Subject #19 Doctor Aphra
Doctor Aphra, the breakout star of the Darth Vader Marvel Comics series is getting her own title. Yes, I’m sure you already knew that, but some of the other people reading this didn’t. For those that didn’t, December is when it’s happening.
So, might as well list out her appearance in the Star Wars books for new readers. It's not like there's a ton of them. Get in early and there's less to buy later, besides, you don't want to be late to the party should something major happen.
Darth Vader #3 First Appearance Doctor Aphra, first cover appearance on both the regular and the ratio variant cover. First interior appearance.
Darth Vader #4 Second Interior Appearance of Doctor Aphra
Darth Vader #3 Third Interior Appearance of Doctor Aphra
Are you starting to see a trend? It’s a shorter list of issues she doesn’t appear in throughout the Darth Vader title. With the exception of the first 2 issues, if she doesn’t appear in the interior story she’s at least mentioned till the end of the series at issue #25.
Aphra appears in the Vader Down crossover. In some ways this is where things start going a little south for Aphra. She also jumps ship from Darth Vader’s title to the regular Star Wars book for a few issues.
Star Wars #16 – 19. Doctor Aphra is an active part of the “Rebel Jail” story arc. We also find out her connections to other characters beyond Vader and the homicidal droids from the Darth Vader’s series. One connection is to a character rumored to be appearing in the Han Solo solo movie. Not going to spoil it, you can read the issues and find out.
Darth Vader #21 -25 Doctor Aphra returns to the Darth Vader title after her visit to the Star Wars rebel jail story arc. This begins the final arc of what Vader will ultimately do with her. I'll admit, it was way more dramatic before word broke of her new series.
Most of the time with speculation we look a ratio variants as being the most valuable long-term. We’ve seen comics with normal print runs become harder to find simply because of a cover artist or character appearance. If you’re looking to speculate on covers with Doctor Aphra there's only a few books to look at.
Aphra appears on 6 Darth Vader covers where she is the primary focus, half of those are regular covers. She appears in the background or as a disembodied head on a few, but that only brings the total to 9. There’s also 3 Star Wars covers she appears on…
So there’s a total of 12 covers across both titles she appears on, including floating heads. Here they are.
Darth Vader #3 Both the regular cover and the variant.
Darth Vader #8 Regular cover.
Darth Vader #10 Regular cover.
Darth Vader #13 Hastings Exclusive Vader Down Connecting Variant (floating head).
Star Wars #13 Vader Down Connecting Variant.
Star Wars #16 Variant Cover C (floating head).
Star Wars #18 Regular and sketch cover.
Darth Vader #20 Story So Far Variant Cover (floating head).
Darth Vader #21 Regular cover.
Darth Vader #25 B Adi Granov cover.
Darth Vader #25 JTC Action Figure Variant.
That’s not very many books really. I didn’t realize I had been picking up the covers she appeared on when they were released. I kept hunting for more, there just don’t seem to be any… well except that other Darth Vader #25 cover that's just her eyes in a rectangle. But I'm not counting that one.
Doctor Aphra's solo series starts next month and we don't really know what it's going to about… Since it's Marvel, it'll probably be about 8 issues (rimshot).
Here's just a few of the variants for next month to commemorate issue #1.
Outside of the comics Aphra does appear in the Star Wars Arena mobile game. So it appears she's crossing out of the comics and into other Star Wars related media. Which is a good sign for her future in the Star Wars universe.
There do seem to be a few rumors circulating that Aphra might have ties to other characters in the upcoming Star Wars films. At the time of writing this I haven't seen or read anything concrete, definitely nothing worth repeating… Yet. Should any of those rumors pan out I'll update this article or do a follow-up.
Till Next Week!
