TOP 100 VARIANTS

This list, based on the current market values for both raw and graded copies, highlights today’s most valuable 100 comic book variants. Excluded from this list are high ratio variants (1:500, 1:1000, etc.), price, error and recalled “variants”. Why exclude these? High ratio variants have a high initial purchase price. Most of these (while still expensive) have all for the most part decreased in value since their initial release. For example: STAR WARS: VADER DOWN #1 1:4999 was at the top of this list. With this book hitting heights of $7K, its recent sale of $959 isn’t a true representative of this list’s intentions. Error/recalled variants (which I LOVE and should have its own list) are oddities and not intended as a “variant”.

Every variant on this list was obtainable for reasonable prices upon release and have since shot up in value. Granted, this isn’t a definitive list. It simply reflects what has sold within the past 3 months. There are plenty of variants missing that simply haven’t seen a sale in a very long time, mostly due to scarcity. Also, you may be wondering why your favorite cover isn’t on here. Prices fluctuate incredibly frequently on variants. What sold for $250 a few months ago may have dipped down to $150. There are SO many variants in the $100 to $170 range that JUST missed this list by a few dollars. (For example, after I finished this article, Wolverine #310 1:100 Platt variant hit a crazy height at $900 for a CGC 9.8.  No raw sales before for that or the 1:200 sketch previously.  That price will make these copies come out of the woodwork.  They will show up on this list next time!).  Did we miss something? Let us know and we’ll add it to the next update.  This will be updated every few months and will hopefully be helpful to our readers when seeking out the best of the best variants to chase. Thanks for visiting and enjoy!

Amazing Spider-Man #667 Variant

#1 – AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #667 DELL’OTTO 1:100 VARIANT (MARVEL 2011)

eBay NM Avg raw: $2,000 (*update* member JDR found a more recent raw sale at $2,500 on 3/25/16.  So, still #1.  It just gives Siege a little more work to do.  Thanks JDR!)

eBay Graded Sale: 9.6: $4,000

The king of “normal” ratio incentive variants. This incredibly hard to find variant is all thanks to it being a 1:100 variant during Spidey’s lowest sales ever in 2011. A book like this doesn’t get easier to find as time passes. The folks paying these prices are most likely keeping these in their collection.

siege-3-var

#2 – SIEGE #3 DEADPOOL CAMPBELL VARIANT (MARVEL 2010)

eBay NM Avg raw: $1,913

eBay Graded Sale: 9.4: $1,650

When I started making this list, the last sale was in May at $900. Well, a recent sale on 8/21 blew that out of the water at close to $2K, almost overtaking the King Spidey #667. To get this variant, retailers had to send into Marvel 50 unsold copies of DC’s Blackest Night crossover to get 1 copy of this variant. Not many did. Being a scarce Deadpool Campbell variant (rumored to be around 400 copies), it can easily command a high price for quite some time.

Walking Dead #100 Lucille Ruby

#3 – WALKING DEAD #100 LUCILLE RUBY VARIANT (IMAGE 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $1,675

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $2,400

This book is SO close to overtaking WD #1 as the most expensive book in the series. This was a Skybound Black Friday to Cyber Monday limited to 250 exclusive in 2012. With so few copies, fans will want one for their collections and they just won’t show up. And seeing how there haven’t been any copies lately, this appears to have already happened.

Wolverine1Deadpool

#4 – WOLVERINE #1 CAMPBELL “DEADPOOL” VARIANT (MARVEL 2010)

eBay NM Avg raw: $1,425

eBay Graded Sale: 9.6: $1,775

Again, when I started this list the most recent sale was $810. Now, on 8/14 this saw a NM copy sell for $1,425. Like Siege, to get 1 copy of this variant, retailers had to send in 50 covers from a specific list. It’s arguably rarer than Siege and black covers are brutal to get in high grade. Another rumored print run of 450 copies, this variant will never stop climbing this list and I guarantee it will eventually be #1.

Amazing_Spider-Man_Vol_1_678_Venom_Variant

#5 – AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #678 QUINONES MARY JANE VENOM 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $1,300

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $3,275

Easily the most coveted Spider-Man variant. This cover is so hard to find and so valuable that it has spiked over every other “2012 Venom Variant Month ” book (most make an appearance on this list). The raw value for this has somewhat stabilized after making big jumps for the past few years. However, high grade 9.8 copies still sell for a premium.

Spawn185SketchCover

#6 – SPAWN #185 WHILCE PORTACIO/MCFARLANE SKETCH VARIANT (IMAGE 2008)

eBay NM Avg raw: $1,300

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Again, this price is an estimate. It’s based off of a lot sale on 6/24/16 of $2,750, which included other popular Spawn #185 variants, including the headless variant (w/ gun) that sells for $200, a CGC SS McFarlane 9.6 of that variant (valued at $1.2K), two standard issues and a more common headless (no gun) variant. What helped drive this lot is this incredibly rare B&W Endgame Sketch variant. Drawn by Whilce Portacio and inked by Todd McFarlane, this variant came during a time when Spawn was down to a low 30K print run.  Regardless, it’s one of the rarest and most valuable Spawn books.

WalkingDead100HeroInitiativeBlank

#7 – WALKING DEAD #100 HERO INITIATIVE BLANK VARIANT (IMAGE 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $1,238

eBay Graded Sale: PGX 9.8: $2,400

This “Stolen” blank variant was initially created for the Hero Initiative. It’s iffy whether they were stolen or just excess copies that employees or artists kept. Regardless, CGC considers them as stolen and won’t grade them and will send them back to the submitter. However, a blank PGX 9.8 sold for $2,400. Nothing on it. Just a blank cover. Crazy. The books that have sketches done by industry artists generally sell for $3K and up.

tf_universe_comic1_unicron

#8 – TRANSFORMERS UNIVERSE #1 LIMITED 2003 OTFCC “UNICRON” VARIANT (3H PROD 2003)

eBay NM Avg raw: $1,050

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

This alternate cover to Transformers Universe #1 featuring Unicron was only available in limited numbers at the first OTFCC (Official Transformers Collectors Club Convention) 2003 convention. Rumors mention that this was limited to 100 copies, maybe even less. No one (or not many) even knew about this book until its sale on 5/16/16. And it was a VF+ copy nonetheless! A copy is currently up for sale at $2,500.

