Wrapping Up Harley Quinn #1!

I think we are more or less done. The original article has been updated quite a few times so I thought I would write another one to wrap this monster up. You will find the whole list of store variants at the bottom of this article, but first, what's the total with the black and white and sketch variants, you ask? 72 covers, not including the 2 official covers DC will be putting out. 72 covers … That's a lot of store variants, right? And it does make sense for the publisher and the stores. Not so sure it does for the collector. If you plan on getting the whole set, my hat's off to your brand of OCD, but there's no point in this.

Let's take a look at the business model, though, because (as long as people out there go variant-crazy) it's here to stay …

DC offers stores a variant exclusive, so that their comics get huge print runs. As far as I understand, the store can choose among a number of already drawn covers/artists provided by the publisher or alternatively, propose their own. A store gets a minimum of 3000 at less than cover price and prices them as they see fit, being as they are the only providers of that specific cover.

Specifically, in this case, DC must be extremely happy with how it all went. Extrapolating from the public numbers of these store variants and assuming 3000 for the color and 1500 for the black and white in the rest of the cases, Harley Quinn #1 will have a minimum print run (i.e. not counting the regular and DC variant editions) of +180K, probably close to 200K. For perspective 180K would have made Harley Quinn #1 the 4th book with the highest sales in June or 2nd in April and May. And, again, that's not counting Diamond orders, which will be another 100K easily bringing the total to 300K (for comparison's sake, the June issue of Harley Quinn sold 55K)… DC happy!!!

What about retailers? There will be a bit of everything here, I guess. Some have done really well, to the point where they have brought to life another beast: the third type of variant which is limited to 1000. So at least four of these retailers (Aspen, Legacy, AOD and Bulletproof Comix) will be really happy too, they have made an investment and multiplied it by a lot in record time. Don't suffer for the rest, even if they have to end up selling them at cover price, they will be OK.

Which brings us to collectors, speculators and other wild animals … I asked around among contributors to the site and the answer was predictable but made perfect sense: “considering the amount of covers, stick to the smallest print”. So again, we are looking at those third type covers offered by a few retailers. In particular, the Turner and the Artgerm variants limited to 1000 copies seem like the best card to play. If you are a collector and have a thing for Harley Quinn, though, be careful … Make sure you're getting what you like because you like it and not the possibility of having a unique item that will always be valuable.

OK, enough of Harley (haha! Like that's going to happen anytime over the next couple of months, girl's got an Avril Lavigne feat Marilyn Manson song … yes, they're still alive), and next week we will get started with either All-Star Batman or Suicide Squad!

Fun never ends at CBSI!!!!

Not even picking up one of these, if you want to speculate, and youre on this website about price speculation and future growth, do NOT buy any of these, if there were only 2 variant covers maybe, 3 is a stretch if they have a 1:10 1:25 1:50, you obviously then go for the 1;50 , but 72 , none of these will be worth above cover price or the original sold price in 365 days. Remember spider gwen and her variant cover madness, and now people are dumping 10 of them off at a time on ebay, DCs only goal during the rebirth is to make money to appease the shareholders , never forget that, you wont make a dime if you buy any of these

If Harley #1 has a 300k print run or even higher. Then each store cover of 3000 is technically a 1:100 variant, store cover of 1500 would be 1:200 variant, and a store cover of 1000 would be a 1:300 variant. If this movie does what WB wants it to do and hit the billion mark that would mean a rough estimate 70-100 million people would have paid to see this world wide. 300k isn’t a huge print run if there is millions of potential customers looking to buy a copy of Harley #1

That’s very interesting logic… I suppose it’s possible. More likely it will be that 100K people will want the book and be stuck with 3 copies each. Trying desperately to convince people they’re worth double what they paid.

Even if there is a demand for a few of these Harley variant, most are probably going to be worth less than the original asking price. This happened with Spider-Gwen, Star Wars, Secret Wars, and DK# #1, were about to start seeing it with Batman and Justice League rebirth store exclusives and that Civil War 2 that nobody asked for… Store Exclusives that have paid out have been things like Aspen/Turner, JSC, Artgerm, Dell’Otto, Batman Adventures #12 reprint. There’s a lot of overpriced store exclusives sitting on the market collecting dust. Soon those will be discounted. Rinse and Repeat.

It will be interesting to see how all this Harley mania plays out regardless.

Worst case scenario, the Puddin pack pays for PC copies of Artgerm, Dell’Otto, and Witter, and I have a few bucks left over to buy a Butterfinger.

I’m surprised and not surprised the Artgerm line art variant has stalled out at 67 copies at Limited Edition Comix. This is the most interesting one of the bunch from a speculation perspective. On art alone, it’s a classic; for now, it’s the definitive Artgerm pinup of Harley. On the other hand, people are fatigued by the 1K print run cash grabs after they’ve paid hard earned money for color and sketch versions. At the end of the day, there are worse gambles than the line art, so I went in for a single set.

I’m very optimistic the Dell’Otto color will sell out. They sell a steady amount of copies every day. I don’t think the ceiling is high for this book, but I don’t think it’s much of a risk and you’ll likely make a few bucks if you bought in at ground floor pricing.

I love the Witter, but I suspect they will lose value quickly. It’s not really a sell out when resellers buy out 80% of your stock. Beautiful cover, but she doesn’t have the fan base of the premier artists out there.

Just my opinions. I’m wrong all the time!

Actually I can see a few of them going up in value – the Turner Hatless print, despite people’s objections on it, still has a limited run of 1000. Even the Turner Color and Sketch variants will go up as Turner is very popular – and the fact that this is the first time his Harley has been used on the cover. Stanely Lau (Artgerm) will likely increase in value as time goes on when more people begin to collect his work. I don’t think there’s enough of a difference in the Pink Cover of Dell’Otto to merit the price now, let alone down the road – even with the limited run.

The others – you’re probably right although I do like the potential that the Ebas variant may have as some collectors and fans prefer a more sexual looking Harley.

Meant to add – don’t think comparing an existing character like Harley Quinn to a new character like Spider-Gwen is a proper comparison. She’s getting a manufactured push so to speak while Harley has been popular for over 20 years now and her popularity is still rising – and we even haven’t gotten to the point yet where she gets her own stand alone movie.

“Harley has been popular for over 20 years”

Has she really been though? Harley’s first series was cancelled after 38 issues in 2004 with a print run of 14k for the last issue. Her next series is 10 years later in Jan 2014 and this is when she started selling. Spider-Gwen came out in Apr of 2015, a little over a year later.

Popular enough to turn a one time cameo of a female henchmen into a full blown stand alone comic line that has only increased in popularity as time goes on. She had her small hardcore fans with the original jester suit and that has now branched into the various incarnations – some are hits, while others aren’t. Spider-Gwen on the other hand, I see her appeal but many will say that she only exists because of HQ’s popularity – either way, comparing a new character that is trying to cash in on the original so to speak isn’t a fair comparison. It doesn’t mean, I don’t think that a lot of the variants will remain at their original value price but there are some of the variants that I expect to climb in price as time goes on. I also think that the Spider-Gwens variants have potential if she is promoted correctly – and if she somehow ends up in a movie or a stand alone film – then theyll go up in price. It really comes down to what plans they have for her, how long the character lasts, etc – right now, it’s nothing but speculation.
