The Random Crossover Collection

interview4

It's been a while since we had one of these, so in order to get it going again, I submit for your approval and/or mockery the madness that is my crossover collection!!! As always, if you want to feature your collection, please send us an email at admin_AT_comicbookinvest_DOT_com

The concept of actually going for a crossover collection as a real project cristalized in my head about 2 years ago. I had plenty of them by then, and decided to put all of them together and set a basic set of rules. At this moment in time, I consider a crossover a comic that feature characters created and owned by 2 different entities (simple enough: when a Marvel and a DC character meet it will be a crossover, but so will it be if Savage Dragon meets Invincible, which makes 90% of Image's first 2 years eligible).

The definition is quite open and I tend to limit it to original comic book characters, unless it's characters that have been in comics long enough to be part of comic history, characters from another medium that I really like (how can you say no to a series with Ash, Freddy and Jason? Or anything crossing over with the Planet of the Apes?) or they are characters that really don't belong together even if they are part of the same publisher (Dynamite's series with Kings characters, but, as some of you know already, I would buy anything with Mandrake in it anyway). Again, a very random definition that allows me to put lots of different stuff together while keeping a modicum of sense … to me.

I also try to keep up with crossovers that only become that retro-actively (change of ownership) so, yes, it can be a lot of work. My collection is at about 800+ comics at the moment.

Is it worth it? Hardly! Why do it then?

Irrefutable proof that Eminem faced Aliens at some point

Irrefutable proof that Eminem faced Aliens at some point

The first reason would have to be variety: all these books (even though they mostly stay true to the meet/fight/team-up formula) are by different creators, and feature characters I might never have come across otherwise. They all find the time to introduce the characters and give you some set-up of their universe. They are basically trailers for both characters, and as such, they try to be as engaging as possible. Most of them fail, but there's beauty in comicbook failures, especially when following such a clear formula.

Another important factor is that there's not a clear definition of what a crossover collection should contain and I find this very liberating. When I finish my Incredible Hulk volume 2 run, that's it, I am done with that. Depending on your definition of a crossover (and in my case I try to be as open about it as possible within reason), you will never finish the collection, so there's no pressure or hurry to finish it. Plus, every time you find a new one, you get the excitement of adding to your collection.

Who wouldn't want Goon vs Sharknado to happen? If it's you, then you don't have a heart!!!

Who wouldn't want Goon vs Sharknado to happen? If it's you, then you don't have a heart!!!

Also, I found an excuse to make a potential investment out of it: “If they need the permission of the involved characters' owners to reprint it, it would be reasonable to think that some of these might never get reprinted”. In my defense, the statement still holds true. What was really stupid of me was to think people would be interested in these at all.

There's also the price factor … These books are cheap and you can find them everywhere, so they make up for great filler when ordering online or a good consolation prize when there's nothing you really like at the shop. Kids, always start with the quarter/50cent/dollar bin! $20 will get your crossover collection started (with plenty spare to pay for your lunch).

Once you've gotten it going, though, the main problem is finding out about certain issues you are missing, as there's not a proper definition of what a crossover is or a full checklist of all crossovers ever. Also, some of the indie crossovers have a very small print run, if you ever get to hear about them.

The crossover grail!!!

The crossover grail!!!

Some are impossible to find (POW! BIFF! POPS!), others have not been mentioned in decades because they are not really stories (MAGAZINELAND, USA … thanks Marq!!!), a few have not even been published in the US (COMIC RELIEF COMIC) and you can be certain that you haven't heard about lots of them … but every longbox becomes an adventure.

These comics (with counted exceptions) will never reach crazy prices or pay for anyone's retirement. Join the crossover cause if you like possibly bad comics, if you enjoy stuff that's so bad it's good and if you are curious about why the 90s (let's call it the golden age of crossovers) are the decade of horror everyone keeps saying it is (even though this decade seems to be trying to go for silver). A scary thought … if the 90s had so many crossovers it was probably due to, first, the Image and creator-owned/indie boom (with its anything goes spirit) and, second, the mega-crisis right after that (which forced Marvel and DC to team up repeatedly). With so many crossovers coming out these days, you really have to wonder if it's another sign of the comicalypse.

In closing, I would say that the key for a healthy crossover collection is low expectations. In exchange, you will occasionally get comics that are actually pretty good (or at least fun) and an introduction to hundreds of characters and creators you are not familiar with. Also, their re-readability is unparalleled: each new piece in your collection will make you want to read others with the same characters.

As there was no checklist with the Alan Moore spotlight this week (the article is in fact the checklist), here's my current list of crossovers, in case you want to give it a shot (or comment if there are some crossovers that are missing from the list). I know there are a few incomplete series, but chances are I am just waiting for the price to get even lower. Also, you will notice some TPBs as sometimes these are way easier to find than some of the issues, and most of the times cheaper too …

I think I outdid myself this time, could this be the worst comic themed wallpaper ever???

That’s awesome. Don’t follow the pack and collect what you love.

Great article, I too enjoy the crossover.

In slightly related news: your hulk vol 2 run? I’m intrigued.

Just a heads up on a title that’s either missing from your collection, or that you’ve possibly decided doesn’t count: Rom.

    Here are the Rom issues (there may be a few I missed) that feature major Marvel characters as guest stars: 12, (Jack of Hearts), 17 & 18 (X-Men), 23 (Power Man & Iron Fist), 26 & 27 (Galactus), 28 (Mole Man), 31 & 32 (Rogue), 34 & 35 (Namor), 38 & 39 (Shang-Chi, weirdest team-up ever), 41 (Doctor Strange), 50 (Skrulls), 53-55 (Nick Fury & Rick Jones), 56 & 57 (Alpha Flight), 58 & 59 (Ant-Man), 61-63 (Forge), 65 & 66 (Avengers & X-Men), 72 (The Beyond, Rick Jones, and Captain America), Annual 3 (New Mutants), and Annual 4 (Imperial Guard).

I think at least most of these can be had pretty cheap!