Black_Panther_Vol_5_1_Convention_Variant

#9 – BLACK PANTHER #1 2009 NYCC J. SCOTT CAMPBELL PARTIAL SKETCH VARIANT (MARVEL 2009)

eBay NM Avg raw: $1,000

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $3,650

A VF copy sold in July for $418 in an auction. This is really surprising as raw copies of this very rarely pop up. The $1,000 is a guess based off of that sale for a NM copy. Nothing special happens in this issue nor has the female Black Panther taken off in the aftermarket. It’s simply hard to find and a gorgeous Campbell cover that looks different from his more frequent style.

UncannyX-Men510Sketch

#10 – UNCANNY X-MEN #510 J. SCOTT CAMPBELL “PSYLOCKE” SKETCH VARIANT (MARVEL 2009)

eBay NM Avg raw: $1,000

eBay Graded Sale: 9.6: $1,975

Somehow, the Campbell #510 variant looks even more amazing with just the white background. This was passed out in 2009 at both the Heroes Con in Charlotte (North Carolina) and San Diego Comic Con. It definitely makes you pay attention to future limited variants like this. Just give them 5 to 6 years and BOOM.

Saga 2012 C2E2 Diamond Retailer Edition (RRP) Saga #1 1st App Alana, Marko, The Will, and The Lying Cat

#11 – SAGA #1 RETAILER SUMMIT RRP VARIANT (IMAGE 2008)

eBay NM Avg raw: $950

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $1,500

This raw value is an estimate. Raw copies VERY rarely come up for sale. Limited to 500 copies, this Diamond Retailer Summit variant has been heavily slabbed. Recent copies are selling for $1,500. Don’t sell your copies as I definitely expect this to continue to creep up to the top of this list.

X-23_Vol_3_1_Dell'otto_Variant

#12 – X-23 #1 DELL’OTTO 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL 2010)

eBay NM Avg raw: $880

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $1,625

X-23 is one of the hottest characters right now. Dell’Otto is one of the hottest artists. Connecting those two made this variant into a gorgeous piece of art. After jumping from $100 just a year ago, it has seemed to have leveled out lately. Don’t worry, this is never going to go back down.

ASMPresentsBlackCat1variant

#13 – AMAZING SPIDER-MAN PRESENTS: BLACK CAT #1 CAMPBELL 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL 2010)

eBay NM Avg raw: $787

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $1,425

Arguably one of Campbell’s best covers and it’s incredible tough to find! On 4/9 it sold raw for $500 and $700 on 4/10. Then it dried up. On 6/19, someone listed this for $200 with the best offer turned on. It sold for full price in a mere 17 minutes. Doh! Poor oblivious seller.  Recently, in July, a NM copy sold for $787.

Batman 608 RRP

#14 – BATMAN #608 RRP JIM LEE VARIANT (DC 2006)

eBay NM Avg raw: $740

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $2,150 (*update* member JDR found any even better 9.8 price from 3/21/16 at $3,383.  That’s pretty awesome.)

This 10 year old variant doesn’t seem to ever go away. It commands a high price and appears it always will. It’s the most coveted Batman variant of all time and it doesn’t hurt that Harley is also on the cover. Oh, and Jim Lee is a pretty strong artist too.

captain-marvel-14-variant1

#15 – CAPTAIN MARVEL #14 AMANDA CONNER 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL 2013)

eBay NM Avg raw: $700

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $1,600

There’s always been plenty of debate over the first appearance of Kamala. There’s a character that kind of (not really) looks like her in this book that’s running away from a brawl. Somewhere, the writer confirmed that it was indeed Kamala. Hence, the market has chosen this as the go-to 1st Ms. Marvel. And the debate shall continue…….

Uncanny_X-Force_Vol_1_20_Venom_Variant

#16 – UNCANNY X-FORCE #20 PSYLOCKE RENAUD 1:50 “VENOM” COVER (MARVEL 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $700

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $1,275

Yep, Venom Variant month book again AND it has both Venom Deadpool and Venom Psylocke. This is pretty much a no brainer and doesn’t need more explanation. It was recently dubbed as the 2nd most valuable Venom month Variant, but…it has some company with several friends close behind.

Superman / Batman #4 German Edition

#17 – BATMAN/SUPERMAN #4 MICHAEL TURNER GERMAN VARIANT (DC 2004)

eBay NM Avg raw: $700

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

This is easily one of the very few foreign variants that is worth such a large sum of money. Prices tend to vary as copies disappear for long periods of time while demand slowly builds. Recently a VF copy sold for $590 and a CGC 9.4 SS copy sold for $1,700.

Iron Man #512

#18 – IRON MAN #512 STROMAN 1:50 VENOM VARIANT (MARVEL 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $643

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Yep. Venom Variant. All chromey. Like others, when I started this list this book was at $310. A recent sale of $643 skyrocketed this book’s value. 9.8’s are currently listed for $1,800. Buy any Venom variant in the rest of the set that’s under $250. They have become some of the best investment variants ever. If you have a full set then you did very, very well.

WeCanNeverGoHome1SDCC50

#19 – WE CAN NEVER GO HOME #1 2015 SDCC VARIANT (BLACK MASK 2015)

eBay NM Avg raw: $600

eBay Graded Sale: $945

I was surprised to see this 2015 Black Mask SDCC exclusive on this list. It was limited to 50 copies and was easily selling for around $700 last summer. It dropped a bit a few months later. However, a raw copy on 4/20 sold for $1K but has since dropped as a copy sits on eBay at $700 with no bids. A CGC 9.8 SS sold for $945, but was then relisted a few days later and then removed. It appears that this price is dropping.

Walking Dead #100 Lucille Retailer Incentive

#20 – WALKING DEAD #100 LUCILLE, NON RUBY VARIANT (IMAGE 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $600

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $768

Kirkman signed and sent these to Retailers as a thank you for supporting 100 issues of Walking Dead (and making him VERY rich). What’s even harder to find is the unsigned variant. Prices on both of these are very close. When Negan returns and gains more traction on the show, this will start climbing this list.

