The Etheric One

wednesday

If you just wake up after a coma and this is the first time you go into a comic shop in months, first of all, we're glad you are doing better but please don't judge the comic industry by their output this week … Lots of Nth printings from everyone (Kill or be Killed #1 is now on its 4th!), business as usual for the big two and a few great-looking books, but it could have been better.

Ether #1Ether #1

For all of you out there who don't know him, David Rubín is an amazing Spanish artist who's going to be getting more and more work published in the US over the next few months. I've been looking forward to this book since it was announced and this mini-series is only the first chapter in a longer story. Get ready for some crazy world building in a scale we unfortunately don't see in comics very often.

Batman #11Batman #11

King is doing some crazy stuff in this book. It might not be the comic a lot of people were expecting, but having Batman lead his own Suicide Squad to break the Psycho-Pirate from Bane's grasp is the kind of story we have never seen before in a Batman book. The previous issue was delightfully insane and can't wait to see what Batman's plan is … and also, that's a really cool cover.

Superman #11Superman #11

Once again, this title has gone from underdog of the rebirth relaunch to one of the clear winners. Giving Superboy some time to grow as a character has proved to be a genius idea and teaming him up with Damian is just the cherry on top. DC, we're ready for Supersons now, bring it on!!!

Thanos #1Thanos #1

As I guess it's the case with many of you, when I think Thanos, I immediately think of Jim Starlin. No one has come close to handling this character half as well. I am hoping to be proved wrong by Jeff Lemire and Mike Deodato.

I would have featured Dekal's 1:25 variant, but it's not his best work, to be perfectly honest.

Red Dog #1Red Dog #1

451 are back with Rob Cohen's Red Dog. I am not sure what to expect from the writer of Fast & Furious, but color me curious about where this sci-fi story will take us.

All-New Wolverine #14 Leinil Francis Yu 1:25 VariantAll-New Wolverine #14 Leinil Francis Yu 1:25 Variant

X-23 is hot right now and this cover might show legs if Fox go down the X-23 route as it seems they might. She looks fierce!!!

Jessica Jones #2 Siya Oum 1:25 VariantJessica Jones #2 Siya Oum 1:25 Variant

It's been a while since we had Oum in this section, but it's always nice to see her art. Another 1:25 cover too, so look out for it.

Yakuza Demon Killers #1Yakuza Demon Killers #1

I don't really know the creators behind this series, but that's a cover that automatically caught my attention. If Eli Powell can make the interiors look as good, count me in!

 Cool covers / Personal obsessions

Doctor Strange #14Doctor Strange #14

Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo doing Satana AND Master Pandemonium in the same issue? Only a couple of months until the HC, Iñigo, be strong!!!

Jessica Jones #2 Karmone Shirahama VariantJessica Jones #2 Kamome Shirahama Variant

Really like this artist … No matter how simple the layout, the art always has an energy that makes it vibrate.

Archie Meets Ramones Jaime Hernandez 2nd Print VariantArchie Meets Ramones Jaime Hernandez 2nd Print Variant

Now this is a 2nd Print Variant, Jaime Hernandez drawing the Ramones is something special, not just a color change.

Slam #1Slam #1

Boom keep doing their thing and putting out books that look really good. This time they invite us to the world of roller derby.

1568447_xlSuper Weird Heroes

I really like superheroes done by indie creators (like DC's Bizarro Comics or Marvel's Strange Tales). They are crazy stories with a different sensibility. Lately I have been getting the same vibe from unknown old school talent, so it's always nice to be introduced to more creators from a time when there were no rules and things like The Hand or The Eye seemed like a good idea.

Swipe / Mystery of the week

After 2 issues Manapul needs another artist to take over. However, Clay Mann being the substitute artist, I don't think there are going to have too many complaints. He certainly is talking a language cover swipe fans can understand:

Trinity #3Trinity #3 Batman #404Batman #404

Here's the mystery part … This comic was originally solicited with this amazing cover that we were all really looking forward, anyone know what happened?

Trinity #3 (solicited)

That's it for this week. What would you buy? There can be only one!

I’m sure someone took offense to the depiction of Wonder Woman’s crotch.

Where’s Reborn #2, specifically Capullo’s B cover? That X-23 cover might take the cake, based on the hotness of the character right now.

As far as the Trinity cover, DC did that last minute swap with a Detective Comics cover earlier this year. Then, released the original cover a few issues later. I suspect we will see that cover from Mann in an upcoming issue of Trinity.

    Great list!

I loaded up on All New Wolverine 14. Expecting less than a 1500 distribution given the print run of the previous issues.

I think the sleeper this week is the Squadron supreme # 13 1:25 Sanchez variant. Its a pretty bad ass cover. Yeah, its not a girl so who cares… Print run has got to be tiny. Regular orders are around 16-17k for the last few issues that’s a rough estimate of 650-700 for the Sanchez variant. I grabbed two

Surprised/not surprised Harbinger Renegades #1 isn’t on this list. A lot of talk about this book, and aside from being the site’s Valiant fan, this book pre-sold over 46k which I’m pretty sure is VEI’s highest selling first print to date. First appearance of a new villain that is going to be central to the announced Harbinger Wars 2 event, and has a coupon in it to be redeemed along with issues 2-4 for Harbinger Wars 2 #0. Plus it’s a pretty damn good read.
