Baltimore Comic Con 2016

This Labor Day weekend a large contingent of CBSI members will be converging in Maryland for the 2016 Baltimore Comic Con. We have people coming from the other side of the map this weekend to go to, in my opinion, the best comic book convention on the calendar. Last year I attended 17 conventions from one end of the US to the other. I had some good experiences and some not so good experiences. The best experience by far was Baltimore in 2015.

It started off amazing before the show even began. Randy Tischler the man who runs the show was the 1st person to issue me and this website press credentials. It doesn’t sound like much, but it was beyond cool to me. I had heard from multiple people this was the best-kept secret in the convention tour so I had to find out for myself.

I think before the show I was expected to be let down, as most shows that summer on the East Coast were just horrible. Very few books and the books anyone had were 1/3 higher than eBay prices. Tons of cosplay and more vendors selling swords and fudge than actual comic books. When I first walked into the convention floor I knew this was going to be different. 90 percent of all the booths had books and walls full of books. You had guys who do every show possible, and you had guys like Larry Doherty who showed. Nobody sold the number of books Larry did last year in Baltimore, nobody. He was on the Black Mask train before anyone and had plenty of stock to sell to eager enthusiasts and speculators.  I bought 63 books last year throughout the 3 day convention. I bought some high-end rare stuff I had been looking for, for months, and some $2 books I had been looking for to fill gaps in runs! The cool part was, you had dollar box vendors and guys with All-Star Comics #8’s. Whatever kind of comic book collector you are, Baltimore had you covered.

CGC was there doing their on-site grading last year and will be there this year doing the same. I hadn’t experienced it before, and I must say it’s amazing service. I spent the previous month before the show pressing my books and picking out which books to get graded. I was lucky enough to get in line early Friday and avoid the dreaded cut-off. This was so cool to me. I love instant gratification and this con and service by CGC provided just that. No waiting on grades to post on the website, or books to finally ship. Drop em off Friday, pick them up Sunday. I won’t be going as overboard this year due to some CGC recent quality control issues, but will still be getting some of my gems graded just because I can.

I very rarely before Baltimore spent a lot of time in the “Artist Alley”. Most conventions have the celebrities and artists in the same section, and it’s usually a disaster trying to walk and navigate through it. Baltimore was different. They had the artists far away from everything else, and it was very easy to approach and find whatever artist you were looking for. I was able to have conversations and get sketches done in minimal time. I met Mel last year in artists alley and a year later he is a good friend and one of the 5 members of our blossoming CBSI podcast. I made amends with Larry and realized the guy you meet in person isn’t who you think he is online. I met CBSI members for the first time in Robert Dyche and Joseph Chi. Joseph drove 3 hours just to meet me and have dinner. The con was perfect. They had food and refreshments readily available. They had places to sit when your feet hurt. The ushers and workers were friendly and helpful. This was the exact opposite of what I had seen around the country the previous months. I knew right then and there I wouldn’t miss the BMCC ever again. Thankfully there isn’t a Raven’s game this Sunday. It made parking a disaster last year on the last day. Took me 2 hours to find a spot, and I had to walk further than I wanted to get in the doors. By the times I hoofed my 23 slabs I picked up from CGC that day back to my rental, I needed a nap.

If you live within driving distance of Baltimore this weekend you owe to yourself to try and attend this convention. It’s what comic book conventions used to be, and what they should be today. Nice people, great venue with thousands of comic books. I really appreciate Randy for allowing me to attend this year and bring a few friends. We are going to be doing live podcasts throughout the weekend when time allows.

This year we have over 50+ CBSI members coming to this con at my last count. The guest list this year is incredible. This is the list of guests you can expect this weekend.