Superman & Batman #7 (French Limited Edition)

#21 – SUPERMAN BATMAN #7 DELL’OTTO VIRGIN FRENCH PANINI EURO VARIANT (DC 2006)

eBay NM Avg raw: $500

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Holy smokes Batman! Man, this book made several huge jumps up in value recently. There were two big sales recently, one on 8/20 @ $500 and another on 8/19 @ $455. It was really just a matter of time. This cover is amazing. The kicker is that these were cheap for a while. Not anymore. When purchasing, be careful of the German variant. It shares this cover but instead of being virgin, it has the BATMAN logo at the top.

HellboyTheFury3Variant

#22 – HELLBOY: THE FURY #3 VIRGIN VARIANT (DARK HORSE 2011)

eBay NM Avg raw: $500

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $810

This Virgin variant is incredibly hard to find. Being a non-big two book, $500 is a really strong commanding price. It dwarfs Hellboy’s first and early appearances and takes first place as the most valuable Hellboy book. Heck, most valuable Dark Horse book!

DuckTales1SDCC2011

#23 – DUCK TALES #1 2011 SDCC VARIANT (KABOOM 2011)

eBay NM Avg raw: $500

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Two major forces ruled my childhood: Nintendo & Duck Tales. This variant is extremely high on my most desired variants. However, it’s officially WAY out of my price range as the former lone copy on eBay sold for $500. There are 3 listed currently, an undetermined condition raw @ $500, a CGC 9.6 SS @ $1,500 and a signed raw at $700.

DangerGirl2RubyRed

#24 – DANGER GIRL #2 “SMOKING GUN” RUBY RED VARIANT (IMAGE 1998)

eBay NM Avg raw: $500

eBay Graded Sale: $1,200

This book hasn’t seen a sale in a really long time. However, that’s only because it’s never listed. Most copies that I’ve seen have been sold through places like the CGC forums. Even then, it’s super rare. I debated putting this book on here because of the lack of sales. However, it’s SO in demand, and it sits on other sites’ “top most valuable variants”, that I had to. I think $500 is a really low estimate, but sales over the past couple years have danced around that. Some higher and some lower, without knowing condition. The standard variant was limited to 4,000 copies, the Platinum at 1,000 and it’s unknown what it is for this. 500 is a safe estimate, but seeing how seldom it shows up, it could even be 100.

Deadpool v3 #45 Variant

#25 – DEADPOOL #45 “ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN HOMAGE” HORN 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL 2010)

eBay NM Avg raw: $500

eBay Graded Sale: $720

Okay, when I started this list this was JUST about to fall off at #100. But that was in June/July when copies were selling for $180. A copy sold at the beginning of August for $500, therefore skyrocketing this book’s value. Deadpool variants sell really, really, really well. They don’t just retain value, they slowly (and often quickly) keep increasing. It’s honestly my favorite Deadpool variant, so I’m really glad it made this list.

s-l1600 (5)

#26 – SPIDER-MAN #1 MARVEL COLLECTIBLE CLASSICS CHROMIUM VARIANT (MARVEL 1998)

eBay NM Avg raw: $485

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $725

Marvel did several of these Marvel Collectible Classic Chromium covers. While they all tend to vary in price under $50, Spider-Man #1 and Amazing Spider-Man #300 are leaps and bounds far more expensive then their Classic Chromium brothers. These are excellent investments as they will always be in demand and rarely come up for sale. There’s a CGC 9.9 up for sale at $1,650 if you’re feeling like spending some cash.

Amazing Spider-Man #688 Variant

#27 – AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #688 CAMPBELL 1:50 “LIZARD” VARIANT (MARVEL 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $470

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $1,000

I think my CGC 9.8 copy was the last graded sold listing before this PGX copy did. I sold mine in December 2014 for $275. Ouch. And the kicker is it just SAT there for months at that price with barely a nibble. Regardless, this is Campbell’s best non-lady variant. It’s impossible to find and awesome.

 Journey_Into_Mystery_Vol_1_633_Venom_Variant

#28 – JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #633 HANS 1:50 VENOM VARIANT (MARVEL 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $470

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Seriously, hold on to these Venom Variants. This is another one that had a sizeable jump in price. They just simply dominate this list. I don’t know of any other theme variant month that has such demand.

spider_man_octopus

#29 – AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700 DITKO 1:200 VARIANT (MARVEL 2013)

eBay NM Avg raw: $450

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $880

Ditko is a legend and a Spidey one especially. This variant just gets harder and harder to find. Legend + anniversary issue +1:200 = awesome. I think $450 is a decent price as this book has tremendous long term potential.

 Ms Marvel #2 Molina Variant

#30 – MS. MARVEL #2 MOLINA 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL 2014)

eBay NM Avg raw: $450

eBay Graded Sale: 9.6: $598

$450 seems like an entry price to this variant. I don’t spend money on books, but I’m super tempted for this book. I can absolutely see this becoming the most valuable Kamala Khan variant. Heck, I can see this becoming a top 10 variant.

1149fb6fe8626e0b5ddb6e9f7cfab445_xl__72136.1454610789.1280.1280

#31 – SPAWN # 222 KUDRANSKI VARIANT (IMAGE 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $450

eBay Graded Sale: 9.4: $330

This is one of those Spawn variants that only a true Spawn collector would recognize as a incredibly rare variant. Spawn books don’t say “variant” anywhere on the cover. And this variant’s art blends in perfectly with all surrounding issues. In 2012, this Spawn issue had a print run of 18.3K. That’s a far cry from the 1M print run of issue #1. The rumored print run for these is about 400 copies. When digging through $1 and back issues, always look for this issue. I’m positive that most stores wouldn’t look twice at this.

s-l1000

#32 – SPAWN 220 MCFARLANE 1 IN 75 SKETCH VARIANT (IMAGE 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $449

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

We’ve mentioned these a lot lately. Spawn has a huge fan base that gladly pays large amounts for incredibly hard to find variants like these sketch homage variants. Spawn collectors have been wanting them for a while now. However, since they’re fantastic cover swipes of popular characters/covers, even the casual Spawn fan wants them now too. This Hulk homage is currently the king of them. I see this set going the way of the Venom Variants and will start dragging the rest of the set up with it. When shopping for this, keep in mind that the issue #200 sketch variant looks VERY similar to this.

