-up and short stories. If you want to actually read about Magik, might not be a bad one to check out.

Now, let’s talk about some variants. Because I know how much folks on here like them.

Wolverine and the X-Men #36 1:25 Kris Anka Variant. Roughly 2,400 copies based on estimations. I've been watching this book and cheap copies have been disappearing slowly off the bay. It wasn't me, I only own one copy. I haven't mentioned it to anyone either, so I'm guessing this is a natural occurrence…  Nah, couldn't be.

X-Infernus #1 B. I don't know much about this since I think I only have the first issue. There's a variant by J. Scott Campbell, not sure what the ratio is.

X-Infernus #4 B. There's a variant by Travis Charest, not sure what the ratio is on this one either.

New Mutant vol3 #1 Wraparound variant. Magik and the reset of the new mutants appear on the cover. Drawn by Adam Kubert… Probably not the rarest of the covers for this issue but definitely the best looking. Sorry Alex Ross fans, I'm just not feeling that regular cover or any of the other variants.

New Mutant vol3 #15 1:20 variant. Magik + Art Adams + ratio = Awesome!

New Mutant vol3 #25 1:25 variant. This book is a ghost. It has the same equation working for it as #15 except a slightly better ratio.

Uncanny X-Men vol 3 #19 Campbell variants. There’s a sketch version 1:100 and a 1:50 color. The color cover does seem to do better than the sketch cover on eBay.

Uncanny X-Men vol 3 #20 Adi Granov 1:50 variant. Color version only on this one. It also has the distinction of being the version of Magik used for the Kotobukiya ArtFX statue. She also appears on the cover A for this issue drawn by Chris Bachalo.

Uncanny X-Men vol 3 #21 Terry Dodson 1:25 variant. Only a color version on this one also. This is a pretty common variant due to the ratio but still a beautiful cover.

Uncanny X-Men vol 3 #29 Cover A. I bring this up only because Magik is a primary focus. It's a pretty cool book if you want to read a Magik story or just look at the pretty pictures. Chris Bachalo draws a great Magik. You can play “Where Is Waldo?” the Magik edition with this cover.

Inferno (2015) #1 1:25 Adi Granov variant. Mostly residing in private collections at this point, this could be one of those… well it made the top ten, so I don't know if I need to really go into it.

The Inferno mini series was part of Secret Wars 2015. So content wise it doesn't really matter… Unless you want to read about Domino and Colossus dating in another reality. Colossus gets everyone killed trying to save Magik… Shocker.

Magik is evil and destroys everyone… or they die trying to saver her… Or maybe that's New-X-Men #38-41. Honestly it happens so many times it's hard to keep it straight. I think she has to turn evil every few years for trademarking reasons.

Extraordinary X-Men #1 1:20 Campbell variant. Fairly easy to find. Based on the number of regular covers I’ve seen dumped at below cover leads me to believe there are a lot of this variant in the wild… or tucked away in pc's.

Extraordinary X-Men Annual (2016) #1 C Skottie Young variant. Prices are all over the place on these. Probably can still be found for cover price at your LCS. I really like the little Magik variant cover. It was one of 3 covers, which Marvel seems to be doing for their annuals this year.

Giant Size Little Marvel A vs X #1. In the off chance you are looking to read a comic with Magik, I really liked the first story in this. It's Little Magik raining terror on the other Young X-Men and Avengers. It's pretty funny. Picture the Skottie Young EXMA #1 cover but a short story of that. I'd totally read that every month.

What? That's not enough… Oh, wait, you're right… I totally forgot a Dell'Otto variant… lets see, hows about Uncanny X-Men vol 3 #1 1:50 variant?

As always with these things some books are going to pull ahead at some point. Others are already expensive and some will never be. I do expect as we get closer to the start of filming more information will surface, which in turn will impact the market. Some of these might skyrocket depending on the market… Which seems to be extremely volatile these day. So just keep that in mind.

Till Next Week, Believe in Magik!

Disclaimer: As always, I urge you to use restraint when buying. Research from multiple sources to form your own opinions before investing. Nobody's forcing you to buy any of this, there's no gun to your head, it's completely up to you.

  • Just a note on the X-Men Magik (1983) #1-4. This is where they tell the story of how she became the Darkchylde and why in Uncanny X-Men vol.1 #160 she began as a child and turned into a teenager.

  • Also if I am not mistaken, the X-Men Magik (2001) #1-4 is not actually Illyana, but Amanda Sefton posing as Illyana. Mephisto is an ally, I think, in this run as the big bad is a creation of Amanda’s own doing.

  • Great article.

For what it’s worth, NM 14 isn’t really the first time she’s explicitly called Magik. The front page is titled, “Do you believe in Magik,” but she doesn’t get her powers in this issue and no one ever explicitly calls her Magik. She doesn’t even use her powers for the first time in this issue.

She is first implicitly named Magik in the Magik mini series where she shows the fully display of her powers.

When Illyana returns from limbo as an adult in UXM 160, it is after the events of the Magik mini series, so she technically does have all her powers in that issue; you just haven’t seen them yet.

In NM 14, there is a panel where she uses her powers for the first time outside of Limbo with the NM team.

  • imo X-Infernus 1B and Inferno 1 variant are going to be the “big” Magik books to own. Great covers, Magik is the only character on those and they’re both fairly rare.

UXM 145 is the first time they use the name Illyana
UXM 160 has the added bonus of being the first appearance of Limbo

The Magik mini series is one i’ve grabbed a few copies of since it’s kind of her origin story and shows how she got her powers. Amanda Sefton is the 2nd Magik, we don’t see her until X-Men: Black Sun, the Magik in the 80’s mini series is Illyana.

X-Men Magik (1983) #1-4 is not Amanda Sefton and is in fact Illyanna.

GS X-men #1 – first appearance of Illyana
UXM 160 – First appearance of adult Illyana and Limbo
    X-Men Magik (1983) #1-4 – Origin story, First Magik
New Mutants 14 – First time Magik appears in New Mutants

  • As usual, Adi Granov with the two most beautiful covers. Can’t decide if the Inferno #1 or the UXM #20 is the better investment though.

  • Magik 1 mini series December 1983.
    New Mutants 14 April 1984.
The wikipedia states that New Mutants 14 is her first appearance.
CGC and CBCS notes nothing on either book.

Xmen 160 is noted 1st Illyana (Magik) by CGC.
It is noted 1st Magik (Illyana) by CBCS.

Looks like all the “official sources” are having trouble with this one as well.