Red Hood: The Lost Days #1 1:25 Variant

#33 – RED HOOD: THE LOST DAYS #1 MATTINA 1:25 VARIANT (DC 2010)

eBay NM Avg raw: $430

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

There have been 3 recent sales: $400 on 8/16, $465 on 7/31 and $480 on 7/15, all NM. More and more folks are noticing this rare variant and are making it into a highly desired variant. Red Hood, theatrically, is a little in limbo right now. But that hasn’t seemed to stop this. Mattina is also getting a lot of attention lately, which definitely helps this book.

3-27-2015-2

#34 – GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #4 CAMPBELL “GAMORA” 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL 2013)

eBay NM Avg raw: $425

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $450

The 9.8 sale was on 5/21. The raw sale was on 6/21. This variant had a big jump recently. Campbell is another common theme on this list. He dominates the variant market and has a tremendous fan base. As time passes, these hard to find variants DON’T get easier to find. Therefore, they will not be getting any cheaper either.

s-l1600

#35 – GRIMM FAIRY TALES SDCC EBAS STAR WARS “NAUGHTY/RISQUÉ” SLAVE LEIA VARIANT/ ALL NAUGHTY VARIANTS (ZENESCOPE 2015)

eBay NM Avg raw: $425

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Zenescope variants have their fans.  And this is the variant that just does it for them the most (Note: pictured is the more common non-risqué cover. We’ll let you fill your own browser search history for “naughty Leia”).  Like this variant, most naughty variants command a pretty penny. I’m refraining from adding more on this list as 1: they would dominate it (I count at least 30 that would be on here) & 2: this is a general audience site and most of these are pretty risqué.  Regardless, this spot is reserved for Zenescope and their very successful back issue market variants.

Batman 1 1-200 Sketch Variant

#36 – BATMAN #1 NEW 52 CAPULLO 1:200 VARIANT (DC 2011)

eBay NM Avg raw: $410

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $925

One of the big questions with Rebirth was “how would it affect New 52 values?”  This is hands down one of the most expensive New 52 books, and it has provided an answer: it hurt a little.  It’s down from its pre-Rebirth market value of $600.  With fans itching for a return of the Snyder-Capullo run, this book should do fine long term.

ASM648_variant1

#37 – AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #648 CAMPBELL 1:50 COLOR VARIANT (2011 MARVEL)

eBay NM Avg raw: $403

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Yep, another Campbell variant shows up again on the list.  Anti-fans complain that all his women look the same.  Seeing his dominance and the success of his variants on this list, it obviously works really, really well for him (and collectors).

Wolverine and the X-men #4 Venom Variant

#38 – WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #4 BROOKS 1:50 “VENOM” VARIANT (MARVEL 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $400

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

This variant saw a big jump to $521 on 5/20/16. Since then, copies have danced around $220. An auction listing is currently at $350. My guess is that it’ll end in the $400 range.

AmazingSpider-Man300ChromiumVariant

#39 – AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #300 MARVEL COLLECTIBLE CLASSICS CHROMIUM VARIANT (MARVEL 1998)

eBay NM Avg raw: $400

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $887

See Amazing Spider-Man #1 Chromium. It greatly helps that this is the rarest variant that contains the first full appearance of Venom.

421925-Wolverine66d

#40 – WOLVERINE #66 (OLD MAN LOGAN) TURNER SKETCH VARIANT (MARVEL 2008)

eBay NM Avg raw: $400

eBay Graded Sale: $725

Once it was confirmed that the next Wolverine movie would NOT focus on the Old Man Logan storyline, I thought this variant was dead.  But then the Aspen Turner Batman variant stirred things up a bit and finally gave Mr. Turner his overdue after market love.  While this will never be under $100, I don’t expect this price to hold.

Adventure Comics #12 / 515 Lee Bermejo DC 75th Anniversary Variant

#41 – ADVENTURE COMICS #515 DARKSEID 1:25 75TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT (DC 2010)

eBay NM Avg raw: $400

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

I don’t know if people don’t know about this variant or if it’s just exceptionally rare.  The CGC census shows 6 TOTAL graded copies.  This book has sold for $150 for low grade copies to $400 for high grade.  All recent sales have been VF/damaged copies for around $150 to $200.  Expensive variants like this just don’t fly under the radar.  6 graded copies tells me that this is truly one difficult book to find.

3211755-19-ri

#42 – TRANSFORMERS MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE #19 1:25 RI VARIANT (IDW 2013)

eBay NM Avg raw: $400

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Who knew, right?  This variant is so highly sought after.  And copies just do not come up for it.  I actually think this current ranking for this 1:25 variant is WAY low.  Does your store order 25 copies of each Transformers issue?  Probably not.  There’s plenty more room to grow on this.  There’s currently one copy for sale, it’s a CGC 9.0 at $600 and looks pressable.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #1 Wilkins

#43 – MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE #1 WILKINS “SKELETOR” 1:25 VARIANT (DC 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $400

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

It drives me crazy that I can’t find this variant.  It was fairly available under $100 about a year ago, and I was determined to find it cheaper.  That plan failed.  This 1:25 (I always thought it was 1:50) is quickly becoming the crown jewel of MOTU comics.  It’s terribly hard to find and keeps increasing every time it’s listed.  Don’t sell this either, if a MOTU movie ever gets made….. man, watch out.  Graded copies?  Good luck finding one.

Captain America #7 Venom Variant

#44 – CAPTAIN AMERICA # 7 PERKINS 1:50 “VENOM” COVER (MARVEL 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $362

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

I’m running out of things to say for these Venom Variants.  Find them cheap if possible and wait.  They’re not going away.  This book has disappeared from eBay.  I expect to see a big jump when it shows up again.

Walking Dead #100 Comixology Variant

#45 – WALKING DEAD #100 OTTLEY COMIXOLOGY SKETCH VARIANT (IMAGE 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $355

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $625

The last raw copy sold on 8/16/16 in NM for $355.  This is a sharp drop during a high sale of $1,000 in 4/16.  Why the sudden drop?  It’s hard to say.  But it does go to show you that not every high priced variant keeps going up.  Limited to only 500 copies, it should do fine long term.

Moon Knight Vol 7 #1 (Bill Sienkiewicz Variant)

#46 – MOON KNIGHT #1 SIENKIEWICZ 1:75 VARIANT (MARVEL 2014)

eBay NM Avg raw: $355

eBay Graded Sale: 7.5: $200

Man, people sure do love them some Moon Knight.  I’ve never taken to the character, but I get the whole “Marvel’s Batman”.  Sienkiewicz has his own huge fan base, so this makes sense that it climbs the variant market without any content announcement.

Incredible Hulk #4

#47 – INCREDIBLE HULK #4 DEL MUNDO 1:50 “VENOM” VARIANT (MARVEL 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $355

eBay Graded Sale: CBCS 9.8: $475

On 5/20 this hit a high of $342.  It recently dropped to $192 on 6/12.  Thanks to several recent sales, including a new height of $355, it’s back on the move.   It’s a Venom Variant Month book, of course it’s moving up in price. A recent sale on 8/22 for a CBCS 9.8 seems like a steal at $475.

RickAndMorty1-1in50

#48 – RICK AND MORTY #1 ROILAND 1:50 VARIANT (ONI 2015)

eBay NM Avg raw: $350

eBay Graded Sale: CGC 9.4: $500

People love this show.  The episodes that I’ve seen are definitely funny.  I see the appeal.  With that said, I don’t hear about the show as much as I used to.  However, that hasn’t affected this book’s value.  It’s still bringing in large amounts.  It has recently disappeared from EBay.  No listings to be seen.

Supergirl & The Legion of Super-Heroes #23

#49 – SUPERGIRL AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #23 HUGHES 1:10 VARIANT (DC 2006)

eBay NM Avg raw: $338

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $717

I totally thought this variant would easily top the list.  But, it’s right in the middle.  When you attempt to rattle off the most valuable variants, this is one of the first 5 that you think of.  It’s a perfect cover in every way.  Arguably, it may be the best modern variant.  Why isn’t it a $1K book?  Well, a 41.5K print run was a decent number for Supergirl.  This variant, being a 1:10 variant, was pretty accessible upon release.  Regardless, copies are drying up into collections.  It’s a really tough book to let go.  It’s a great investment book.

HARLEY-QUINN-1-Variant

#50 – HARLEY QUINN #1 HUGHES 1:25 VARIANT (DC 2013)

eBay NM Avg raw: $301

eBay Graded Sale: $700

What else is there to say about this.  It’s Harley & Hughes.  He nailed this cover.  Being a 1:25 incentive for an issue that sold 92K copies isn’t exceptionally rare.  However, mix in the two fan bases that this variant pulls in and BAM…. Demand=$.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 2nd Printing

#51 – TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1 2ND PRINTING (MIRAGE 1984)

eBay NM Avg raw: $300

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $1,050

Officially the oldest variant on the list.  Can’t afford TMNT #1 1st print? 2nd print is a no brainer.  The first print was limited to a very low 3,000 copies.  This 2nd print jumped up to a still difficult print run of 6,000 copies.  The 3rd print got smart and finally jumped to 35,000.  This is a really smart investment book.

Justice League of America #50 Jim Lee DC 75th Anniversary Variant

#52 – JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #50 LEE 1:75 75TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT (DC 2010)

eBay NM Avg raw: $300

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

On 8/15/16, this incredibly hard to find variant finally saw one copy sell for $200.  And it was a VF copy. $300 is an estimate, and I feel that it’s low.  It is easily the best homage cover out of the 75th Anniversary Variant set and it’s fricking Jim Lee….. AND a high 1:75 ratio.  There’s a CGC 9.8 copy for sale at $400.  That seems like an excellent price.

Captain Marvel #17 2nd Print

#53 – CAPTAIN MARVEL #17 2ND PRINT (MARVEL 2014)

eBay NM Avg raw: $300

eBay Graded Sale: $645

This heavily argued 1st Kamala Khan has seen some dips in value while the #14 variant has been rapidly escalating in value.  However, this doesn’t mean that there’s no long term potential.  It probably has some of the best potential out of every book on here.  It’s just seeing a lull, which is the perfect time to buy.  The market could always correct itself.

brimpception

#54 – SEX CRIMINALS #6 BRIMPCEPTION VARIANT (IMAGE 2014)

eBay NM Avg raw: $293

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $2,249.99

Brimpception!!  Love it or hate it, this limited to 100 copies book is incredibly hard to find.  It’s like printing money if you have one that’s high grade.

#55 – SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #20 CAMPBELL 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $290

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $400

I know many point to Spider-Man Presents Black Cat #1 as their favorite Campbell cover, but this is easily mine.  Yeah, sure, boobs are front and center…but, this cover is fun in its playfulness…okay fine, it’s the boobs and the whole sexy cat thing.

665944_edge-of-spider-verse-2-land-var

#56 – EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #2 LAND 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL 2014)

eBay NM Avg raw: $280

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $500

Was this book hot in 2014 or what?  It quickly hit $50 within a week.  When folks caught wind of the Spider-Gwen fever it shot up to crazy amounts.  I think it had reached something like $700 raw at one point…which is just nuts.  But still, people LOVED Spider-Gwen.  It’s stabilized to $280, which is still really good for a 1:25 variant for what was supposed to be a one time throwaway character.

55738_20060803000529_large

#57 – WOLVERINE #145 NABISCO VARIANT (MARVEL 1999)

eBay NM Avg raw: $280

eBay Graded Sale: 9.4: $300

This issue marked the return of Wolverine’s Adamantium after getting pulled out of his pores by Magneto in X-Men #25.  Wolverine was without Adamantium for 6 years, which is really a long time in the world of comics.  That timespan, including this issue, had some of the best X-Men stories ever.  Almost all the variants for Wolverine #145 sell for decent money.  This Nabisco mail away is hands down the hardest to find, especially in NM condition.  Do you think a food company knew how to mail a comic book in 1999?  Nope.

Wonder Woman #38 Variant

#58 – WONDER WOMAN #38 FINCH 1:100 VARIANT (DC 2015)

eBay NM Avg raw: $275

eBay Graded Sale: $700

I can’t tell you how often I hear or see people asking for this variant.  It was hot right out of the gate and rose to $150 its first weekend.  It reached a height of $250 and then demand dipped.  For a few months, this could be bought for $100.  I think this was due to multiple listings with sellers trying to chase that $250 and were undercutting to get something out it.  Man, that was a mistake.  Those that bought it cheaply or held on to these are riding a demand wave that will last a long time.

NewMutants1Philly2009

#59 – NEW MUTANTS #1 SDCC PARTIAL SKETCH VARIANT (MARVEL 2009)

eBay NM Avg raw: $275

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

For years and years, it was always X-Men #510 that people paid attention to.  Black Panther and New Mutants were super cheap books that were pretty easy to find.  Now, these are just becoming variant juggernauts.  Can this ever break the $1K mark like its sisters?  Probably not.  Still, it’s a high value variant that will see slow gains.

incredible-hulk-100-michael-turner-gray-grey-retail-variant-1-50-marvel-comic-book-2080-p

#60 – INCREDIBLE HULK #100 TURNER 1:50 “GRAY HULK” VARIANT (MARVEL 2007)

eBay NM Avg raw: $275

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $150

Two things helped skyrocket this variant to its recent market value: 1: Planet Hulk announced as the main film storyline & 2: Michael Turner resurgence.  Days after several high sales, someone listed a 9.8 for $175 obo.  Of course, someone offered $150 right away and got it.  This is why it’s incredibly important to research your books before listing.  That was an excellent purchase.

#61 – BLACK WIDOW #6 CAMPBELL “KISS OR KILL” 1:15 VARIANT (MARVEL 2010)

eBay NM Avg raw: $272

eBay Graded Sale: 9.6: $300

Campbell covers are highly collected among fans.  This variant is one of the hardest to find, let alone in high grades.  The stark white cover is unforgiving to spine creases, indents and marks.  Man, I love this variant.

#62 – SPAWN #227 SKETCH VARIANT MCFARLANE “AMAZING SPIDERMAN #300 HOMAGE” (IMAGE 2013)

eBay NM Avg raw: $270

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Spidey #300 is a heavily overused cover swipe, but Spawn did it perfectly.  It helps that it’s drawn by McFarlane who created this original iconic cover and, IMO as I am a teen of the 90’s, easily one of the best Spidey artists ever.

#63 – AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #648 CAMPBELL 1:100 SKETCH VARIANT (MARVEL 2011)

eBay NM Avg raw: $270

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

So, here’s an interesting trend with Campbell covers, less rare color versions of his variants are selling for way more then the higher ratio sketch variants.  As someone who’s not the biggest fan of sketch covers, I appreciate and like this trend.  Still, this would be accepted with open arms into my collection.

Avengers #21 Venom Variant

#64 – AVENGERS #21 BARBERI 1:50 VENOM VARIANT (MARVEL 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $267

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Cap sure made it on a lot of these Venom covers.  Iron Man makes his 2nd Venom cover appearance and is joined by a venomized Spider-Woman.  I’ll admit, these are pretty cool.  I wish I didn’t snub my nose at “another theme variant month” back in 2012, the most magical variant year ever.

Divinity #1 Larosa Variant

#65 – DIVINITY #1 LAROSA 1:40 VARIANT (VALIANT 2015)

eBay NM Avg raw: $260

eBay Graded Sale: $522

Okay, full disclosure…. I’m not the biggest Valiant fan.  However, I recognize how hard this book is to find.  It’s dipped a lot, but Valiant fans are fiercely loyal and will always spend money on their hard to find books.  This variant is exceptionally rare, so this will have no trouble retaining value.

Spider-Man1GoldUPC

#66 – SPIDER-MAN #1 GOLD UPC 2ND PRINT (MARVEL 1990)

eBay NM Avg raw: $260

eBay Graded Sale: $560

I was surprised to see this so low on the list.  In my mind, this was one of the hardest and rarest Spidey books to find.  I guess it still is, but not in the same way it was 10 years ago.  It seems pretty stable at this price right now.

Spawn-231-McFarlene-Spider-man-Black-and-White-Sketch-Variant-310870604550

#67 – SPAWN #231 MCFARLANE SPIDERMAN #1 HOMAGE SKETCH VARIANT  (IMAGE 2013)

eBay NM Avg raw: $256

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Hey, it’s one of those Spawn sketch covers again!  Yep, it’s a Spider-Man homage done by the same artist that made the Spidey pose famous AND brought this Spawn guy to us.  Easy.  Makes sense.  A signature series for this is just obvious.  Someone will get Stan Lee to sign one though…. *sigh*

EastOfWest1Diamond

#68 – EAST OF WEST #1 RRP DIAMOND RETAILER DRAGOTTA VARIANT (IMAGE 2013)

eBay NM Avg raw: $250

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $400

Limited to 300 copies, this RRP variant has been climbing in price very steadily.  This $250 estimate is low, as the most recent copy sold was a VF grade for $185.  EAST OF WEST has a strong fan base that’s well deserved.  Imagine if the standard issues skyrocket in price….. This is a solid investment book right now.

Teen Titans #75

#69 – TEEN TITANS #75 HUGHES 1:25 VARIANT (DC 2009)

eBay NM Avg raw: $250

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Hey kids!  A Hughes cover!  And a Hughes drawn Starfire to boot.  This 1:25 variant has been slowly, but very steadily, increasing in value.  9.8’s are incredibly hard to come by.  The CGC census show only 10 copies graded and a mere 4 copies in a 9.8.  This is one of Hughes’ most popular variants.  This lack of gradings gives a hint to its rarity.

#70 – DEADPOOL MERC WITH A MOUTH #1 MCGUINNESS 2009 SDCC SKETCH VARIANT (MARVEL 2009)

eBay NM Avg raw: $250

eBay Graded Sale: $500

This is another Deadpool variant that rarely comes up for sale.  Currently, there is one listed at $350 with 13 watchers.  It will sell and then, like most hard to find Deadpool variants, it will go up.

Hulk #16 Ed McGuinness Variant

#71 – HULK #16 MCGUINNESS “DEADPOOL” 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL 2009)

eBay NM Avg raw: $250

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

The most recent sale of $217 on 8/3/16 was for a VF/NM copy. A NM copy sold a month before that at $200.  So, $250 is a rough estimate.

Ultimate_Comics_Fallout_Vol_1_4_Djurdjevic_Variant

#72 – ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4 DJURDJEVIC 1:25 VARIANT

eBay NM Avg raw: $240

eBay Graded Sale: $840

The first appearance of Mile Morales is still bringing in decent $, despite taking a tumble in value after copies have been consistently found in abundance at Five Below discount stores.  This variant actually spurred a rich debate on the validity of variant “rareness”.   How do copies suddenly appear years after release…and at severely discounted prices.  Still, it didn’t end up mattering.  If demand is there, so will the $.  Luckily, most of those Five Below copies that are selling for $100 or less are VF/NM at best, but NM prices are holding very well.

#73 – MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #0 RED COMICSPRO VARIANT (BOOM 2016)

eBay NM Avg raw: $240

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

This Power Rangers Comicspro variant has seen decreasing sales lately.  However, $240 is still strong for this.

#74 –  TRANSFORMERS MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE #43 TEXAS COMIC CON VARIANT (IDW 2015)

eBay NM Avg raw: $240

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

I’m actually pretty surprised at how many Transformers issues appear on the list.  There has only been one listed/sold.  And this is it.  Fluke?  Maybe.  But for now, if you have one, the money is out there.  *UPDATE* Per Studley_Dudley on the CBCS forum, this variant was supposed to be distributed during the 2015 Texas Comic Con, but wasn’t.  This lead to a backlash of upset Transformers fans on the convention’s Facebook feed.  That would explain the high price for this variant.  The question is, where did these go?  Some obviously made their way out of IDW.

Wonder Woman #600 Adam Hughes 75th Anniversary Variant

#75 – WONDER WOMAN #600 HUGHES 1:75 75TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT (DC 2006)

eBay NM Avg raw: $232

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

This gorgeous 75th Anniversary Variant is one of Adam Hughes’ best.  The sketch sells for a premium in high grade.  The color isn’t that far behind.

Uncanny X-Force vol.2 #5

#76 – UNCANNY X-FORCE # 5 MANARA “PSYLOCKE” 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL 2013)

eBay NM Avg raw: $227

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $650

Manara is another love him or hate him artist.  While some of his artwork is overtly sexual, this variant is just gorgeous and represents how good Manara is.

Punisher #2 Jerome Opena Variant

#77 – PUNISHER #2 OPENA 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL 2014)

eBay NM Avg raw: $225

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

There haven’t been many sales or listed copies lately.  However, the copies that have shown up have sold for $200 quickly.  #2 issues always have big drops and stores weren’t ordering 50 copies of the Punisher.  Good luck finding this.

Gotham City Sirens #1 J.G. Jones 1:25 Variant

#78 – GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #1 JONES 1:25 VARIANT (DC 2009)

eBay NM Avg raw: $220

eBay Graded Sale: $500

Gotham City Sirens was recently climbing the variant charts.  Lately, it’s been settling to around $220.  There are rumors of a DC all female film, with this title getting thrown into the mix.  The title “Gotham City” seems too limiting and exclusive for a DC Universe that has been showing other female characters.  BUT, if there are any ties for the film to this book, then just watch this go nuts.

137442_20080723215720_large

#79 – UNCANNY X-MEN #500 TURNER 1:200 SKETCH VARIANT (MARVEL 2008)

eBay NM Avg raw: $210

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $800

Not only is this arguably one of the best X-Men covers ever, this issue was very special as it was the last completed cover done by the late Michael Turner.  The estimated print run for these are around 400 copies.  How this isn’t one the most expensive variants baffles me.

Ghost Rider (Vol. 6) #1 Neal Adams 1:50 Variant

#80 – GHOST RIDER #1 VARIANT 1:75 NEAL ADAMS (MARVEL 2011)

eBay NM Avg raw: $210

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

The recent S.H.I.E.L.D. news of Ghost Rider’s appearance not only shot up values for the new more recent Ghost Rider Robbie Reyes, but it dragged this “ghost” of a variant to $200+.  Will it stay?  Hard to tell, but Adams has a huge following.  If Ghost Rider does well, then this book will continue to climb.

Secret Avengers #21 Venom Variant

#81 – SECRET AVENGERS #21 PHAM 1:50 VENOM VARIANT (MARVEL 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $206

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Venomized Captain America, Black Widow and Moon Knight.  I’m surprised this isn’t going for more then it is.  Wait, what am I saying.  Of course it’s going to go up.

#82 – SPIDER-MAN #1 MCFARLANE PLATINUM VARIANT (MARVEL 1990)

eBay NM Avg raw: $205

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $838

Easily one of my most coveted books.  This was a thank you book sent to retailers after the huge sales success for Spider-Man #1. The rumored print run for this is around 10,000 copies.  However, compare that to the 2 million copies sold for the 1st print.  That’s super tiny.  High grade copies are incredibly hard to find and sell for a hyper premium.  A recent CGC 9.8 sold for $838, 4x the market rate.

Howard the Duck #1 Gwenpool Variant

#83 – HOWARD THE DUCK #1 LIM 1:25 “GWENPOOL” VARIANT (MARVEL 2015)

eBay NM Avg raw: $200

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $355

Here’s a variant that was selling for $75 before it even released.  It rose to $110 and then dropped to $70 after some market flooding.  Since copies have started drying up, this has been steadily increasing.

1185151_ful

#84 – WINTER SOLDIER #1 DELL’OTTO 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL 2013)

eBay NM Avg raw: $200

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

This variant shot out of obscurity to a $700 book overnight.  Once folks found copies and listed them, the rareness of it went with it.  It’s still super rare, but the market became less interested in it and settled it down to $200.  Keep in mind that $200 for a 1:50 is amazing.  Watch it rise again as copies disappear.

#85 – X-23 #1 DJURDJEVIC 1:75 VARIANT (MARVEL 2010)

eBay NM Avg raw: $200

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $450

Regardless of whether X-23 shows up in the next Wolverine movie, fans LOVE them some X-23.  This 1:75 took a back seat to Dell’Otto’s 1:50 for a while.  As that book has become WAY out of reach, folks have been turning back to this variant.  And it’s rarer to boot!  However, that Dell’Otto is just perfect.

WolverineOrigins10thirdclaw

#86 – WOLVERINE ORIGINS #10 QUESADA “3RD CLAW” 1:100 VARIANT (MARVEL 2007)

eBay NM Avg raw: $200

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Sure, you hate Daken.  And I understand why.  Forced copy of Marvel’s most successful mutant with ambiguous sexuality and weird pheromone powers.  I counter argue: I think he’s one of the most original and interesting characters Marvel has created in the past 15 years.  I love his origin, daddy issues and powers.  He’s an extremely difficult character to write.  Dark Wolverine was awesome.  Everything after was terrible.  There’s so much potential in this character.  Copies in high grade slabs sell for a premium; however, the highest grade sold lately was a CGC 8.5 @$225.

#87 – CAPTAIN MARVEL #13 CONNER 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL 2013)

eBay NM Avg raw: $200

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

I don’t think this issue even has anything to do with the new Ms. Marvel.  However, spillover from issue #14 & #17 helped raise this variant out of obscurity and onto this list.

Mighty Thor #10 Venom Variant

#88 – MIGHTY THOR #10 PAREL 1:50 “VENOM” VARIANT (MARVEL 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $200

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Oh, what’s that?  You need more Venom Variants.  *Poof* there you go.  One more on the top 100.

Venom #12 Mike Del Mundo Venom Variant

#89 – VENOM #12 DEL MUNDO 1:50 “VENOM” VARIANT (MARVEL 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $200

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Soooooo, the actual Venom titled book is one of the least valuable variants of the Venom variant month set?  I guess it makes sense.  What could they do, a Venomized Venom?  So, they instead venom-ized Jack O’ Lantern, which I guess isn’t as high in demand as a venom-ized Psylocke (I totally thought it was Green Goblin or Hobogoblin until I wrote this).  However, there are no copies listed.  Seeing the trend, this too will go up.

Wonder Woman #28 Steampunk Variant

#90 – WONDER WOMAN #28 NEW 52 JONES 1:25 “STEAMPUNK” VARIANT (DC 2014)

eBay NM Avg raw: $200

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

The Steampunk variant month saw some bad covers, but great ones (like this) have shot up in value.  Wonder Woman variants seem to be high in demand right now….. It’s the movie right?  Regardless, a great cover that’s hard to find.

This has stabilized at $200. With that red cover, it’ll be a hard book to find in high grades.  It should hold at this price for a while.

#92 – UNCANNY X-FORCE #1 LIEFELD 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL 2010)

eBay NM Avg raw: $200

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $290

Uncanny X-Force variants have received a lot of love.  So has Liefeld lately.  So a Liefeld cover that has Deadpool, Wolverine, Psylocke, etc. is pretty much a no brainer.

Deadpool #45

#93 – DEADPOOL #45 MOORE “DEATH OF WOLVERINE HOMAGE” 1:100 VARIANT (MARVEL 2015)

eBay NM Avg raw: $200

eBay Graded Sale: $250

Tony Moore is one of my favorite artists with using great detail and energy.  This is no different.  I don’t love the jokey covers, but I like this one a lot.  I don’t think it’ll climb too high, but $200 seems pretty steady for this “Death of Deadpool” variant.

Limited to 106 copies, this variant shot to heights of $450 when the show was announced.  I had immense faith in this property, but it’s been a while since any news has released on its progress.  I still have a copy of this, so I’m holding on to it….. for better or worse.

Another hard to find Spawn variant.  Man, people love their Spawn books.  As this list will show, his fans are incredibly hungry for these hard to find variants.  A 9.6 copy is currently listed for $400, which seems low.  A 9.8 would probably go for big money.

SHEHULK2014001-DC71-LR-be671

#96 – SHE-HULK #1 1:100 OUM VARIANT (MARVEL 2014)

eBay NM Avg raw: $200

eBay Graded Sale:9.8: $350 est

I really dislike putting this variant on this list.  If you know me, then you know that this is at the very top of my most wanted variants.  I pondered paying $75 back when it was that low, and I deeply regret it.  I’m a big She-Hulk fan as well as a Siya Oum fan, and this (to me) is the best She-Hulk variant done by one of the best artists in the industry (Savage She-Hulks #3 Campbell is a close 2nd).  Please, don’t buy these.  Just send me the links.  Seriously, I need a copy before this increases any more.

lumberjanes_001_cover_boom_exclusive_web

#97 – LUMBERJANES #1 BOOM “DESIGN” VARIANT (BOOM 2014)

eBay NM Avg raw: $200

eBay Graded Sale: N/A

Limited to 250 copies, this variant hit $100+ upon the initial option announcement.  A few months later, copies were obtainable for cheap.  During that crazy buzz, Boom kept releasing copies for days for super cheap.  People were able to snag multiple copies.  Well, thanks to option news (that actually is moving forward), a director was announced and sent this variant skyrocketing.  It pays to hold on to books sometimes.

Uncanny X-Men #510

#98 – UNCANNY X-MEN #510 PSYLOCKE CAMPBELL 1:15 VARIANT (MARVEL 2009)

eBay NM Avg raw: $195

eBay Graded Sale: $450

Before X-Men: Apocalypse was released, this variant was pricey!  It has cooled off a little since.  Doesn’t matter though, Psylocke is arguably the most desired X-female to grace our variants and this variant is fantastically beautiful.

This is another variant that dipped after seeing a height of $450.  However, it’s still selling really strong.  Even low grade copies sell for over $125.

#100 – SPAWN #1 BLACK & WHITE MCFARLANE VARIANT (IMAGE 1997)

eBay NM Avg raw: $172

eBay Graded Sale: CBCS 9.8: $650

This kicked X-MEN (2010) #23 Christopher 1:50 Venom Variant off the list by $2 and Spider-Gwen #1 Hughes by $5.  But there you go.  This black & white reprint of Spawn #1 has been a grail for most Spawn fans since 1997.  With a rough print run of 3,000 copies, just try finding a NM copy.  They are impossible to find, and when they do show up they sell for top dollar.  This is a great book to end on.  I’m surprised at how much Spawn & Venom dominate this list.  What does it tell me?  To pick up Venom and Spawn variants when I see them cheap, and then just wait 5-10 years.
